Israel Adesanya turned a lot of heads over the weekend (Sat. November 3, 2018) at Madison Square Garden.

“Style Bender” made easy work of Derek Brunson to open up the UFC 230 pay-per-view (PPV) card. The young striker established himself as a rising title contender at 185 pounds. However, he wasn’t the only middleweight who had a big night in New York.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza also picked up an impressive victory of his own. The Brazilian knocked out Chris Weidman in the third round of their co-main event bout. Souza was likely down on the judges’ scorecards heading into the third round and was able to pick up the finish.

Many predict the next match-up to be made is a title eliminator between Souza and Adesanya. If that’s the case, Souza doesn’t seem to be too worried. Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion admitted he wasn’t impressed by Adesanya’s performance at UFC 230:

”He did a nice job. But what he did, I did better, and twice — and I’m not even a striker —, so what he’s saying makes no sense.

“He’s talking crap. Well, (Adesanya) is good, excellent, has a phenomenal future, is a phenomenal athlete, has a good game. But he didn’t impress me, no, because I did better than him. Twice.”

The winner of a potential Souza vs. Adesanya bout could take on the middleweight champion next. While a date has yet to be officially announced, current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum in the next few months.

It’s believed that fight will take place from Whittaker’s backyard of Melbourne, Australia on February 10, 2019, at UFC 234.

UFC President Dana White had some words of praise for Israel Adesanya after his impressive win at UFC 230. But he still wants to bring the fighter up slow.

Adesanya did a little bit of everything last night. He demonstrated why so many are high on his ability in the Octagon. For nearly the entire fight it looked as if Derek Brunson didn’t even belong in the same cage as him.

White offered his praise at the UFC 230 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting), noting Adesanya put a ‘stamp on his stoppage:

“Israel has been a guy who has been on the rise here for a minute, but I really felt like tonight was his first big test,” White said “His opponent hits like a truck and wrestles really well, and Madison Square Garden, opening the show, man, did he deliver. Many people — including me — think this kid is the future. And he went out and put a stamp on it tonight.”

Future Is Bright

If it wasn’t for Daniel Cormier, who continued making history last night, Adesanya may have been the clear-cut “Fighter of the Year” for 2018. He is unbeaten overall with a record of 15-0. More importantly, ‘The Last Stylebender’ is 4-0 this year in the UFC.

Although he doesn’t plan on fighting again this year, a certain rumored fight has caught his eye. UFC 234 will be in Melbourne, Australia in February. Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is rumored to be defending his title against Kelvin Gastelum in the main event. Adesanya would like to serve as the standby in case disaster may strike. A “Last Stylebender” plan, if you will.

A title shot is almost certainly in Adesanya’s future, but White would like the young man to slow his roll a bit. He looked back at his first impression of Adesanya and knew he had found a big talent. White said he is the total package but wants him to “pump the brakes”:

“The minute I saw this kid, I was like, holy sh-t this is really good, I like this,” White said. “Then you hear him talk, I like that too. He’s the whole package. He is very ambitious, I would like him to pump the brakes a little bit. This guy wants to f—king fight everybody right now and he wants to fight every month, which I love.

Dana’s Advice

White offered advice to Adesanya to find a spot in between fighting all the time and not enough.

“Listen, you want to become a big star? Keep fighting. If you’re a young guy who’s healthy enough to fight all the time, I absolutely advise it. Do it. What you don’t want to do is put on a great performance and disappear because people forget real quickly. But yeah, I like him very, very much and I don’t want to move him as fast as he wants to be moved, so he and I will get together and find a happy medium.”

Let us know what you think. Is Adesanya being moved along too quickly, or do you think he could challenge for a title his next fight?

The UFC’s annual Madison Square Garden pay-per-view (PPV) event is in the books. UFC 230 provided some great bouts and moments for fans in New York.

Daniel Cormier defended his title against “The Black Beast” Derrick Lewis in the main event, Chris Weidman and Jacaré Souza put on a show for the fans in an instant classic middleweight co-main event. The rest of the PPV main card was entertaining and not to mention the prelims provided us with some fantastic fights.

After a whirlwind weekend of fights, it can be difficult to organize your thoughts regarding the outcomes. After all, there were a total of 12 fights at UFC 230. That’s why we here at LowkickMMA have done the legwork for you.

Here are the six biggest takeaways from an insane UFC 230.

“DC” Has Claim At Being GOAT

At this point in his Hall of Fame career, it can be argued that Daniel Cormier is in the running for greatest of all-time.

The 39-year-old Cormier will most likely hang up the gloves after he fights Brock Lesnar in the first quarter of 2019. If he beats Lesnar as most expect he will, he will retire with a record of 23-1(1) with the only loss being to his rival Jon Jones.

Whether he is competing at light heavyweight or he is defending his title at heavyweight, “DC” just gets it done. He is a winner in every sense of the word.

His victory over Derrick Lewis was expected, but the manner in which Cormier beat Lewis is what continually impresses fight fans. ‘DC” didn’t have to absorb one power punch from “The Black Beast.” He was able to execute his game plan to a tee.

It’s my belief that not only does Cormier have a claim at being the GOAT, but I believe he has dominated time and again that he is deserving of that title.
