Conor McGregor recently expressed interest in fighting UFC legend Anderson Silva. It’s time Silva reacts to that callout.

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion will face Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of this weekend’s (October 6, 2018) UFC 229 from Las Vegas. But as always, he’s continuously looking forward to the biggest and best options for his career.

Silva is apparently on his short list of prospective opponents moving forward. The longtime former middleweight champion was recently exonerated by USADA. Because his name has been cleared, he can return to action this month. Silva does not yet have a fight booked.

When he does return, however, he’s apparently onboard with a potentially massive super fight with McGregor. The all-time great just posted on his official Instagram account that it would ‘be an honor’ to face McGregor. Silva also appears to know the current climate of the fight game. He’s seen the focus on super fights.

‘The Spider’s’ Response

Check out his response to McGregor (translated from Portuguese by MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz):

“It would be an honor to test myself with Conor McGregor. He’s an unorthodox fighter and has proven he must be respected. Let’s make it happen.

“The UFC wants superfights, I’m sure fans from all over the world want to see this fight. Professionally, I believe it would be incredible to test my martial arts abilities with a fighter like Conor McGregor in a true superfight. He’s focused on fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov now, after this fight I’m ready for this challenge. When and where he wants.”

The 43-year-old Silva has been out of action since February 2017. He was set to face Kelvin Gastelum last fall but was removed due to his USADA issues. ‘The Spider’ is considered one of the greatest mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters of all-time.

He set a record for the most consecutive wins in the UFC with a 16-fight streak from 2006-2013 and will go down in history because of it. But Silva is far out of his prime. He’s also never fought at less than 185 pounds in the UFC. Silva did fight at welterweight before his UFC career.

That’s the highest division McGregor has competed at. It’s unlikely Silva would be able to cut down to 170 due to his advancing age. But stranger things have happened, and even though Silva is aging quickly, this fight would still be like printing money.

Is it one you want to see after UFC 229?

GSP Says Fighters Who Use PEDs Shouldn’t Be In GOAT Discussion

GSP continues his stance against previous PED users being in discussions as the GOAT.

The post GSP Says Fighters Who Use PEDs Shouldn’t Be In GOAT Discussion appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

GSP says fighters with a history of PED usage should not be in the talks of GOAT in mixed martial arts.

For years now before the induction of USADA, the former welterweight and middleweight champ has made his opinion strong. Thus, that was one of the reasons that he took time off before his most recent fight.

St-Pierre decided to take a break from MMA following his split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. During his MMA career, St-Pierre made nine successful title defenses and held an overall pro-MMA record of 26–2.

The former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion returned to competition in November of 2017 after four years away from the sport to win the middleweight title.

The ending of that fight went down with a submission victory in the third round over Michael Bisping at UFC 217. However, shortly after the fight, he had to vacate the title as he is dealing with colitis.

St-Pierre Disapproves

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, GSP went on record by stating that it makes a difference between those who use PEDs and those who don’t. Thus, he thinks that fighters with past PED usage should be removed from GOAT discussions.

“It makes such a difference,” St-Pierre told MMA Fighting. “People have no idea how much of a difference, and I know it because I’ve trained with people who are using peak performance-enhancing drugs. I’ve trained with a lot of them, that I know for sure.

“I’ve trained with them, and you could see a huge difference. Like, when you grapple with them, it’s not even the same guy. It’s like if you’re taking two different human beings. It’s completely insane.

Disqualified From The GOAT Discussion

St-Pierre went into detail about his view on performance-enhancing drug (PEDs). He claimed they not only affect the physical aspect of fighting, but also the athlete’s mind and the persona as a whole.

Because of that, St-Pierre believes those caught using them should be removed from the conversation for the greatest of all-time:

“Also, not only the physique, it changes the mind of the person. So with people, they think it’s only affecting strength and conditioning and stuff like that. No, it doesn’t. It’s not only recuperation — it changes the person entirely. It makes him a better athlete. And yes, I think they should be removed from the [GOAT discussion].”

He did add it’s difficult to know if longtime fighters who got caught using PEDs once or twice were lifelong users. GSP believes there’s a stark grey area as a result:

“It’s very hard to say that,” St-Pierre added, “because a lot of people, they work hard. We know if they got caught once or twice, but we don’t know if they’re all taking it for all of their life or not, so it’s a hard topic to say. It’s not black or white. It’s grey.”

Georges St-Pierre Updates Health Status, Fighting Future

The former welterweight and middleweight champ offers an update on his health status.

Georges St-Pierre is still on the mend following his UFC middleweight title win last year.

The Canadian UFC legend defeated Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 217 on pay-per-view (PPV). With the victory, “GSP” became one of few men to win a title in two different weight classes in the UFC. Following the victory, however, St-Pierre was forced to vacate his title after contracting colitis.

St-Pierre believes this occurred as a result of the weight he gained to make middleweight. He offered an update on his health status to MMA Fighting recently. St-Pierre noted almost all his symptoms are gone and he’s slowly dosing down his anti-inflammatory medication:

“Definitely the worst has passed,” St-Pierre said. “I’m dosing down the medication that I have. The medication is anti-inflammatory, so you have to dose it down. Not in one shot, you can’t stop in one shot, but I’m dosing it down every month and soon it will be past, a story of the past. As it goes right now, pretty much all of the symptoms are almost gone.”

Upcoming MMA Return?

While he’s inching closer to an Octagon return, “GSP” isn’t going to rush anything. His fight against Bisping was his first after a four-year hiatus from the sport. Now fans will likely have to wait over a year before seeing him back in the Octagon again.

St-Pierre is reluctant to sign a contract to fight anyone right now. He said once the contract is signed, the mental warfare begins. The former two-division titleholder doesn’t want to put that stress on his body while he’s not fully recovered from his illness:

“I don’t want any contract to fight somebody right now,” St-Pierre said. “Because the minute you sign a contract, the mental warfare starts, and stress is something that amplifies everything. So I want to make sure I deal with it, I take care of it, and when everything will be finished, I will be able to look forward.

“My health is the most important thing for me. [But I’m] absolutely not [closing the door on fighting again]. I’m keeping the door open. When I close it, then people will know. But right now it’s held open.”

Dana White Shoots Down GSP’s Conor/Khabib Ambitions

Dana White just shut down rumors of Georges St-Pierre fighting the winner of Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov.

St-Pierre has said on several occasions that he is considering a drop down to lightweight. The Canadian wants to become the first fighter in UFC history to win three titles in different weight classes.

With the possibility of St-Pierre contending for a lightweight title, there’s a legitimate chance he could end up fighting Conor McGregor.

McGregor is a former featherweight and lightweight champion in the UFC. He was stripped of his 155-pound title earlier this year due to inactivity.

“The Notorious One” hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since November of 2016. That was when McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title at UFC 205.

McGregor took a significant amount of time off to enjoy the birth of his first child and partake in a boxing exhibition fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. After a losing effort against “Money” inside the squared circle, the Irishman is ready to return home inside the cage.

McGregor will make his UFC return in Las Vegas on October 6th. He will cap-off a legitimate rivalry with 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Many are predicting it will be the biggest fight in the history of the UFC.

In regards to St-Pierre possibly fighting the winner, many are expecting that to be the UFC’s next move – especially if McGregor emerges victorious. That has potential to do ridiculous pay-per-view (PPV) numbers.

UFC President Dana White spoke to the media after yesterday’s (Tues. August 7, 2018) Dana White’s Contender Series taping. White seems to have a gripe with “GSP’s” history of vacating titles. He said it’s unlikely St-Pierre gets a shot at the winner of Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen,” White said. “He gave up the 170-pound belt, he gave up the 185-pound belt. I mean it’s like – no. Pick a division.”

As for when MMA fans can expect to see GSP return, White doesn’t have a clear answer yet. He admitted that a card in Toronto would be ideal:

“No, we haven’t talked, but it sounds like we will,” White said. “Toronto makes sense. Toronto wouldn’t be bad.”
