Amidst the chaos of the circus that has ensued from Cris Cyborg’s assault of women’s strawweight fighter Angela Magana at last weekend’s UFC fighter retreat from Las Vegas, the dominant pound-for-pound great has remained relatively quiet.

That is, until now.

Cyborg was charged with misdemeanor battery by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police earlier today for the confrontation with Magana, who had repeatedly trolled Cyborg on Twitter with a seemingly never-ending series of posts that, among other things, criticized her looks and past history of steroid use.

The incident got heated in Vegas, where Cyborg had enough and punched Magana in the face (via Cagepages.com):

Cyborg will potentially face her day in Clark County court for the assault, but it’s still up to the district attorney’s office if they will actually press charges on her. For their part, LVMPD representative Larry Hadfield seemingly downplayed the arrest in a statement to MMA Junkie, saying that the call to investigate the scene was a ‘very minor call’ to them.

Regardless, Cyborg has broken her silence this evening on her official Facebook page, giving a lengthy heartfelt response explaining her situation. Check out the full statement below:

Dear Cyborg Nation,

I looked the word Culture up in the dictionary and it said “The social behavior and norms found in human societies” which made me start to think of all the different cultures I have had shape my views and how those experiences have sculpted my understanding of life and relationships, and it made me want to share my thoughts with those on Cyborg Nation.

Core Values of Culture are learned through those in leadership roles in the communities we live, work, and regularly interact with. When I first started training at Chute Boxe in Curitiba I learned the true spirit of fighting watching legends like Wanderlia Silva [sic], Shogun, and Cyborg train everyday in the gym. Everyone looked at these fighters as an example, we saw the hard work, heart, and dedication it took to become a World Champion and we learned not to expect anything less from ourselves. Training amongst these legends of the sport we learned how to win with pride, and if a loss happened to deal with it with integrity. Even though I am not training with Rudimar Fredrigo [sic] and the Chute Boxe team in Curitiba, I think I still represent the culture of the team and the values we place in honor, respect, and discipline which is why I have proudly flown the #CHUTEBOXE flag my entire career.

The way we select friends is often very different than the way companies select which ones to build long term working relationships with. The success of any company merger relies on the ability of the owners to merge core values of the two companies, giving special emphasis to the development of communication that can result in a positive conflict resolution whenever problems or misunderstandings occur.

Similar to my time in the gym with Chute Boxe I have learned that just like in fighting, culture in business is developed by those seen successful and high profile within the company. Examples of leadership are learned from the top down, and this results in what eventually becomes the culture of the company, and the identity of their relationships, and their associates.

When disparaging comments are made at the top, it sets an example that it is acceptable within the company, allowing lower ranking individuals to continuing following examples of leaders, establishing the culture and practices of the company. It is no secret I have been a victim of online bullying. At times in my career it has felt like their has been a team of writers using the internet to shape the public’s vision of my company’s brand, often attempting to make me look like the face of anabolic abuse in the sport of MMA. While it has been years since someone has said I looked like “Wanderlia [sic] Silva in a dress”, it doesn’t feel that long ago that I was listening to someone give me advice on how cutting off my dick would help me to make 135lbs easier. When people see these actions of people high profile in the company being promoted through social media without consequence or even a public apology, they see it as an acceptable behavior within the company, and often view it as an encouraged opportunity at self promotion. It should never be acceptable for a company to allow their employees to develop a culture where sexual harassment, racial prejudices, or female discrimination are acceptable in the work place.

When two companies work together, it is not only money, but the relationships within those companies, that establish the value, length, and success of the partnerships. Feeling welcomed, respected, and having trust that the two companies are mutually beneficial and seeking the same goals is essential for any success in a long term commitment. While profitability is important it can not be the only factor when determining a merger of two companies because for what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

For me it is simple to see the things I value. I am a family girl from Brazil who is not impressed by the lights of the show and the sound of the radio. While I do place some value in money I also know the joys of working for a company that values respect, loyalty, and honesty amongst its associates and discourages a workplace where sexual harassment, racial prejudices, and discrimination against females fighters is acceptable promotion.

Love,

Cris Cyborg

Cyborg has been officially charged for punching Angela Magana at last weekend’s UFC fighter retreat from Las Vegas.

According to a report from MMA Junkie’s Steven Marrocco, officer Larry Hadfield of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) revealed that Justino was cited for misdemeanor battery for the incident after receiving a call to the JW Marriott in Las Vegas at approximately 2:30 p.m. yesterday (Sun., May 21, 2017).

The LVMPD investigated the scene and then cited Justino after Magana stated she wanted to press charges. Magana reportedly transported herself to the hospital to treat minor injuries, and later denied that a TMZ Sports recounting of the scenario was true. The charges will now be reviewed by the Clark County district attorney’s office, who will decide to press official charges on Justino or not.

Officer Hadfield described the call as a ‘minor crime,’ noting that it was among the lower of those they routinely deal with:

“This is a misdemeanor crime, which is the lowest of Nevada penalties,” said Hadfield. “When they found probable cause to believe the crime had occurred, they cited that other individual. For us, it’s a very minor call, I guess you could say.”

Magana later confirmed she had not suffered the loss of a tooth as had been speculated, showing a photo of herself online. She said all the details would come out when the police report was released, and said it was the UFC rather than herself who had contacted police.

With several supposedly ‘sue-happy’ lawyers contacting her to get a suit brewing against Cyborg, Magana said she hadn’t decided to take that route yet but did press charges for the assault.

Overall, it’s the last thing Cyborg needs to deal with, as her public discontent with the UFC has recently bubbled over into a public spat, with a potential interim featherweight title fight against Megan Anderson in the works for July’s UFC 214.

It’s difficult to say if this incident will have any affect on that potential fight happening, but overall it’s safe to say that it’s simply not a good look for the woman who most consider to be the greatest pound-for-pound female fighter in UFC history – and perhaps ever.

Cyborg will now face potential charges from the Clark County DA’s office, with the maximum punishment being six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. But with Officer Hadfield downplaying the arrest as one of the lowest kinds of crimes the LVMPD usually deals with, her charges could be reduced to only community service.

Her discord with Magana surfaced after “Her Majesty,” a UFC women’s strawweight who hasn’t fought since a 2015 submission loss to Michelle Waterson, repeatedly made fun of her physical appearance and past use of steroids in numerous Twitter posts. Now, it’s up to the courts to decide if Cyborg should be dealt legal punishment for the assault, which was posted online in a video from Cagepages.com earlier today.

Does Cyborg deserve to face the music for punching Magana, or did the outspoken trash talker simply get what she deserves in your opinion?

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw was set to challenge current titleholder and bitter rival Cody Garbrandt in the main event of July 8’s UFC 213 from Las Vegas, Nevada, but a back injury to “No Love” has put the bout in jeopardy. A recent report actually indicated that Garbrandt was no longer fighting on July 8 and Dillashaw told ESPN.com that he was ’99 percent’ sure the fight was off.

If he doesn’t fight Garbrandt in July, Dillashaw has expressed interest in dropping down in weight to challenge dominant flyweight champion and pound-for-pound king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. In fact, Dillashaw, who says he’s spoken to UFC President Dana White regarding the idea, says he could meet Johnson in August:

“I was told that if Cody is out of the fight, which I am 99 percent sure he is, I will be fighting [Johnson] in August,” Dillashaw said. “I texted Dana White three days ago to ask what the deal was. He told me Cody had one more day of injections [in Germany] and then we’d find out what was going on.

“Dana was really excited about that. I don’t know if [Johnson] wants to turn down the fight or what. I don’t really know how that works. I’ve never turned down a fight from the UFC before. I don’t know if you’re really allowed to — but Dana was very excited about it.”

White has indeed expressed interest in the idea, although Johnson has remained relatively quiet regarding the potential clash. “Mighty Mouse”, who recently tied Anderson Silva’s all-time consecutive title defenses record at 10, will look to make the 11th defense of his 125-pound strap in his next bout, breaking a record in the process.

Dillashaw feels as if Johnson should attempt to break this record in a ‘big’ fight like the one he’s proposed:

“If this fight doesn’t happen, it really comes down to him not wanting to fight me,” Dillashaw said. “I’m cutting in line? Are you kidding? That was the weakest cop-out ever.

“I want to fight the best fighter in the world and I think he does nothing but tarnish his legacy if he doesn’t take it. He can’t call himself the greatest of all time if there are big fights coming to him and he’s turning them down. He wants to break a record fighting someone no one’s ever heard of? Why not make this thing epic and sell it? He’s been talking about getting paid; this is the way to do it.”

The ex-bantamweight champion has never competed at 125 pounds before and although he admits it’d be a tough weight cut, he feels as if it’d be worth it as well. Dillashaw is also working with a new nutritionist and would make the necessary changes in order to make the flyweight limit safely:

“The way I’m going to do it is switch up the way I work out,” Dillashaw said. “I’m still going to eat well, but my diet will be very different. It will almost be an Ironman [triathlon] approach, lot of aerobic workouts. It’s going to be a hell of a change for me. I’m not a big 135-pounder but I’m lean year-round.

“Right now, I’m at like 9 percent body fat. I’m willing to cut myself to a little under 6 percent. We’ve got it all calculated out and it’s going to be a lot of work, but if the juice is worth the squeeze, you do it.”

Is this a fight that intrigues you?

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are so close to meeting inside the squared circle.

For nearly a year a superfight between the UFC lightweight champion and the undefeated boxing legend has been discussed, and it wasn’t until recently when the fight became a potential reality. UFC President Dana White and McGregor have both confirmed that the Irishman’s side of things are done, as far as financial negotiations go, and all that awaits is Mayweather’s deal to get done.

As we previously mentioned, Mayweather was in attendance for Gervonta Davis’ (one of Mayweather’s fighters) IBF junior lightweight title defense in England over the weekend, where he was asked about potentially fighting McGregor. Mayweather stated that he believes the fight between he and “Mystic Mac” will happen (quotes via MMA Fighting):

““If me and Conor McGregor do happen to make the fight happen, which I think the fight will happen, I would love for [Davis] to be on the undercard. . . I had a great career, and my career may not be over. Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor, we’ll just wait and see.”

In the post-fight press conference, Mayweather was again asked about a possible McGregor bout and responded to McGregor coming to terms with Dana White for the fight. “Money” said that he’ll get together with his team soon and discuss what the next step is for him in his career:

“If he signed the contract – I’m over here working, I’m always working. . . When I get back over to the U.S., I’ll communicate with my team, I’ll call Al [Haymon, Mayweather’s manager], I’ll get Al and Leonard [Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions] on a business call to see what’s our next move. There’s no rush. When we do make the move, most likely it’s gonna be a huge move. You already know, when Floyd Mayweather fights, it’s history.

“If I do fight, it’s a 90 percent chance it’s against Conor McGregor.”

McGregor’s official Instagram

Mayweather continued to hype the superfight and said that he looks forward to signing his end of the deal, and looks forward to putting on another superfight for the combat sports world:

“They said Conor McGregor signed his end of the deal. I look forward to signing my end of the deal. I haven’t signed my end of the deal yet so once I get home, I’ll communicate with my team, I’ll talk with Al Haymon, I’ll talk with Leonard, and we’ll see what we come up with. We’ll put all our great minds together and we’re gonna have another superfight.”

If Mayweather and McGregor do share the ring it is sure to be a massive event – and the undefeated legend agrees:

“The next time Mayweather fights – if I fight, which most likely I will – I need a planet.”

The stage is set for one of the biggest combat sporting events of all-time, regardless of if it’s holding up the UFC in a big way. Are you exciting for the fight to finally get signed as Mayweather is teasing, or could you go without paying to see it?

Conor McGregor could possibly be stepping into the the boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. later this year and the combat sports world has mixed reviews on the subject.

One man who thinks McGregor not only should take on Mayweather inside the ring, but also pursue a career in the sport, is mixed martial arts (MMA) coach Mark Henry. Henry knows first-hand what McGregor is capable of, as he dispatched his star pupil Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden to win the UFC lightweight title.

Henry recently spoke to MMA Junkie regarding McGregor’s pursuit of Mayweather inside the squared circle, and stated that he believes the Irishman could make way more money in one boxing fight than he would in ’10 or 11 with the UFC’ (quotes via MMA Mania):

“Look, if I was Conor, I would definitely pursue the boxing, because he can make more in one fight than in 10 or 11 with the UFC,” Henry said. “But, while he’s doing it, they should definitely make another 155-pound belt, because it would be ridiculous if they didn’t.”

In addition to that, Henry also claimed that McGregor is one of the best boxers he has ever laid his eyes on, and believes “The Notorious One” has a shot against Mayweather in the first two rounds of the fight. After that, however, it’s going to be a rough night for the UFC lightweight champ:

“Conor is one of the best boxers I’ve ever seen – ever. From his precision to his power to his speed, and I think he has a shot in the first two rounds,” Henry added. “Because Mayweather, like a lot of boxers do when they’re sparring MMA guys, he may not think he’s that good.

“He might not realize how fast Conor is, and you’ve got to remember that Conor is going to be taller, longer, 13 years younger, and a southpaw. Early on, I’d give him a chance of doing some damage. But after that, it’s not going to be too good (for McGregor).”

No agreement for a bout is in place quite yet, as of this writing. Recently, however, it was announced by UFC President Dana White that McGregor’s side of the negotiations have been completed and all that remains is to sit down and negotiate with Mayweather and manager Al Haymon.

Mayweather is know for being difficult to come to an agreement with at the negotiation table, but he did recently state that he believes the fight between him and the MMA star would happen eventually.

Instagram

McGregor has already begun training for the potential contest and took to Twitter to call “Money” out and and tell him to ‘sign his end.’ Although some significant progress has been made to making the superfight happen, this is still only the beginning of the potential fight’s journey.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more…..

Although it may not be the first choice among MMA fans for Conor McGregor’s next bout, the infamous Irishman appears to be on a set course for his long-rumored boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Word recently arrived from UFC President Dana White that McGregor had signed off on his end of the deal and talks were progressing towards negotiating with Mayweather and his management, something that we may not be exactly sure what truly entails and could certainly take a ton more time to officially get sorted out.

The legendary Mayweather is notoriously tough to negotiate with, as his oft-discussed bout with Manny Pacquiao was bickered over for years before it finally happened in 2015 when both fighters were out of their true athletic primes and the resulting product left much to be desired. Indeed Mayweather always wants all of the specifics to be in his favor whenever he signs on for a high-profile bout, but at this point in time, McGregor may actually be the bigger star than the 40-year-old “Money.”

So things could still move at a snail’s pace, so McGregor challenged Mayweather to get moving and sign his end of the bargain in a post to his official Instagram account today:

Solid work today. Sign your end Floyd or you are just a mouth.

A post shared by Conor McGregor Official (@thenotoriousmma) on

It’s a hardline stance from McGregor, who understandably wants the rumored nine-figure payday that comes with boxing arguably the greatest boxer of all-time in the undefeated Mayweather. For the UFC and MMA as a whole, it may not be as great, however, if the sport’s biggest star was thoroughly demolished by a boxing great who is out of his prime as most are predicting will happen.

There’s also the issue of the talented lightweight division currently being on hold and being held up for much longer if McGregor doesn’t defend his championship inside the octagon this year. Those issues probably don’t matter to McGregor, but they certainly could become detrimental to the promotion as a whole in the coming months.

The UFC is kind of hamstrung by their need for big-name fights, so they have to roll with McGregor vs. Mayweather as it’s clearly their best chance for a huge payday during a down year in 2017. If that’s a good thing for MMA remains to be seen.

First things first, though, and Mayweather obviously has to maneuver his way through the negotiations in order to actually make it to the fight, something that could realistically be many months away if it ever happens. Do you believe the always-choosy Mayweather is close to signing on to fight McGregor, or is the build-up simply reaching an all-time high without much to show for it?
