Leon Edwards is ready to throw down, but he says Jorge Masvidal has other plans. Edwards and Masvidal aren’t likely to exchange Christmas cards later this year. Back in March, the two were involved in a backstage incident post-UFC London. Masvidal’s post-fight interview with Laura Sanko was interrupted when he exchanged words with Edwards. The […]

Colby Covington will get the next crack at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title according to UFC president Dana White.
Covington comfortably outpointed Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark this past weekend and the wheels were in motion right away as he and Usman talked trash to each other during the post-fight show.
Many previously believed there was a chance Jorge Masvidal would get the next title shot over Covington. However, that is no longer the case:
“Yeah, that’s why I put Covington on ESPN against a guy like Lawler,” White said when asked if Covington would receive the next title shot. “You can say whatever you want about Covington, you don’t like him, you don’t this, that, or whatever. He put on a clinic against Lawler, who is a beast.
“Lawler’s been in all the big fights — former world champion, hits like a truck and Colby completely shut him down. His cardio was impressive and the way that he beat Lawler was even more impressive.”
So if that’s the case, where does that leave Masvidal?
Chael Sonnen believes it opens up the possibility of that Conor McGregor fight. And while “Gamebred” and his management have stated that they only want him to face the Irishman next or get a title shot, White has his own plans:
“You can’t make ultimatums,” White responded when asked about Masvidal. “We’re going to offer him a fight, and if he accepts the fight, he does and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”
Masvidal’s co-manager Abraham Kawa would respond soon after:
What do you think of White’s comments and his plans for the division?

Chael Sonnen pondered whether a Conor McGregor vs. Jorge Masvidal fight is more likely following Colby Covington’s win at UFC Newark. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore at least. However, there is another big fight that has been discussed for Masvidal which is McGregor. And Sonnen believes it makes sense to go ahead with it now:
“It would seem to me that we are going to see Colby vs. Usman,” Sonnen said in a recent video. “Fine, no problem. But it does leave an odd man out and that is Masvidal. I think we can all agree that Masvidal deserves something great.
“He’s going to have to fight Leon Edwards. It just seems to me… Masvidal probably deserves something bigger than that. I’d be remiss to mention there is one guy missing. Some guys would rather have [him] in front of a championship or even a main event [and that] is Conor McGregor.
“Conor vs. Masvidal is a really big fight. It’s heel vs. heel. It’s bad guy vs. bad guy. Who could be worse? It’s amazing from a box office standpoint. And I feel as though the storyline has been laid a little bit and Conor does need something to do and Masvidal does deserve something big to do.“
Sonnen isn’t necessarily stating that McGregor vs. Masvidal will happen next — but he certainly believes it’s on the table.
“…It’s on the table for sure,” he concluded. “Something great is going to happen for Jorge Masvidal. Something great always happens for Conor McGregor. It’s worth talking about.”

Askren suffered the misfortune of receiving the quickest knockout in UFC history when he was at the end of a flying knee from Masvidal last month. It was a first professional defeat for “Funky” and recently appearing on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday, he spoke of how he ruined his life’s dream.
As for Masvidal, his popularity has further skyrocketed and there has even been talk of him potentially facing Conor McGregor next, if not a welterweight title shot. And Askren believes all this is because of him:
“I will acknowledge that I made him this popular,” Askren said (via MMA Mania). “I brought the best in him. So it’s fine, it’s part of the game. We were the most anticipated fight by far on the biggest card of the year. And it definitely wasn’t because Jorge decided not to show up to two different press events. It was because I made it that way.
“Jorge can say I’m a dick, or whatever the hell he wants to say about me, but if he wasn’t so rude, he should probably say, ‘thank you for making me a lot of money.’”
Askren, meanwhile, looks set to face Demian Maia in the headliner for UFC Singapore later this year. He believes he now needs at least two wins to stake a claim for a welterweight title shot.
What do you think of Askren’s comments?Do you think he can get back into title contention?

Jorge Masvidal caught wind of Colby Covington’s recent UFC Newark post-fight comments and was not impressed.
Following his win over Robbie Lawler this past weekend, Covington took a shot at UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, who also happens to be close friends with Lawler.
“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight,” Covington said. “It’s a strong lesson that Robbie should’ve learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes. You stay off the tracks when the train’s coming through, junior. Don’t matter if there’s a Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way!”
Many in the mixed martial arts world were shocked by the comments. Hughes would react himself soon after, and to his credit, took it in stride. However, in a recent live stream Q&A, Masvidal said the comments were not even remotely funny.
“He did? I didn’t see that,” Masvidal said (via MMA News). “That’s not even remotely funny. That’s the stupidest sh*t I’ve ever heard if that’s real. …Super distasteful. Whatever, that’s kinda stupid of him.”
Masvidal and Covington were former roommates and training partners, and despite the latter’s claim that they are still best friends, it appears that things have become a little hostile between the two. However, it should come as no surprise either as the pair are on a collision course.
