The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has always proven to be a fertile breeding ground for interesting, bizarre, oddball, and off-the-wall characters.

In this article, we’ll celebrate that fact by taking a closer look at 10 of the craziest, one-of-a-kind fighters ever to have set foot in the cage.

Charles ‘Krazy Horse’ Bennett

MMA veteran Charles Bennett undoubtedly owns one of the most fitting nicknames in MMA – ‘Krazy Horse.’

Outside of the cage, Bennett has a long criminal record, being arrested multiple times for everything from possessing and selling drugs to robbery and aggravated assault, but it’s his outrageous antics in the cage and ring that he’s best known for.

For instance, in ‘King Of The Cage,’ he once picked up an opponent, gave the ‘peace’ sign to a nearby camera, then proceeded to swing his opponent in the air and slam him into the cage – a unique move later named, ‘the helicopter slam.’

Meanwhile, in an infamous backstage incident during PRIDE Shockwave 2005, Bennett got into a fight with Cristiano Marcello and was choked out on camera, only to regain consciousness and then claim afterward that he KO’d Wanderlei Silva.

The latter incident wasn’t caught on tape and has been hotly disputed ever since, and years later Bennett joked that the still fuming Brazilian would never be able to get to him, because, “I’m a n**ger’ and I run real fast.”

Video: Heavyweight Fakes Heart Attack & Drops Opponent, Still Loses

This is one of the strangest things you’ve ever seen in MMA.

Prior to this week’s International Fight Week, there wasn’t a UFC event on tap this weekend, making it devoid of high-profile MMA events save for Friday night’s Bellator 201.

However, that didn’t prevent one of the strangest events you’ve ever seen in a mixed martial arts (MMA) cage from occurring at last night’s Colosseum Combat 45 when longtime competitor Travis Fulton met journeymen heavyweight Jonathan Ivey.

Ivey used a rarely-seen move by faking a heart attack and then sucker punching Fulton, dropping him to the ground for what could have potentially been fight-ending ground and pound.

But after a short while, Ivey, who’s apparently a Fulton fan and even has a tattoo of him (yes, he has a tattoo of the opponent he sucker punched), had a change of heart and decided to take a step back and tap out to give the victory to his hero.

Yes, this actually happened. Watch it via Caposa on Twitter here:

As you may recall, UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock scored a rare victory over Jonathan Ivey last month at a USA MMA event in Lousiana. If you’d like to see the full 15-minute battle, the video is currently in our "Fight of the Week" section over on the right. (Scroll down a bit. Yeah, there it is.) The above highlights package from Inside MMA saves you a lot of time by rounding up the important moments, like when Ivey knocks Shammy down, and later when he slaps his own titties and shouts at Ken to bring it on, like an enraged, diabetic Nick Diaz.

But the best moment comes right before the end of the fight when Ivey does a pair of somersaults for no apparent reason; we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was rolling for a kneebar, then dodged out of the way when he couldn’t catch it. Kenny Rice describes it both as a "Rerun impression" and "the dreidel defense." Oy vey, Ivey!

Bonus, after the jump: Jonathan Ivey gets beat up by "very internet savvy" UFC heavyweight Sean McCorkle, at an LFC event in May.
