Francis Ngannou believes Herb Dean deserved a performance of the night for his stoppage of the Stipe Miocic rematch.
After knocking Miocic down in the second round, Ngannou appeared to be stunned briefly by a Miocic counter-punch. As Miocic advanced forward, he was caught by Ngannou’s own counter-punch as a left from “The Predator” put the former champion’s lights out instantly.
However, Ngannou didn’t feel like he hurt Miocic.
“I didn’t feel like I hurt him,” Ngannou said in a recent appearance on Mike Tyson’s podcast (via Middle Easy). “I was like ‘Why are you falling?’ I (threw the punch) just to counter and he went down and I’m like ‘Okay, what? I don’t know what happened but I have to follow to secure the win.’”
The rest is history as Ngannou landed a hammerfist before Dean stopped the action. Many observers notably criticized Dean for being too far away from the action — especially considering Ngannou’s power — as the veteran referee has come under fire regularly in recent months.
However, Ngannou believes Dean did a good job all things considered.
“No, honestly I watched this fight and I saw Herb Dean’s action and I think it should be the performance of the night,” Ngannou added. “Did you see how fast he ran? He was moving backwards, and then after the action you see how fast he moved in?
“The guy was on notice. He knew that if Francis touch him, don’t let (Francis) touch him again.”
Of course, Ngannou did end up touching Miocic again and Dean shouldn’t have needed to run that fast in the first place if he was closer to the action.

Dan Hardy is tired of hearing how great of a referee Herb Dean is.
The former UFC title challenger and commentator has a history with Dean going back to UFC on ESPN 14 this past July. In a fight between Jai Herbert and Francisco Trinaldo, Herbert was hurt badly and dropped by an overhand right. Despite this, Dean allowed the fight to continue and essentially forced Trinaldo to land a number of seemingly unnecessary shots. Hardy was calling the fight, and could be heard yelling at Dean to stop the fight. This led to an altercation between the two after the fight which drew the ire of UFC president Dana White.
Now, Hardy finds himself outside of the UFC while Dean continues to oversee some of the biggest fights in the organization. Hardy has said that a disagreement with a UFC employee led to his departure, but many believe the public argument between him and Dean caused an irreparable rift between him and the UFC. In an interview with Submission Radio, Hardy said he doesn’t understand why his mistake cost him his job while Dean continues to make mistakes “almost on a weekly basis” without repercussions (H/T BloodyElbow).
“So, I’m the ‘stop the fight’ guy. I don’t know if I can swear on your show, but f*ck it, I don’t care, because I’m speaking out for something that’s important,” Hardy said. “And it’s like this weird misinformation that’s happened about it, where I’m like there picking a fight for some kind of personal benefit. It’s just f*cking nonsense. Like, what a stupid thing to say.
“Like, I don’t really know Jai Herbert. I know him as well as I know Trinaldo,” Hardy said. “It doesn’t matter if the situation was reversed, it’d be the same situation. And it’s not about Herb, but like, generally we have mistakes made consistently in the sport…
“I mean, you can see now I can speak, so I can say exactly what I like, I don’t get it,” Hardy continued. “Like, he’s working the majority of the events in Las Vegas, he’s considered the gold standard of the sport, but he makes a mistake almost on a weekly basis at this point. Like, who’s gonna call him out on it? I’ll do it. I don’t care.”

Dean came under fire for failing to stop the Marina Rodriguez vs. Amanda Ribas fight on the UFC 257 main card yesterday while the former was unloading ground and pound on the latter after dropping her.
While Dean stepped in, he didn’t make contact, but it appeared he had stopped the fight as Rodriguez stepped away to celebrate. When she realized the fight was still ongoing, she returned to fight a still-dazed Ribas and ultimately finished her soon after with more strikes.
The second stoppage was certainly a good one, but all those extra strikes were unnecessary as many observers felt it should have been stopped the first time.

Former UFC welterweight contender turned fight analyst Dan Hardy has tried to clear up confusion surrounding his confrontation with Herb Dean at UFC Fight Island 3. Hardy, who was working the desk on July 25 loudly criticized Dean’s late stoppage of Francisco Trinaldo’s knockout win over Jai Herbert – something the veteran referee took issue with.
Speaking to MMA Junkie Hardy looked to end the ongoing confusion that surrounds his altercation with Dean and comments made by UFC president Dana White soon after that referred to his employees approaching fight officials.
“Yeah, but I feel like there’s a lot of confusion around this still. I kind of put it out of my mind. It became so frustratingly irritating that people didn’t have the right information.”
“(Dean) came over to me and spoke to me at the desk. (White saying), ‘You can never approach an official.’ That was not aimed at me. I’m not taking that as being aimed at me in any way. That was, to me, related to the fight the following week at UAE Warriors where one of the fighters wouldn’t let go of the choke and then pushed Marc Goddard, who was the official on that night. It was a bit of a mix of a reply from Dana at the press conference. That, to me, was what he was replying to. I didn’t approach an official.”
Hardy has since had words with the UFC brass who have told him to tone down his ringside antics when calling future fights.
“I’ve spoken to the UFC about it,” Hardy said. “They don’t want me shouting at the officials on the broadcast. That was my feedback from it. At the same time, I don’t want to be put in a position where an official isn’t doing their job. … I just want accountability. That’s all I want. We’re in a sport where people can get seriously hurt – permanently seriously hurt.”
‘The Outlaw’ has great respect for Dean who he maintains is a “good referee,” someone he is more than willing to sit down and discuss the situation with.
“Herb has refereed me a couple of times,” Hardy said. “I’ve always respected him as a highly experienced official. There’s no denying he’s a good referee. There’s also no denying that he’s human, and people do make mistakes. We don’t grow unless we take accountability for those mistakes. That’s all it was about. I have nothing against Herb. If he wants a conversation with me about it, I will have one in private or in public. He can come on the podcast, and I’ll discuss it with him on record. There are lots of things we can all learn from it.”
Hardy says he will remain an advocate for fighter safety and call out bad refereeing when he see’s it despite the UFC bosses warning against it.
“Ultimately, I’m just trying to make the sport better for everybody involved and make sure we keep in the mainstream, because we clawed and fought our way to get here,” Hardy said. “When I was fighting for a world title, it wasn’t about the fight. It was about why ‘human cockfighting’ was on TV. I got sick of having those conversations. I don’t want to go through all that ground again, because we’ve covered so much ground. But nonchalant attitudes toward refereeing is going to get us back there, and that’s what I’m trying to prevent.”
