Jorge Masvidal Calls Out 'Worst Referee' After UFC 306

Jorge Masvidal was not a fan of Herb Dean interjecting himself into Saturday’s main event clash between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili.

It was clear from the get-go that the longtime referee wasn’t going to tolerate any shenanigans in the UFC 306 — also known as Riyadh Season Noche UFC — headliner. Seconds after the bout began, Dean briefly paused the action to warn both Dvalishvili and O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, to stop engaging with one another. The moment was undoubtedly odd, but nothing that had any sort of impact on the fight itself.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only time Dean got involved in the five-round headliner. Throughout the contest, Dean continuously encouraged the fighters to work whether they were standing, on the mat, or clinched up against the fence.

The commentary trio of Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier expressed their frustration with Dean’s never-ending commands which eventually trickled down to social media where fighters and fans alike slammed the Pasadena native.

That includes the UFC’s original BMF, Jorge Masvidal, who held nothing back in his review of Dean’s performance.

Merab Dvalishvili dominates lackluster Noche UFC title fight

Dvalishvili’s fight with O’Malley had a little bit of everything; a stoppage for “excessive coaching,” an incident where Dean literally had to tell ‘The Machine’ not to “kiss” his opponent, and, of course, Dean’s constant demands to “keep working.”

But after all the antics and the drama were over, fans witnessed the crowning of a new UFC bantamweight champion. Dvalishvili ran away with the fight on the scorecards, securing a decisive unanimous decision to both extend his streak to 11 and claim his first piece of gold inside the Octagon.

What comes next for O’Malley is uncertain, but it appears to be much more clear on Dvalishvili’s side of things.

Jorge Masvidal expects great things out of the UFC’s highly anticipated debut at Sphere in Las Vegas.

On September 14, the UFC is set to present a combat sports event like no other alongside two massive world title clashes. In the co-main event of the evening, Valentina Shevchenko will look to reclaim the flyweight women’s title when he meets the division’s reigning queen, Alexa Grasso. Their trilogy fight comes one year removed from a controversial split draw in their rematch at last year’s Noche UFC event.

Then in the UFC 306 headliner, ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley puts his bantamweight gold for the second time in 2024 when he squares off with the division’s top-ranked contender, Merab Dvalishvili.

Having already seen an event inside Sphere first-hand, two-time welterweight title challenger Jorge Masvidal expects this weekend’s once-in-a-lifetime card to deliver something truly special.

“I don’t know if it’ll [the venue] impact the way they fight so much,” Masvidal told Kevin Iole. “It’s going to be an experience, though, because I’ve been in there [the Sphere] for a 3D show, and it was amazing. It was mind-blowing—the graphics, the stuff—but obviously, they’re not doing that now. But I still think they’ll play a lot of the graphics on their projectors and stuff, so it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“I really wish I could have made it to this event. The card is stacked from top to bottom with a lot of up-and-coming talent. It’s going to be f*cking amazing, maybe even some future world champions on this card right here. So I think it’s a great, great card, man” (h/t MMA News).

Jorge Masvidal excited for UFC 306 main event

Masvidal also shared his excitement for the long-awaited clash between O’Malley and ‘The Machine,’ suggesting that ‘Sugar’ could end things early, but it’ll ultimately come down to whoever keeps it “more real” inside the Octagon.

“The main event is one that I’ll be watching closely, brother. I’ll be watching the main event 100%. I’m a big fan of both of them. I love Merab’s style—just coming forward, does not give a f*ck, does not know how to get tired. This guy just has an unbelievable gas tank, is pretty good at wrestling, and now he’s mixing it up better, where he’s throwing punches and getting right to it.

“But Sean is a sniper—one shot, one kill type of guy. Great athlete with great distance, great timing, and the longer arms, so it’s going to be a battle. I think whoever can keep it more real is obviously going to win, but it’s going to be a battle no matter what. I think it’s going to end up being a really good fight, or maybe I can see Sean maybe catching him early too—you never know.”

Daniel Cormier talks Jorge Masvidal

Gamebred’ Jorge Masvidal is eyeing a UFC comeback, but former two-division champion Daniel Cormier doubts that he has much appeal at this point.

Daniel Cormier talks Jorge Masvidal

The American-Cuban athlete Jorge Masvidal was a journeyman MMA fighter who competed in different promotions such as Strikeforce, Bodog, and Bellator before signing with the UFC. After trading some wins and losses he found his stride in 2019 and picked up two impressive knockouts against Ben Askren and Darren Till plus a win over Nate Diaz.

More recently, Masvidal lost four in a row in the UFC against top welterweights before leaving the organization. Since then, he’s jumped over to professional boxing and had a closely fought loss against Nate Diaz. Additionally, ‘Gamebred’ has his own MMA fight promotions he runs.

In a recent interview, Jorge Masvidal outlined that he is looking at a UFC comeback. Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts on the matter. He said:

“Look at the names on his resume. At the end of the day, when you look at the career as a whole, it boils down to one year where Jorge Masvidal made you guys care. And it made him a star. But my question to you now is: Do you still care? Because that’s what he’s banking on…lost his last four MMA fights, and lost a boxing match. He said he’ll come back, starch somebody and the UFC would be begging him to fight for a championship…

“Do you care now? Like you did in 2019? Like you did when he was on that amazing run when he made himself from a guy that was a bit of a journeyman, into a main event attraction… he and Kamaru Usman sold a boatload of pay-per-views…in 2019 he did something I’ve never seen someone do in fighting before…to me, if Jorge Masvidal comes back, it has to be against someone that’s a fun fight…

I’d watch him fight, absolutely, but my question is do you care? He’s 39 years old now. The best days seem to be behind him, lost four in a row. in my regard, I believe with the work he was doing outside of the Octagon, his promotion seems to be doing well, and I was happy to see him walk away.” [Ht BJPenn]

Dustin Poirier has had an illustrious UFC career despite never winning an undisputed championship. He’s fought for the title three times, but came up short against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev. He did become the interim UFC lightweight kingpin by beating Max Holloway, though.

Colby Covington has had a similar run in the UFC welterweight division. He won the interim title by beating Rafael dos Anjos but is 0-3 in undisputed title fights against the likes of Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards.

Although both Covington and Poirier have still been adamant about fighting for titles, rumors suggest that they might meet in the Octagon soon. Here’s why Michael Bisping and award-winning broadcaster Adam Catterall are big fans of the matchup…

Michael Bisping Excited To See Dustin Poirier vs. Colby Covington As The UFC 309 Co-Main Event Under Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic

Bisping and Catterall discussed the potential matchup between Poirier and Covington on the Michael Bisping Podcast YouTube channel recently. As soon as ‘The Count’ brought up the rumors, Catterall couldn’t hide his excitement.

“He’s [Colby Covington] got his opportunities. He’s not getting that opportunity again, anytime soon. He needs something big. He needs something juicy. He needs something to get himself up for it. Dustin Poirier is that name. A legend of the game. A guy that has been there, done it, got the T-shirt. You’ve just mentioned beef. Bit of bad blood. Dustin Poirier’s mates with Jorge Masvidal, he needs to get that one back for his pal, don’t he?”

The radio and TV presenter also highlighted that “The Diamond” is friends with Jorge Masvidal. The latter fought Covington in March 2022 after their long-time friendship turned bitter. Masvidal and “Chaos” have even had physical altercations outside the UFC, and their rivalry is as personal as it gets.

So, fighting Covington is a great way for Poirier to avenge Masvidal’s loss. He’s admitted to not liking the former interim UFC welterweight champion as well, and Bisping is very excited to see this beef getting settled inside the Octagon.

It’s unlikely for both Poirier and Covington to get title shots in their divisions now. However, as two of the biggest stars in the UFC, their fight can easily generate all the hype in the world. Bisping credited Covington for being an excellent promoter who can easily capitalize on the real resentment with his opponent this time around.

“Listen, Colby, say what you want about him. The man’s a promotion machine. With all like the personal stuff that they can go to, They would blow that fight up, like crazy. I’d want to see it.”

If the rumors are true, Poirier vs. Covington will be scheduled for UFC 309, the card expected to feature Jones vs. Miocic as the main event. It is safe to assume that tons of fans will tune in to watch the fight regardless of when it happens, though.
