There is no doubting that the reason many people will tune in Saturday night to UFC 205 is to see if Conor McGregor can make history.

But, a bout down the main card lineup and playing second-fiddle – heck, maybe more like fifth-fiddle on this night – is a welterweight affair between top contenders Donald Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum.

Maybe it’s just because I will never miss a “Cowboy” fight that I am so intrigued by this match up, but hear me out on my reasons before voting against.

Cerrone has been involved in some of the most interesting battles in the lower weight classes in recent years. His finishes of Jim Miller, Edson Barboza and Adriano Martins are on the highlight reel for his career, while he also holds wins over current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and former titleholder Benson Henderson.

Sure, Cerrone failed to net himself UFC gold when he was finished by Rafael dos Anjos last year, but it remains the only loss on his resume since 2013 – which also was to dos Anjos. In fact, outside of facing RDA, he is 12-0 in his last dozen fights.

Cerrone has earned a total of 13 “fight night” bonuses with the UFC to go along with five captured while competing in the WEC. His 18 bonuses stand as a Zuffa record, and eight of those are “Fight of the Night” winners.

Plain and simply put, he comes to fight.

His opponent, now, is a different beast.

Gastelum, who turned 25 years old last month, is part of a new-age of MMA fighter. He is a strong wrestler, has ever-improving striking and can also submit you from different angles. While Cerrone has met some of the best out there at welterweight, the former Ultimate Fighter winner stands as his toughest test in the 170-pound division to date.

Last July, Gastelum topped former division champion Johny Hendricks. His only two losses were both split decisions to Neil Magny and current UFC titleholder Tyron Woodley. He has stopped Nate Marquardt with strikes, submitted Jake Ellenberger and bested Rick Story.

So, while there is no reason to not be pumped about McGregor-Alvarez, Woodley-Stephen Thompson, the UFC strawweight title fight and Chris Weidman-Yoel Romero, at the end of the night, Cerrone-Gastelum might just tell us who the next welterweight contender is and walk away with a bonus or two.

UFC 205 Picks: Can Donald Cerrone Cement Himself As A Weltwerweight Contender If He Beats Kelvin Gastelum?

It’s finally here. UFC 205 is an event that will forever change the complexion of mixed martial arts as the biggest MMA promotion in the world has it’s first major event in the state of New York. Throughout the week there will be plenty of topics to talk about, but you know I’ll be salivating at the chance to breakdown the event fight by fight. Each match would be a potential main event attraction on any other card, which means there’s going to be high level bouts throughout the night. First up for analysis: the welterweight match between Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum and perennial contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Kelvin Gastelum was a scrappy wrestler when he first entered the UFC ranks. These days we’ve seen the young contender turn from wrestler with decent striking to a much more well rounded fighter. His last outing against former champion Johny Hendricks shows just how far Gastelum has come. He was able to use great movement coupled with with leg kicks and a sharp jab cross combination to obtain victory. While he may not be a better striker than Donald Cerrone, Gastelum is more than comfortable on his feet and also has the great equalizer: wrestling. If Gastelum wants to throw Cerrone off of his game he’ll have to engage in an extended battle on the feet, get his opponent comfortable, then shoot for single legs, preferably after throwing his left cross. He’ll have to be careful about telegraphing these strikes as Cerrone has a dangerous counter knee that will be awaiting him every time he chooses to close the gap.

Speaking of Cowboy, Donald Cerrone has become a wrecking machine at welterweight. Without having to worry about a crazy weight cut, Cerrone instead can focus on his technique to confound opponents on the feet. He has also developed a strong wrestling game of his own and uses it to throw usually superior wrestlers off their game. Cowboy should continue the trend in this fight against Gastelum in order to confuse his less experienced opponent. Cowboy has such fearsome striking that throwing anything different at his opponent will always catch them off guard. When the fight does remain on the feet, Cowboy should have two plans of attack. In the beginning he should avoid rushing in and trying to start too fast as Gastelum is likely to have the power advantage and is most certainly looking to come forward. Cowboy should play counter fighter on the outside for the first couple of minutes of the bout then steadily increase his output once he understands Gastelum’s timing and strategy. Gastelum does fall prey to a lack of creativity at times so Cowboy can use that to his advantage by grasping the TUF winner’s rhythm and then thoroughly breaking that rhythm throughout the fight.

This is a closely contested bout with plenty on the line. It’s a coin flip, one that can easily see either man coming out on top. But my gut is telling me that Donald Cerrone picks up another win by finding Gastelum’s timing and picking him apart over the course of three rounds. The pick is Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone by decision.

UFC 205 is not just historic because it marks the UFC’s first event in New York City. The show’s trio of title fights, litany of stars and overwhelming collection of talent have UFC 205 set up to be the promotion’s most memorable show since UFC 100.

Contributing to the prestige of the card is a showdown between high-action welterweights Donald Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum

Cerrone joined the welterweight ranks after his lightweight title run ended with a disappointing defeat to then-champion Rafael dos Anjos. Since changing weight classes, Cerrone has looked dominant, reeling off three straight wins, including a submission and a pair of knockouts.

Gastelum has rotated wins and losses over his past four outings but enters the bout on the heels of a big victory over former champion Johny Hendricks. A win against Cerrone would place Gastelum squarely in the title picture at 170 pounds.

In anticipation of UFC 205, Bleacher Report investigates the matchup, examining which fighter holds an advantage in which theater of combat, and which fighter is more likely to win.

The king of short notice/quick turnaround fights wants Demian Maia in December…

UFC lightweight/welterweight top 10 Donald Cerrone is set to face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 205. After a 10-year career fighting solely in the lightweight division, ‘Cowboy’ decided to move up at the start of 2016. Following a crushing loss to Rafael dos Anjos in his late 2015 title effort, Cerrone made his welterweight debut against Alex Oliveira in February. Looking like a new man, the fan-pleasing Cerrone was back, and he steam rolled Oliveira in one round.

Next facing Patrick Côté at UFC Ottawa, ‘Cowboy’ displayed crisp striking en route to a TKO win in front of ‘The Predator’s’ home fans. Moving on to his third fight in 2016, the Greg Jackson’s representative finished Rick Story with a highlight reel combo at UFC 202. Now ready to take on ‘Mini Cain’ at the historic UFC 205 card in New York next weekend (Nov. 12), Cerrone reveals he wants to fit in at least one more fight before year’s end.

Cerrone Wants Demian Maia

As quoted by MMAMania, exciting UFC contender Donald Cerrone says he wants a bout with Demian Maia at UFC 207:

“What I really want to do (after UFC 205), which I think makes the most sense right now is Demian Maia,” said Cerrone during a UFC 205 media scrum earlier this week (captured by MMA Fighting). “Let’s see if Demian will be ready to fight on December 30th. He’s up there kicking ass, so that’s what I want to fight.”

“He’s probably the guy to fight next for the title, right?” added Cerrone. “He’s crushing everybody. A lot of those people get scared of people when they’re good. I like it. So, bring that sh-t on.”

Dangerous

Typically of Cerrone, he appears to be calling out the most dangerous man outside the champion who is currently available. Although he has the challenge of Gastelum yet to come, would a fight against Demian Maia make sense? One thing is for sure, if ‘Cowboy’ can beat ‘Mini Cain’ and then Maia at UFC 207, there’s no denying him a shot at the belt at 170 pounds.

Finally, several bouts have been made official for November 12’s UFC 205 pay-per-view event from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.

Featherweight champion Conor McGregor just won’t be among them unfortunately.

Speculation has recently predicted a Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez main event for the lightweight title, but UFC President Dana White seemingly put the kibosh on those plans by saying top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov would get the next 155-pound title shot at the event.

White expanded upon that notion earlier tonight when Megan Olivi announced on ‘UFC Tonight’ that the president revealed McGregor was still rehabbing a foot injury from his five-round war with Nate Diaz at August 20’s UFC 202. That meant ‘The Notorious’ was unlikely to fight at the UFC’s first event from New York City. Alvarez vs. Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, was clarified by White as potentially headlining December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto. Both fighters have been sent new bout agreements for the title tilt.

The five bouts that were officially announced were Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens, Kelvin Gastelum vs. Donald Cerrone, Tim Kennedy vs. Rashad Evans, Tim Boestch vs. Rafael Natal, and Liz Carmouche vs. Katlyn Chookagian. Hailing from nearby Toms River, New Jersey, Edgar will look to rebound from a loss to longtime former champion Aldo for the interim featherweight belt in at July’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley also guaranteed as ‘UFC Tonight’ co-host that he would be facing Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson at the card, a fight that he announced last Friday but is only being held up by a technicality in the contract according to ‘The Chosen One.’

The full card will be announced at a press conference from Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, three days before tickets for the historic card go on sale.
