With speculation continuing to circulate regarding whether or not this past weekend’s (Sat. January 21, 2017) Bellator 170 main event between Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen was fixed or not, the bout’s referee, ‘Big’ John McCarthy, has a solution to settle the debate once and for all.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, McCarthy stated he would love to put the fight-fix accusers in the same choke Sonnen was in, then ask them again whether or not they believe the fight was a sham:

“What I would love if I could do it is take people that say that’s a fix (and say), ‘Good, I’m going to put you in that hold that he was in, and I want you to feel it. I want you to see how strong Tito Ortiz really is. I want you to feel the pressure that Chael was under.’ You could see even on the screen how purple his face was starting to get.

“That choke was not what we’d say is a perfect choke. It’s not. It’s on one side of his neck. But trust me, on one side, you start to shut down that one carotid artery, it will put him out. It will just take a lot longer.”

After McCarthy waived the fight off following Sonnen’s tap, Ortiz held onto the choke a little longer than he should have due to the ill-will between him and ‘The Bad Guy’ leading up to the contest. ‘Big John’ stated he had to insert his thumb into Ortiz’s trachea to force Ortiz to break the hold:

“I don’t want to hurt Tito, but if you’re not listening and you’re trying to hurt Chael, my job is to protect Chael,” he said. “If you want to be dumb, then you’re going to end up feeling something that’s not comfortable.”

Ortiz admitted he hung on to the choke a little longer due to Sonnen’s trash-talk leading up to the contest, making a rather personal remark about his ex-wife, something that didn’t at all surprise McCarthy:

“I think that was 21st fight I’ve done with Tito Ortiz,” he said. “I’ve known Tito since he was a teenager. Tito is a great guy. Now, he does get emotional. He’s the one that really came up (and he) started doing that trash talk, and he has his rules for trash talk. But they’re his rules, and no one else has to follow his rules.

“Chanel’s got his own thing. And now, Chael’s said some things at times that I go, ‘Yeah, you just don’t do that.’ But that’s Chael, and Chael’s going to say those things.

“If you’re smart, Chael is selling the fight. He’s making people look and say, ‘We’ve got heat.’ He keeps on saying things to get under the skin of Tito and to make it look like they have this thing. But in the end, the best part of fighting is, OK you’ve said all these things, but there’s going to be the day that comes up where I get to punch you in the middle of the face for all those things you said.”

UFC 207’s Two Bantamweight Title Fights Get Referee & Judge Assignments

The third person in the ring for each of the two UFC Bantamweight Championship fights at UFC 207 was determined at today’s Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting in Las Vegas. The same goes for the judges at cage side who will determine the winners if either bout goes the distance. Here are the official assignments per MMAJunkie:

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship: Amanda Nunes (c) vs. Ronda Rousey

  • Referee: Herb Dean
  • Judges: Adalaide Byrd, Sal D’Amato and Chris Lee

UFC Men’s Bantamweight Championship Dominick Cruz (c) vs. Cody Garbrandt

  • Referee: John McCarthy
  • Judges: Derek Cleary, Jeff Mullen and Tony Weeks

Of Ronda Rousey’s professional fights, Herb Dean had previously refereed her title first defense, where she fought Sarah Kaufman (first round submission win), her third UFC title defense, against Sara McMann (first round body shot TKO win), and her title loss to Holly Holm (second round TKO). Aside from the head kick knockout itself, possibly the most memorable visual of the Holm fight was Dean clutching Rousey as she screamed “NO!!” when she realized she lost her title. The McMann fight is also notable for being considered an early stoppage in some circles. Dean dead also officiated four of Nunes’ fights, but there was nothing particularly memorable about the officiating.

Barring a regional fight with an incomplete record in the Fight Finder, John McCarthy has never refereed a Dominick Cruz bout before. McCarthy was in the cage for Garbrandt’s last two fights though, showing excellent judgment in when he called the stoppage for “No Love’s” knockout wins.

Roy Nelson’s decision to make a public apology to referee John McCarthy paid off, as the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA reduced his fine and suspension.

The STJDMMA had fined Nelson $24,000 and suspended him for nine months after he kicked McCarthy following a win over Antonio Silva earlier this year in Brazil.

Earlier this month, “Big Country” apologized following weigh-ins in Las Vegas for his actions. The STJDMMA reduced the penalty to six months and the fine to $13,700.

“First I’d like to apologize to the fans who make our sport,” Nelson told a group of reporters in Las Vegas last Friday (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quotes). “To the Brazilian commission, John McCarthy and the rest of the world, my team and especially my family for my actions in my last fight.

“My actions were out of character. I have nothing against anyone, including John McCarthy. I recognize what I did was a mistake and I was wrong. I can’t apologize enough to John McCarthy, to the commission, and to MMA fans around the world. I can’t wait to get back into the Octagon to entertain the fans.”

The suspension will end late in March.

Controversy struck after Roy Nelson’s knockout victory over Antonio Silva on Sept. 24 at UFC Fight Night 95, as “Big Country” elected to kick veteran referee John McCarthy because he felt as if the fight should’ve been stopped sooner. Last month, Nelson was handed a nine months suspension and a $24,000 fine by the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA for his actions.

The STJDMMA, however, then said that Nelson could lessen his punishment to a six month suspension and a $13,700 fine if he were to apologize to McCarthy in the Octagon or at a press conference before Dec. 31. “Big Country” hasn’t performed either of those requests, but he did recently release a statement apologizing to “Big” John:

“First I’d like to apologize to the fans who make our sport,” Nelson told a group of reporters in Las Vegas (Via MMAFighting). “To the Brazilian commission, John McCarthy and the rest of the world, my team and especially my family for my actions in my last fight.

It’s currently unclear whether or not Nelson’s suspension will be reduced.

The Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA has handed down its punishment for Roy Nelson.

According to MMAFighting, Nelson has been suspended nine months and fined $24,000 for kicking referee John McCarthy this past September following his win over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

The report stated that Nelson could have been suspended for 25 months and fined $40,000. The STJDMMA talked with Nelson before issuing the fine and suspension, to which “Big Country” mentioned concerns over fighting in Brazil because of the fans and his previous issues with McCarthy.

The STJDMMA did give Nelson an opening to have the fine and suspension cut. If he apologizes in public – he made an apology to McCarthy after the post-fight press conference – the fine would be cut to $13,700 and suspension to six months.
