Long hailed as the next great champion of the storied UFC lightweight division, undefeated Dagestani grappler Khabib Nurmagomedov (25-0) emboldened those beliefs in a huge way by demolishing formerly surging striker Edson Barboza in the co-main event of December 30’s UFC 219.

The only reason any semblance of doubt arose about “The Eagle’s” ascendance stemmed from his long and concerning history of injuries and weight-cutting issues, issues that have limited him to four fights in just under four years while his performance remains nothing less than stellar inside the Octagon when he does compete.

Thankfully, he’s now back at full health and showing why he’s perceived as the next champion. His three-round domination of Barboza ranked as one of the most one-sided bouts of 2017 as he racked up lopsided scores across the board with another brutal showing of ground mastery. The win has him on the precipice of fighting longtime rival Tony Ferguson for the interim belt while Conor McGregor sits back and decides what to do with the actual title next.

But no matter what McGregor decides to do, octagon color commentator Joe Rogan revealed why he believes Khabib is the most fearsome force at 155 pounds on a recent edition of The JRE MMA Show (via MMA Junkie). To him, the Dagestani’s dominance became evident by Barboza’s distant look while he had no way to deal with the mounting beatdown:

“He’s just on such another level that the odds of beating him drop significantly after the first minute-and-a-half,” Rogan said. “You saw the look on Barboza’s face: Two minutes in and he’s trying to get up. You saw the look on his face and it’s like, ‘(Expletive), how am I going to do deal with this?’ It’s just so next level.

“Khabib, after this performance, has set it up to a place where he’s the most terrifying lightweight contender in the world,” Rogan said.

Rogan also praised Ferguson while acknowledging the mess the UFC has at lightweight thanks to the uncertainty of McGregor’s return. With chaos abound in one of their most talented and potentially lucrative divisions, Rogan believes the UFC will soon get to work on fixing it:

“Then you have Tony Ferguson, who’s a (expletive), and has the interim championship, then you have Conor – who knows what happens with him? I think the UFC’s going to give him some time, let the holidays pass, see what the (expletive) happens and then make some moves.”

UFC president Dana White recently said he was hoping to have McGregor, who reportedly wants some sort of ownership or promoter’s stake in his next bout, ready to fight by March, but then said he would book Ferguson vs. Khabib for the interim belt sometime during that month with the winner eventually facing McGregor.

If “The Notorious” isn’t planning on returning until August or September, however, White then confirmed they would make Ferguson vs. Khabib for the real belt with pressure mounting from fans everywhere for McGregor to defend his belt.

It seems the talented Irishman’s antics are growing old with even his most devoted fans, and after a down year for UFC pay-per-views in 2017, the world’s MMA leader could use nothing more than a high-grossing title fight that also lent some degree of clarity to the lightweight landscape.

With McGregor involved and holding the cards, don’t expect that to come easily.

Kevin Lee wants to be a different fighter in 2018 and is making big changes to do so.

After a disappointing loss in an interim lightweight title fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC 216, Lee has his sights set on a banner year and already has his next opponent in mind.

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM, Lee revealed some big changes he’s making to his fight game:

“I’m taking some time, I’m changing up my whole style. I’m changing up my team around me. You know, there have been a lot of things happening, especially at the end of this last year, unfortunately, that I’ve had to make changes (for). But it’s a new me, it’s a new start, when I come back the folks are going to see a new me.”

Lee then mentioned Gaethje as a possible dance partner, who himself is coming off of a deflating knockout loss to Eddie Alvarez, which happens to be the first loss of Gaethje’s career.

But with both men still hovering around the top five and top ten of the division, a win for either man would certainly put them back into title contention. For Lee, he see’s the matchup as more than favorable:

“I mean, absolutely. I think the best thing about 155 is that there are so many options. The division is right open now. I don’t know, we’ll see. If it’s going to be against Justin, I like easy money. Justin likes to take a lot of damage. I like to give a lot of damage – it seems like a good match to me.”

But overall, Lee isn’t sure Gaethje should get right back in the cage against him due to the damage he’s sustained in his last two UFC bout against Eddie Alvarez and Michael Johnson:

“I’m trying to look out for Justin’s health, too. He needs some time, too. The man has taken a lot of bad beatings over the last couple of months. I don’t think he wants another one right here, right now.“

Would you like to see Lee and Gaethje duke it out? Who would win a battle between them?

UFC Rankings Update: McGregor Somehow Rises On P4P List

Two of the UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighters picked up pivotal wins at last weekend’s (Sat., December 30, 2017) UFC 219 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg securing a decision win over Holly Holm and dominant lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov brutally pounding Edson Barboza in an at-times hard-to-watch co-main event.

For those efforts, Cyborg and Khabib deservedly earned a rise up the official pound-for-pound rankings, with Cyborg moving up one spot to No. 9 and Khabib finally debuting at No. 14. That’s to be expected; however, perhaps the most shocking rise up the pound-for-pound list was made by Conor McGregor, who somehow surpassed Georges St-Pierre to overtake the No. 2 spot despite not fighting for almost 14 months at this point.

St-Pierre’s drop was most likely precipitated by his recent vacating of the middleweight title hardly one month after he won at UFC 217 on November 4, yet he has fought for a UFC title much more recently than McGregor. By comparison, No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Demetrious Johnson recently topped Anderson Silva for the record for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history with 11; McGregor has none.

There’s no doubting “The Notorious’” electric drawing power and scintillating knockout ability, but his UFC return is currently unknown – and perhaps even unlikely – after he reportedly earned $100 million to box Floyd Mayweather last August. He’s been rumored to finally defend the lightweight belt against interim champion Tony Ferguson, but those are only rumors.

His status as by far the biggest star in MMA is obviously keeping him near the top of the media-generated rankings, however, and that’s unlikely to stop until he finally returns and loses a fight – if he ever does.

Fresh off of his viscerally satisfying three-round destruction of top-ranked striking machine Edson Barboza in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., December 30, 2017) from Las Vegas, Khabib Nurmagomedov isn’t messing around making his next intention known.

Perhaps looking to make up for lost time due to the streak of injuries that held him to three fights in three-and-a-half years, ‘The Eagle’ told reporters at the post-fight press conference that he was sick of the top lightweights – namely champion Conor McGregor and interim champion Tony Ferguson – talking about him while he was hurt and avoiding him when he was actually healthy like he clearly is now:

“When I’m injured, these guys talk. When I’m here, where are they?”

The 25-0 grappling sensation has obviously appeared to be nothing short of utterly dominant in his UFC tenure, so much so that it’s become apparent the only things that seem able to beat him are his own medical problems.

He’s now past those, at least for now, and he revealed he’s planning on fighting three times next year. With that goal known, Khabib said he would fight both McGregor and Ferguson on the same night if they allowed it:

“If UFC approves, I’ll fight both Conor and Tony in the same night. Why not? I swear, this is no joke.”

The nonstop Dagestani wrestler has been scheduled to fight Ferguson several times before, with injuries to one fighter or another calling the bout off to the point it seems like it would never happen because it just wasn’t meant to. But that theory could easily be tested yet again because it’s unknown if or when McGregor will actually return to MMA and defend the title.

That could make Ferguson vs. Khabib the final step in earning a ticket to face McGregor, but with the outspoken Irishman on vacation enjoying his $100 million payday for boxing Floyd Mayweather, they – and every other UFC fighter – may never get that chance again.

Conor McGregor’s supposed MMA return remains one of the hottest topics in an MMA topic currently devoid of true pay-per-view-worthy stars.

Although many fight fans have seemed to grow at least somewhat tired of ‘The Notorious” outside-the-cage antics as he holds the coveted UFC lightweight title hostage, there’s also little question that those same fans would tune in to watch the biggest name in the UFC fight no matter whom it was against.

He’s been rumored to face off with interim champion Tony Ferguson, who is currently on the sidelines after getting elbow surgery, and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather recently hinted at a UFC return – even though he ultimately shot it down – after beating McGregor in the boxing ring via 10th-round TKO this August.

With the MMA world awaiting any kind of news, recent interim title contender Kevin Lee revealed what he knew during a recent appearance on MMA Junkie Radio (quotes via MMA Mania), noting that he would most likely fight Ferguson but ‘something crazy’ could happen with Mayweather:

“Either that, or something crazy is going to happen there. But, at least I think everything that I’ve seen and all the little whispers that I’ve heard, he comes back, he fights Tony.”

If and when the anticipated title bout does go down, Lee doesn’t believe McGregor will be able to handle the experience of Ferguson after facing and losing to him at UFC 216. As for when “The Motown Phenom” said he’s heard the fight will happen this March:

“I don’t think he beats Tony. There ain’t no way. Tony’s going to be way too experienced, Tony’s going to be way too tough… He’s going to be too much for him. So I’m interested to see that fight. I wish they would just go ahead and make the damn fight happen already. I hear it’s supposed to go down in March, so we’ll see.”

There’s absolutely no doubt that a title unification bout between the two 155-pound champions would be one of the biggest fights the UFC could currently put on, and it would also go a long as to addressing McGregor’s lack of title defenses throughout his entire MMA career.

But McGregor has seemed to love the wealth of fighting rather than actually fighting since fighting Mayweather, so he may be wanting an even bigger potential payday than the Ferguson fight would provide, namely against Mayweather in MMA or perhaps Georges St-Pierre.

Either way, the UFC needs McGregor back, so the sooner, the better. Can they corral their unpredictable star back into the Octagon in early 2018?
