The UFC lightweight division had a new champion crowned in New York City, and it’s caused quite a fuss. As is usual with anything Conor McGregor does, his victory over Eddie Alvarez altered a wide landscape. First off, the future was very unclear at 155 and 145 pounds. Although the Irish star had committed to six months of leave, he also stated he’d be defending both belts in good time. Those plans got stripped away, as did his featherweight title, as the UFC made plans to save UFC 206 and also promote Jose Aldo.

Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway do battle for the junior belt, and so the focus is now on the lightweight division on McGregor’s return. For one top contender in Khabib Nurmagomedov, that day could not come soon enough, or at least it seemed that way for a while. The 24-0 animal from American Kickboxing Academy vowed to ‘torture’ McGregor for five rounds recently. ‘The Eagle’ and ‘The Notorious’ shared a heated backstage confrontation before UFC 205, and after both were victorious it looked like a fight was dead certain.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Not So Fast

Now that the trash talking Irishman is out of play for the moment, Khabib is setting his sights elsewhere. In an interview with RT, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, Nurmagomedov says he now wants to fight Tony Ferguson next:

“I feel very bad about this (McGregor taking a break) because before this year I have two years rest because I have injured all the time. Now I don’t want [to be] waiting for this guy. If Conor don’t want fight before May/June, I want to take other fight. I want to fight for the interim belt with Tony Ferguson.

“Last time he was injured. He pulled out, not me. He’s not coming to April 16 to the fight. Before I have been injured and now it’s, why not? Now, I think the UFC wants to make this fight. I feel this and for me its perfect date is March. Not early, only March.”

“Tony Ferguson is tough guy, tough opponent. Nine-win streak. Why not? I think this is real high level lightweight fight. Not Conor versus me I think this is real high level fight.”

History

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson have twice been due to dance, but injuries on both sides have hindered that match up. Now that both men are healthy, as are their impressive streaks, is a March interim title clash a no-brainer?

The UFC continues to dish out exciting fight announcements with the latest being a rumored lightweight tilt between surging contenders No. 3-ranked Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson and No. 9-ranked Michael “Maverick” Chiesa.

According to MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, the fight is being targeted as the main event for the UFC’s debut in South Dakota which is set for July 13, 2016.

Ferguson has been red hot as of late, winning seven-straight fights and finishing five of them. That stretch includes victories over Danny Castillo, Gelison Tibau, Josh Thomson, and most recently Edson Barboza last December.

“El Cucuy” was scheduled to clash with returning top contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov at last month’s UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida, but he was forced to withdraw after suffering a rare lung injury.

Chiesa, the winner of the 15th season of The Ultimate Fighter, has been rolling as of late as well. “Maverick” has won three consecutive bouts including back to back submission victories over the likes of Jim Miller and Beniel Dariush.

A bout between Ferguson and Chiesa has all the makings to produce fireworks given each fighter’s slick submission skills and strong finishing ability.

If confirmed, who do you see winning this one?

Finally, after two years on the sidelines due to injury, top lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov made his highly anticipated return to action at last night’s (April 16, 2016) UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida.

Despite the layoff, the undefeated Dagestani wrestler quickly returned to form, scoring a dominant finish over UFC newcomer Darrel Horcher.

Horcher, however, accepted the bout on just over a week’s notice after Nurmagomedov’s original opponent, Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson, pulled out of the bout with an injury.

Taking to his official Instagram account after the fight last night, Ferguson gave his opinion on “The Eagle”, not giving him too much credit:

Ferguson, a man currently ranked No. 4 in the 155 pound weight class, has won seven straight fights including five by way of finish. Many were intrigued by a potential scrap between he and Nurmagomedov, and although he’s clearly still lobbying for his shot, it appears as if “The Eagle” is gearing up to face the winner of July’s title fight between champion Rafael dos Anjos and Eddie Alvarez.

After all, Nurmagomedov is the last man to beat dos Anjos back in 2014.

With that being said, who would you like to see Ferguson meet if “The Eagle” is not an option?

Well, well, well.

Oh how the tables have turned.

Injury ridden lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov has spent the last two years on the sidelines since scoring a victory over current divisional kingpin Rafael dos Anjos.

The undefeated Dagestani wrestler was scheduled to make his return later this month (April 16, 2016) against Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson in the main event of UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida.

Ferguson has been riding a hot wave as of late, and had previously warned Nurmagomedov to stay healthy and show up on fight night.

Now, however, “El Cucuy” has been forced off of the card due to an injury per FOX Sports.

This news has forced the UFC to bump the originally scheduled co-main event between former title challenger Glover Teixeira and former champion “Suga” Rashad Evans to main event status.

With such little time to find a replacement for Ferguson, “The Eagle” will not compete on the card, but will instead be given a new bout for a later date.

Teixeira, a Brazilian slugger, has picked up back to back stoppage victories over the likes of Ovince St. Preux and Patrick Cummins after suffering consecutive defeats to Jon Jones and Phil Davis.

Evans, on the other hand, recently returned from quite a lengthy injury layoff, dropping an extremely disappointing decision to Ryan Bader at October 2015’s UFC 192. He will look to get back on track against Teixeira in just a few weeks time.

19-year-old phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has received a huge backing from the UFC since his debut just a few months back at UFC 192 in October, with the promotion obviously sensing a massive amount of potential in him.

After running through Francisco Trevino in just 57 seconds, Northcutt scored a second round submission over Cody Pfister at December 10’s UFC Fight Night 80 from Las Vegas.

After scoring two straight victories, “Super” Sage was ready for his third bout last night (January 30, 2016), as he took on late replacement Bryan Barberena on the main card of UFC on FOX 18.

Northcutt finally hit a road block, however, suffering a second round submission loss. In the aftermath of the setback, the Texas native has received quite a bit of criticism, even from some fellow fighters.

Surging lightweight contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson took to his official twitter account to take a shot at a downed Northcutt:

While some took the chance to pepper “Super” Sage, others were there to defend him, specifically No. 2-ranked 155 pounder Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, who just so happens to be scheduled to meet Ferguson at April’s UFC on FOX 19.

Nurmagomedov fired back at “El Cucuy”, calling him a “jealous bum”:

In the end, Ferguson would drop one more insult towards “The Eagle” and his notorious injury issues:

While Northcutt obviously has some holes to fill, he still has a long future ahead of him in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Do you see the young star bouncing back from the loss?

The UFC has continued to stack the deck for UFC on FOX 19, which is slated for April 16, 2016 from Tampa, Florida.

In just the last few days, reports have indicated that bouts between “Suga” Rashad Evans and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, and Michael Chiesa and Beneil Dariush have all been added to the card.

That doesn’t appear to be all, however, as MMAFighting’s Luke Thomas has indicated that No. 6-ranked featherweight Cub Swanson will make his return in April to take on No. 10-ranked Hacran Diaz.

Swanson has been nursing an injury on the sidelines since his latest fight, a brutal stoppage loss at the hands of Max Holloway at last April’s UFC on FOX 15. Prior to that, Swanson had won six of seven with the only loss in that stretch coming to top contender and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

Diaz has compiled two straight wins of his own, scoring a unanimous decision victory over Darren Elkins at UFC Fight Night 58 in December 2014, and a split decision win over Levan Makashvili at UFC Fight Night 70 last June.

This will be a pivotal bout for each man, as the winner will loft himself back into the crowded mix of featherweight contenders longing for a chance at divisional kingpin and promotional cash cow Conor McGregor.

Which of these recently announced bouts intrigues you the most?
