Brendan Schaub believes that there won’t be another champion as dominant as Jon Jones.

This past weekend, Jiri Prochazka created history when he dethroned Glover Teixeira to become the new light heavyweight king at UFC 275. He also became the first Czech champion in the promotion and received major backing from legendary fighters such as Georges St-Pierre who tout him to have a commanding reign ahead.

Brendan Schaub doesn’t think that there will be another Jon Jones

When it comes to any champion in the UFC, and especially in the 205-lbs division, Jones is widely considered to be the gold standard for other athletes given his accomplishments. The former two-time UFC Light Heavyweight title holder successfully defended the strap 11 times and has never lost a bout where the title was on the line.

In the latest episode of the Schaub Show, Brendan Shaub shared his thoughts on why he believes the 205-lbs title will continue to change hands despite Prochazka’s abilities.

“I think [the UFC light heavyweight belt] gets circulated just non-stop,” Schaub said. “I think that thing gets passed around like a doobie at a Snoop Dogg concert; just here you go, here you go, here you go, here you go.

“I think you’re going to get multiple world champions in the next two years and when I look at the division, you know, unless there’s some freak that comes along soon that we haven’t heard of, you’re not getting another Jon Jones in this lifetime; a guy who’s just absolutely dominant.” (h/t Sportkeeda)

UFC Light Heavyweight title’s recent history

Jan Blachowicz won the vacant title after Jones’ absence against Dominick Reyes in September 2020. His only title defense came against the reigning UFC Middleweight king Israel Adesanya, who moved up a weight class to test out his chops. ‘The Legendary Polish Power’ would go on to drop the crown in his next fight to Glover Teixeira.

From Teixeira’s win over Blachowicz last October, the UFC Light Heavyweight gold has changed hands three times in just the last seven months.

It remains to be seen whether Jiri Prochazka is able to add some stability to the division and emulate a run similar to Jones’ early career. While there has not been an official announcement, he will likely face Blachowicz in his first title defense.

Meanwhile, Jones has been out of action for over two years now gearing up to make his heavyweight debut. He’s expected to face Stipe Miocic for the interim title sometime later this year.

Valentina Shevchenko

In the co-main event of UFC 275, Valentina Shevchenko will seek to defend her flyweight title for the seventh consecutive time. She takes on Brazilian contender Taila Santos, who is coming off a first-round finish over Joanna Wood.

As with the majority of her fights, Valentina Shevchenko is a heavy favorite. Let’s see if any of the LowKick MMA Staff predict a massive upset at UFC 275:

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Taila Santos

Frank Bonada

It’s been a long time since I picked against Valentina Shevchenko, and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. Taila Santos is one of the more interesting contenders to match up with the flyweight champ in recent memory, but it’s still impossible to predict the fight playing out in any other way than a Valentina Shevchenko victory.

It’s worth noting that few gave Julianna Pena a chance against Amanda Nunes, and yet she now holds the 135lb title. But there simply isn’t an aspect of this fight that you can feasibly argue Santos will come out on top in. The Brazilaianns durability may allow her to hold out to the judge’s decision, but it would be extremely impressive if she even wins a single round.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko by Dec.

Ross Markey

In seach of successive successful title defense number seven against Brazilian contender, Taila Santos, flyweight outlier, Valentina Shevchenko is the unmovable object at 125lbs. Prolonged periods of dominance within divisions in professional mixed martial arts usually have their sell-by date or, at the very least, an eventual tell that stylistically, an end of an era is close.

However, when it comes to Shevchenko – it feels like Santos, nor any other contender, currently at their level can cause the Kyrgyzstan native any real, noteworthy cause for concern. An upward move back to the bantamweight limit may be on the horizon for Shevchenko in the very near future, and beyond a return to 135lbs, I really find it difficult to picture the champion in any significant distress at flyweight. Shevchenko, And Still – within the distance seems like a safe pick – but it’s really just giving credence to her unmatched ability.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko by KO or Sub.

Makoa Goble

Valentina Shevchenko is looking to add another title defense to her impeccable career at UFC 275. Meanwhile, Taila Santos is preparing to face a legend. Not too long ago we saw one of the greatest fighters in Women’s MMA suffer a historic upset loss when Amanda Nunes was dethroned by Julianna Peña. At UFC 275, anything can happen, but don’t expect to see the same thing.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko via Third round KO/TKO

Nikhil Sharma

Valentina has been so dominant on her way to UFC 275. Her aura of near invincibility can also play against her. People seem to be counting Santos out even though she has more KO wins than Valentina. Santos has also never been finished in her career so far. I see this going the distance with Valentina coming out on top but probably not in a lopsided decision.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko by Dec.

Craig Peikos

Taila Santos’ best chance is to use her strength and grappling to work Shevchenko to the ground and keep her there. Unfortunately, I don’t see her doing that for five rounds. ‘Bullet’ gets it done with technical striking and scores a unanimous decision.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko by Dec.

Majit Suleymanov, a four-foot-tall dwarf and social media star competed in a hugely outlandish and controversial Epic Fighting Championship event earlier this month against a female pornstar, Alexandra Puskin, with the Russian promotion once more fielding another freakshow, intergender mixed martial arts fight.

Suleymanov, who was the much shorter of the two, managed to successfully takedown Puskin on cue during the opening round of their bizarre MMA matchup, establishing mount on occasion in-between scrambles, with the duo eventually trading strikes to boot.

Suleymanov was eventually confronted in the cage by another female in support of Puskin at the EFC MMA event

Continuing to find success with his wrestling in the opening stages of the second round, Suleymanov, however, the blogger and social media influencer was confronted by another female in the cage – who appeared to be in the corner of Puskin, who pulled Suleymanov from guard and lashed out at him, before the official managed to corral her. During the bout, the commentary team seated at cageside could not contain their laughter as they described the action playing out.

Over the course of the last numerous months, the promotion has received widespread criticism and notoriety for fielding intergender mixed martial arts bouts, and other freakshow fights, including multiple fights featuring two male competitors against a sole female challenger, and a notable occurrence of a grandfather fighting alongside his grandson against a sole female opponent.

Polish MMA promotion WAR also managed to get in on the recent influx of freakshow, intergender, and just plain bizarre fights – with a 5-on-5 team matchup, which included a slew of brutally late stoppages as three referees attempted to officiate the bout, with one fighter, in particular, taking significant punishment from at least two fighters on the opposite team, despite being unconscious for some time

Reactions to these types of freakshow MMA events have been totally varied, with commenters complementing the promotions for showcasing unique fights, while other critics voicing their concern for intergender fights, blatant mismatches, as well as expressing concern for potentially life-changing, late stoppages.

Muhammad Ali grandson, Biaggio Ali Walsh, loses MMA debut

Biaggio Ali made his first walk to the octagon on Fusion Fight League’s Rumble Under the Rims card this past Friday, June 3. Walsh opened up strong against fellow debutant Devin Rothwell. Biaggio managed to get up from the takedowns in the first round and was displaying strength in the clinch.

Nico Ali Walsh, brother of Biaggio, was in attendance at the event along with family friend and rapper Flavor Flav. The undefeated professional boxer with five wins under his name so far watched on as the Xtreme Couture prospect struggled with his conditioning towards the final seconds of round two.

The former model and collegiate Football star turned out to be a good draw and kept it competitive in the bout. Biaggio even dropped his opponent with a slick three-punch combination reminiscent of his grandfather’s early days before being taken down quickly.

Rothwell put on a relentless pressure on Biaggio who was unable to defend the takedown attempts. Although he was able to get up early in the fight due to his sheer strength advantage, Biaggio was quickly out of gas due to his lack of technique.

Ali Walsh looked solid with his striking abilities showing a natural penchant for the stand-up exchanges. Rothwell appeared to be more well-rounded with a clear game plan that had him try to takedown repeatedly. He found success with a sloppy takedown that was enough to put Biaggio in a dangerous spot.

From there, Rothwell quickly locked in a rear-naked choke that forced Biaggio Ali Walsh to tap out with just under a minute left in the second round. He may have lost his debut in the sport but Ali Walsh is going nowhere.

Biaggio talked about how the sport gave him a new meaning in life after his collegiate football career was over and with minimal damage in his first showing, he will likely be back soon for another go in the cage.

Bo Nickal

Last night former Penn State wrestling three-time national champion Bo Nickal made the transition to professional mixed martial arts effortless when scoring a highlight-reel knockout over John Noland.

Nickal entered the bout at Jorge Masvidal’s iKON FC 3 event with a ton of hype behind him, and he furthered his stock with his thirty-second debut victory.

From the opening bell, it looked like it was going to be Nickal’s night. The wrestler threw multiple kicks and searched for his target. Still, it was a left from Nickel that stopped Noland in his tracks. Noland, who was stunned, and returned to his feet was met with a beautifully timed uppercut followed by a straight left and a crisp right before dropping to the canvas again, which resulted at the end of the contest.

Bo Nickal made it clear in his post-fight interview that he wasn’t competing in MMA to make up numbers and had his eyes set on the best fighters and promotions in the world.

“Every single middleweight on the planet, I don’t care what organization you’re in, UFC, Bellator, PFL – doesn’t matter, I’m coming for all y’all,” Nickal said post-fight.

“I’m trying to hold it down for all my wrestlers out there,” Nickal continued. “I love y’all, and wrestling’s taking over for sure.”

Nickal, 26, has the backing of UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal, who first laid eyes on him back in 2014 and was always hopeful Nickal would make the transition from wrestling to MMA. Now it’s here, Masvidal has high expectations.

“I’m putting a lot of weight on him, but he’s kind of like the new future of MMA, in a way,” Masvidal said. “He’s got a great wrestling background, he can’t get held down by nobody, and he grew up watching MMA and wanting to do it. He’s already familiar with striking, he’s not foreign to striking like we saw in his last fight.”

What do you make of Bo Nickal’s MMA debut?

Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Biaggio Ali Walsh, is set to make his debut in mixed martial arts this weekend.

Ali Walsh will make his first walk to the octagon on Fusion Fight League’s Rumble Under the Rims card this Friday, June 3. His brother, Nico Ali Walsh is also into combat sports, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. Nico competes as a professional boxer and has gone undefeated in his first five fights as a middleweight. He is trained by Tyson Fury’s trainer, Sugarhill Steward.

Muhammad Ali grandson slated for MMA debut

Biaggio has an athletic background having competed in collegiate football before finding his calling for MMA. The 23-year-old is excited to make the switch and feels more “positive” in his new venture.

“I have been training MMA for a total of about two, two-and-a-half years now. COVID hit shortly after I began training so there was obviously a little delay but I worked out in the garage during that time.

“After college football I felt very lost and didn’t like where my life was heading. Pursuing MMA makes me feel more emotionally, spiritually, physically, and mentally positive,” Biaggio told FITE.

Being a grandson of the late, great Muhammad Ali comes with its own pressures and assumptions. Biaggio acknowledges the role of boxing in his upbringing stating that it makes him more of a stand-up striker in the cage but argues against the idea of not being well-rounded.

“I would say that growing up in the world of boxing would make me a striker but I do find myself pretty well-rounded. I began training with no specific base and started learning all the disciplines at the same time. I did no previous combat sports before MMA. I was always just a huge fan of martial arts and boxing,” Ali Walsh said.

Biaggio wants to continue tradition set by Muhammad Ali

Biaggio Ali Walsh has experience in the modeling industry in recent years. He revealed his last gig was over two years ago and while he’s open to a good opportunity if it presents itself, he will remain more focused on being a fighter.

“There is no balance between modelling and training because I am rarely ever modelling,” Biaggio said. “My last modelling job was in 2020 so those type of gigs do not happen so often. I am solely focused on finishing college and getting better in the gym. If a paid modelling job were to come up, I want to make sure it works around my school and gym schedule.”

The Chicago-native who currently trains at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas has only one ambition, to continue the tradition set by Muhammad Ali for the family.

“I want to become a champion. To be it doesn’t matter the organisation or promotion. I just want to make a name for myself and continue the tradition of fighting in my family.”
