Jorge Masvidal will step in as a replacement for Claudio Silva, taking on Siyar Bahadurzada this July at UFC 201.

Masvidal (29-11) has fought 10 times for the UFC, going 6-4 overall. The former street fighter suffered a split decision loss to Lorenz Larkin recently.

Bahadurzada (22-6-1) is an even 2-2 over his Octagon career. The 32-year-old returned from a 27-month layoff due to injuries to defeat Brandon Thatch in his most recent fight.

UFC 201 takes place July 30 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, with Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title serving as the main event.

The no-gloves stipulation (which boxer Art Jimmerson partially managed to circumnavigate at UFC 1) had been requested by one of the event’s founders, Rorian Gracie, who wanted to see fighting in its purest form.

By UFC 6 in 1995 gloves had become optional for fighters though, and by UFC 14 in 1997 they were mandatory.

Even when wearing gloves became the norm though, some fighters were still willing to test themselves in bareknuckle combat, whether it was for fight promotions in packed arenas, or just out on the street in front of a few dozen onlookers baying for blood.

Among them were some of the most famous fighters in the sport, battle hardened warriors who would move on from those barbaric beginnings to fight at the highest level in the UFC, and in some cases still do even to this day.

Leading up to his highly-anticipated bout, Masvidal spoke up on the use of performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs) in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), claiming that a plethora of steroid users were seriously affected by the UFC signing on with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA):

“This is gonna hurt a lot of people’s feelings, but I like to say the truth, so let the truth be told,” said Masvidal in a recent appearance on The Three Amigos podcast (transcribed by Bloody Elbow). “I don’t do steroids. I didn’t do steroids when I was first in this sport, and I don’t do them now. That’s a big reason why I’m still getting better. A lot of these guys that were on the steroids and the PEDs…when USADA came in, these guys were running out the door trying to dodge the test. That wasn’t me.”

Not only does Masvidal insist that he’s never taken PEDs, but he had a rather strange opinion on those who have taken PEDs and are now attempting to ween off of them, comparing them to ‘women that gave birth’:

“A lot of these motherf*ckers can’t do those things that were getting them over the top and getting them the big paychecks and all these endorsements from supplement companies anymore,” added Masvidal. “Now you look at their bodies, they look like women that gave birth, you know? These dudes are supposed to be pro athletes, and you look at them now when they compete, and you’re like, “What the f*ck happened to so-and-so?” You look back at them six months ago, before USADA came in the building, this dude looked like a juggernaut. Now he don’t. I’m so thankful I never messed with that stuff.”

In closing, Masvidal praised the new and improved stricter drug testing, saying that fighters who felt invincible are no longer on top without the use of PEDs:

“I’ve had injuries in the past, but it hasn’t been those crazy-ass injuries that you hear about because people were juiced out of their minds doing things that they’re not supposed to,” said Masvidal. “A lot of those dudes that were in PRIDE, over there in Japan doing that craziness, when they came over here, you didn’t see them shining like that anymore, because it was somewhat regulated over here. They would test here and there, but now with USADA, everything changed. Motherf*ckers that thought that they were invincible, they’re finding out real quick that they’re far from it.”

Benson Henderson vs. Eddie Alvarez Booked as Co-Main Event for UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs. Siver

As first reported by the Boston Herald, a lightweight bout between former UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson and former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez has been booked as the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs. Siver, January 18th at the TD Garden in Boston. And before you start complaining about how Bendo and Eddie shouldn’t be playing second bananas to a loud-mouthed Oirishmin, may I remind you that no other UFC fighter can pull off an ivory suit quite like this.

Henderson and Alvarez will both be looking to bounce back from recent defeats. Henderson is coming off his first-round knockout loss to Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 49 in August, while Alvarez was out-pointed by Donald Cerrone in his Octagon debut at UFC 178.

– Jorge Masvidal vs. Norman Parke. Masvidal has won three straight in the lightweight division, most recently taking a decision over James Krause at UFC 178. Parke — the TUF Smashes winner who’s still undefeated in the UFC — was supposed to face Diego Sanchez next month at UFC 180 but had to withdraw due to a knee injury.

– Uriah Hall vs. Costas Philippou. This is actually a rematch for the two middleweights, who previously met at Ring of Combat 34 back in February 2011, with Philippou earning a majority decision. Hall has won back to back fights against Chris Leben and Thiago Santos, while Philippou is coming off a knockout win against Lorenz Larkin.

Donald Cerrone vs. Bobby Green Booked for UFC 178 Co-Main Event

In an attempt to add a little more sizzle to the deflated UFC 178 lineup, a lightweight match between perennial crowd-pleaser Donald Cerrone and streaking contender Bobby Green has been booked as the new co-main event for the September 27th “Johnson vs. Cariaso” pay-per-view. UFC officials confirmed the match last night.

Cerrone, who was rumored to fight Eddie Alvarez at the event after being momentarily booked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov, has finished his last four opponents in the Octagon — earning $50,000 performance bonuses for each victory. “Cowboy” most recently knocked out Jim Miller in a wild two-rounder at UFC Fight Night 45 last month.

Green is a perfect 4-0 in the UFC since transferring from Strikeforce, and is riding an eight-fight win streak overall. The “hood” practitioner is coming off a split-decision victory against Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 12, a fight we’ll mostly remember for how talkative he was.

Bobby Green was originally booked to face twitter-rival Jorge Masvidal at UFC 178, but in light of the new arrangement, Masvidal will face off against James Krause. I know, this is all getting confusing, so we’ve put the current UFC 178 lineup after the jump. It’s still pretty stacked, actually, even though the main event is only like the sixth-most interesting fight on the card.
