Scott Coker Discusses Eddie Alvarez Possibly Re-Signing With Bellator

Could “The Underground King” be on his way back to Bellator?

The post Scott Coker Discusses Eddie Alvarez Possibly Re-Signing With Bellator appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

There’s been a ton of speculation on if Eddie Alvarez could be returning to Bellator MMA.

Bellator MMA President Scott Coker was asked about the matter by MMA Fighting at Bellator 206 media day. In regards to seeing Alvarez back in Bellator, Coker said it doesn’t seem likely at this point. He admitted Bellator personnel spoke to Alvarez, but nothing came out of it :

“It doesn’t seem likely at this point,” Coker said. “I think that they had a conversation with Eddie and I’m not sure where it’s at. But I don’t think it took a second, it wasn’t like it was something that was picking up any steam so I’m not sure.”

Alvarez was previously with Bellator and was essentially the face of the promotion. He even competed on Bellator 1 in 2009. “The Underground King” put on a pair of absolute classic 155-pound title fights with Michael Chandler.

Unfortunately, the Philadelphia native didn’t get along too well with former promotion President Bjorn Rebney. He was later released from his contract in 2014 before signing with the UFC. Alvarez defeated Rafael dos Anjos via first-round knockout to win the UFC lightweight title in July of 2016.

Later that year, Alvarez would be one-half of one of the biggest fights in UFC history. He headlined the UFC’s first card from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Unfortunately for him, he dropped the 155-pound title to Conor McGregor via second-round knockout.

Alvarez fought out the final bout on his UFC contract this past July. He put on a heavy-hitting affair with Dustin Poirier in Calgary, which he lost via TKO. It will be interesting to see where “The Underground King” winds up.

Second UFC 229 Press Conference Will Be Open To Fans

If you thought the first #UFC 229 presser was insane, wait until you factor in McGregor’s rowdy Irish fans.

Prepare for the biggest fight week, arguably, in UFC history.

Next weekend (Sat. October 6, 2018) Conor McGregor will make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon. The Irishman will challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound title. Title aside, McGregor and Nurmagomedov have some deeply personal issues with one another.

Last week, McGregor and Khabib participated in a press conference to promote the fight. Despite the fact that the event was still outrageous, it was not open to the public as per usual. McGregor’s press conference appearances are usually elevated by his rowdy Irish fans egging him on in the crowd.

While we didn’t get to witness that last week, fear not, for the return of the Irish is upon us. The UFC has announced that a second press conference is scheduled for this Thursday (October 4, 2018). McGregor and Khabib will verbally joust once again, but this time, it will be open to the public.

New York City played host to the first presser between McGregor and Khabib. Thursday’s festivities will take place from the Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference will kick off at 3:00 PT. McGregor, Khabib, and UFC President Dana White will all be present for the event.

For those of you in the Las Vegas area wishing to attend, admission is free. McGregor and Khabib will settle their differences inside the cage two days later. UFC 229 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 6th.

Josh Barnett Plans For MMA Return Next Year

Josh Barnett is ready to get back to his fighting ways next year.

The post Josh Barnett Plans For MMA Return Next Year appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Its been two years since former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett has competed in mixed martial arts (MMA).

Barnett submitted Andrei Arlovski under the UFC banner in Germany, earning both Performance Of The Night and Fight Of The Night honors. Shortly after, Barnett had a falling out with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and subsequently came to terms with a release from his UFC deal.

He’s currently a free agent and ready to listen to offers for an MMA return that interests him. Away from fighting, Barnett is active in the worlds of grappling and professional wrestling. He is a commentator for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) on AXS TV.

Barnett is also a part of Kazushi Sakuraba’s team for an upcoming four-team Quintet show. At the Quintet 3 open workouts, Barnett spoke about a possible MMA return. He said fans can expect to see him back sometime next year (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“It’s got to excite me,” said Barnett. “It has to be the right name, the right time, the right setting, it has to fit in with the rest of my schedule.

“I’m not going to lock down to one promoter. I still want to fight, you’ll see me fight sometime next year, it’s just a matter of when and where.”

Bellator MMA has made a habit of picking up former UFC stars. They have signed the likes of Rory MacDonald, Gegard Mousasi, Benson Henderson, Matt Mitrione, and many more. Perhaps Scott Coker will ink Barnett down to a deal as well.

Former UFC title challenger and longtime color commentator Kenny Florian may have retired from MMA back in 2011, but the Ultimate Fighter season one veteran has continued to compete at jiu-jitsu tournaments ever since.

Florian took on Vitor Ribeiro at the Abu Dhabi World Championship over the weekend, and the result was not in the former UFC fighters’ favor.

“Shaolin” Ribeiro managed to choke the 40-year-old with a clock choke after a spirited effort by Florian. The Brazilian used his right hip to control the former UFC contender, and ultimately used his forearm to choke Florian’s throat after nearly five minutes of action.

The choke was so slick and quickly applied that many in attendance and those watching  via stream were unaware that Florian had been choked unconscious. Prior to the choke, Florian managed to stifle the Brazilian with an effective De La Riva guard and the match was indeed a close one up until the finish.

Ribeiro himself competed in MMA as well, and has not fought professionally since a 2010 loss to Justin Wilcox under the Strikeforce banner. The Brazilian compiled a 20-5 record in mixed martial arts, with 14 of those victories coming by way of submission or (technical) knockout.

K-Flo retired from the sport after a tough decision loss to then-undisputed featherweight champion Jose Aldo back at UFC 136. Florian has remained a popular figure within the promotion and frequently acts as color commentator during UFC events on FOX and FS1.

“Shaolin” has also retired from active competition in mixed martial arts, and runs his own Jiu-Jitsu school in New York City.

UFC welterweight Matt Brown faced a lot of adversity this past weekend in Brazil. First off he enraged the Brazilian crowds during the weigh-ins for his feature prelim bout with home favorite Demian Maia, flipping them off amid chants of ‘you’re going to die’ from the 15,000 strong crowd. Then came the night of the fight, and ‘The Immortal’ was mobbed by angry fans on the way to the octagon. He was struck a number of times, finally striking back with a right hand as one fan yanked the hood of his Reebok outfit.

Demian-Maia-vs.-Matt-Brown[1]

It’s never a good start whn you get hit before you’ve even got started fighting, whether it impacted on Brown’s performance is unknown, but he certainly got dominated by the far superior grappler. Maia controlled ‘The Immortal’ much to the delight of the 45,000 seater stadium which was packed to the gills. The partisan supporters raised the roof on the arena as Maia submitted Brown in the third round.

Here’s the video replay of the fight before the fight:
So after taking some strife before the fact, then getting burnt by Maia in rather convincing fashion, it looked as though Brown’s excursion to Brazil couldn’t get much worse. That statement couldn’t be any further from the truth, as ‘The Immortal’ was jumped by an old acquaintance in the UFC 198 host hotel the morning after the event…
