After fighting to a draw with Anderson Silva this weekend, Chael Sonnen is not planning on slowing down now as he looks to usher in the next phase of his combat sports career.

After the battle, Sonnen wasted no time before cutting a sinister promo on the mic during the post-fight media scrum. Blasting Jorge Masvidal for his foolish business practices and claiming he couldn’t remember the last time Masvidal won a fight.

Chael Sonnen Speaks on Looming Jorge Masvidal Fight

“This whole thing was just part of the process,” Chael Sonnen began, speaking on the Anderson Silva fight (H/T MMA Fighting). “I’m boxing Jorge Masvidal. I got called out for that fight, I have agreed to that fight, this was all part of the training process, and I learned some stuff tonight. Anderson, when he gets going, he tricked me a number of times, and I do not like to get tricked in there. I like to see that stuff coming. But, I mean, he would move one way and hit you with the other, he’d show you the right hand and then hit you with the left. He was very tricky and he was very fast.

“I only say that because the guy is the better part of 50. If he is tricking me to the point that he can get some of those hands on me, I’m going to have to respect Jorge Masvidal a little bit more than I wanted to.”

Despite already being booked for a fight against Nate Diaz, Masvidal and Sonnen have publically traded insults a few times now.

“Masvidal’s a little bit overrated, in all fairness, within his own mind,” Chael Sonnen said. “I can’t remember the last time that he won a fight. He gave me a threat, he said, ‘I won’t even use my right hand. I’ll put that in the contract.’ I’m like, ‘OK, stupid, put that in the contract. I didn’t ask for that, but go ahead and put that in there.’ Then he talks about, ‘I’m going to pay you $10 million.’ Well, I didn’t ask for $10 million, but again, stupid, put that in the contract. Just keep talking.

“It just keeps getting worse for Jorge Masvidal. There’s some people you play with, there’s some people you don’t; put me in the category of ‘don’t.’ Do not challenge me unless you want to fight me.”

Following the culmination of their latest press event ahead of their July boxing fight rematch, a mass brawl broke out between Jorge Masvidal and rival, Nate Diaz’s respective teams, with the mayhem spilling out into the media section and amongst the audience.

Masvidal, a former undisputed welterweight title challenger twice under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined from combat sports since he featured in his native Miami back in April of last year, dropping his fourth consecutive loss in a decision defeat against Gilbert Burns.

Diaz Masvidal Face off

As for Diaz, the Stockton veteran and former UFC star has himself been out of action since he made a professional boxing debut in August of last year, dropping a decision defeat of his own against polarizing striker, Jake Paul

And seeing a planned boxing fight rematch slated for the beginning of this month shelved, Masvidal and Diaz will now share the ring next month in Las Vegas, with the duo rekindling their rivalry following a 2019 fight under the banner of the UFC.

Taking part in a lengthy media tour – which saw The Ultimate Fighter winner, Diaz bow out ahead of a planned face-off with his rival, Masvidal – the Stockton native pulled a similar move today, leaving the stage before a staredown.

Shuffling down to the audience and media row, members of Masvidal and Diaz’s teams began taunting each other back-and-forth – with the above-mentioned Floridian igniting a mass brawl between both teams.

First sharing the Octagon back in November 2019 in the main event of UFC 245, Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz competed for the inaugural BMF title under the banner of the promotion.

Headlining the Madison Square Garden card, Masvidal turned in a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Diaz, after opening a massive laceration over the right eye of the Stockon fan-favorite.

Jorge Masvidal reveals the biggest regret of his UFC career: 'I fought for everything I could'

While reflecting on his UFC career, Jorge Masvidal has one major regret.

After a mostly middling career in combat sports, ‘Gamebred’ seemingly turned a corner in 2019, starting with a knockout of Darren Till at UFC on ESPN+ 5. He followed that up with perhaps the most-watched highlight in MMA history.

Returning to the Octagon four months later, Masvidal dispatched former Bellator and ONE world champion Ben Askren in five seconds with the flying knee heard around the world.

Adding a win over Nate Diaz to claim the inaugural BMF belt that same year, Jorge Masvidal went from midcarder to superstar overnight.

Unfortunately, Masvidal’s star fizzled out almost as fast as it grew, kickstarting with a short-notice welterweight title fight at UFC 251 against then-champion Kamaru Usman.

“It’s a regret, but also not a regret,” Masvidal said during an appearance on The TimboSugarShow with Sean O’Malley and Tim Welch. “When I got the call to fight [Kamaru] Usman on six days’ notice, me and the UFC had been going back because I wanted more pay-per-view money. I wanted a bigger distribution on the pay-per-views than I was bringing in. They weren’t budging on that. If I bring in money, I want to get paid money. If I sell 100 thousand pay-per-views, then don’t give me sh*t, but I wanted to get f*cking paid.

“That was going on for a while and then we came to a halt and I was like, ‘F*ck, whatever bro. I guess it’s not meant to be.’ In Strikeforce, I fought for the lightweight world title, and the UFC had already purchased the company, but I got a sh*t deal. The fight kept getting pushed back and I made $16,000 to challenge for the world title, against the guy who was top-rated in the world. Then I had all of the chips on my side, because who was going to cut all this weight in six days, make weight, and at the time I was number one.

“So they didn’t have any choice. I fought for everything I could, I made more money than I ever had in my career, but I didn’t get the decision I wanted in that fight. It would’ve been completely different [if it was seven weeks’ notice]” (h/t BJPenn.com)

Jorge Masvidal turns to boxing to snap four-fight losing skid

After five rounds, Jorge Masvidal lost on all three judges’ scorecards, handing Usman a unanimous decision victory. The two would run it back the following year with the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ scoring a vicious second-round KO against ‘Gamebred’ at UFC 261, bringing their rivalry to an end emphatically.

Jorge Masvidal

Masvidal would go on to lose his next two fights against Colby Covington and Gilbert Burns before walking away from the promotion on a four-fight losing skid.

Despite not seeing his hand raised in nearly five years, Masvidal continues to be a notable name, parlaying his ‘Gamebred’ brand into a successful fight promotion that features both bare-knuckle MMA and professional boxing bouts. On July 6, Masvidal will lace up the eight-ounce gloves for a rematch with Nate Diaz inside the squared circle.

Emanating from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, the fight will be a co-promotion between Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing and Diaz’s Real Fight Inc. You can purchase the event for $79.99 through the Fanmio app.

Jorge Masvidal is still eager to get the chance to fight Conor McGregor, despite ‘Gamebred’ having concerns the Irishman would take it.

Masvidal announced his retirement from MMA following his loss to Gilbert Burns, but he is set to return to the boxing ring on July 6 against Nate Diaz. After the boxing match, whether or not Masvidal will return to the UFC is uncertain, but ‘Gamebred’ is still interested in the bout with McGregor.

ESPN posted a photo asking fans who they think would have won had Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal fought in 2019.

Taking to the comments, Masvidal responded and seemed to show interest in making the fight happen.

“We can still find out… Too big of a man for that little leprechaun,” Masvidal wrote.

If Masvidal does return to the UFC, a fight against McGregor would be massive. However, the Irishman is focused on his return to the Octagon at UFC 303 on June 29 against Michael Chandler.

Jorge Masvidal has continued to claim Conor McGregor doesn’t want to fight him

This isn’t the first time that Jorge Masvidal has claimed Conor McGregor doesn’t want to fight him.

Back in 2022, Masvidal took aim at McGregor as ‘Gamebred’ says the Irishman didn’t want to fight him which is why the bout never happened.

“Conor doesn’t want the fight,” Masvidal said. “If he did he’d post something, he’d say something. He’d probably just insult my mom or some relative of mine or my nation where I come from. He’ll say something like that but he won’t say anything about a fight or a fight date. So the Conor thing, he just wants it ‘I hope it goes away’ because he really doesn’t want to fight. He doesn’t mention [me] or say anything.

“I think the only thing that makes him want to get out of bed is cocaine. That’s OK, every man has a free will. You do whatever you want. But don’t say you’re a fighter and don’t take cheap shots at me, especially the things that he’s been saying, talking about my legal problems and this and that,” Masvidal continued.

Masvidal is 35-17 in MMA but is on a four-fight losing streak.

Jorge Masvidal reveals reason for Nate Diaz fight date change: 'This guy's such a diva and a coward'

Jorge Masvidal is not thrilled about having to wait another five weeks to get his hands on Nate Diaz.

Originally, ‘Gamebred’ and the ‘Stockton Samurai’ were scheduled to step inside the squared circle on June 1. However, those plans quickly changed when it was revealed that the UFC would hold its next pay-per-view event on that same date.

Now, Masvidal and Diaz’s long-awaited rematch will go down on Saturday, July 6. In addition to the date change, the event will also switch up its location, moving from the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California to the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz

“You don’t want to go up against other dates and other fight events,” Masvidal told ESPN. “Especially, you don’t want to go up against UFC. So, from the beginning, I was trying to switch this date. Nate’s a f*cking idiot. He was adamant about staying on that date because he’s not a UFC employee no more and, ‘I don’t have to do nothing for the UFC,’ and this and that.

“It just doesn’t make sense, especially when I know Nate thinks he’s a boxer now because he boxed the Jake Paul guy, but he’s not a boxer. He doesn’t have a boxing fanbase. The fanbase that he has is from MMA and UFC. So, why go up against our own fanbase? Me as a promoter, I’m thinking I don’t even want to do it. I know a lot of fight fans would buy both or watch both events, but in my opinion, why even do it if there were dates that weren’t conflicting?” (h/t MMA Mania).

Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz set to run back their instant classic at UFC 244

When Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz meet in The Golden State, it will be their second time competing against one another, the first coming at UFC 244 in 2019 for the inaugural BMF title. ‘Gamebred’ won the fight via a doctor’s stoppage following the conclusion of the third round. It was the last fight Masvidal would win inside the Octagon before retiring from MMA in 2023.

Jorge Masvidal

“I don’t like that another month and a week got added to this already long training camp,” Masvidal said. “In hindsight, it doesn’t really matter because I’m making the transition from one sport to another. So the more time I get to practice and perfect my craft, sharpen my tools, it doesn’t hurt me or bother me.

“Now, Nate Diaz’s ass is somebody that does bother me and I want to f*ck him up. We could have had this fight at an earlier date but this guy’s such a f*cking diva and a f*cking coward that he wouldn’t want to fight in Miami, didn’t want to fight in Texas because things didn’t go his way in Texas against Jake Paul. Didn’t want to fight in New York. Didn’t want to fight in California unless it was in his hometown. I’m here pent up, frustrated, training my ass off every day just to get in there with this guy, and f*cking hurt him.”

Nate Diaz walked away from the UFC in 2022 following a fourth-round submission victory over Tony Ferguson. 11 months later, he would make his boxing debut in a 10-round clash with YouTube star Jake Paul. ‘The Problem Child’ won the bout via unanimous decision.
