Professional wrestling legend Kurt Angle, like many around the world this weekend, tuned in to the UFC 264 trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. The main event ended in an unusual fashion after McGregor shattered his left leg and had to be carted off from the octagon on a stretcher.
Regardless of McGregor’s freak injury, Angle doesn’t put much stock in it and thinks the moment was a little overrated; saying that he’s suffered the same injury on multiple occasions over the course of his career and life.
“So…. [Conor McGregor] broke his freakin’ ankle this past weekend. Big deal,” Angle tweeted. “I break my ankle all of the time. I broke my ankle this morning and I’m jumping around right now!! I even won a gold medal with a broken freakin’ neck too.”
Angle earned an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling back at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta before enjoying a long-tenured career in professional wrestling. He is mostly known for his time in WWE/WWF from 1998-2006, before wrestling for other promotions and then returning to WWE back in 2017.
McGregor successfully underwent surgery on a fractured lower tibia directly following UFC 264 at a Las Vegas hospital and is expected to be sidelined for at least the next six weeks. Poirier will be the next title challenger to UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira’s belt later this year.
McGregor suffered the injury in the closing seconds of the opening round in his fight with Poirier, after getting hit by an elbow that countered a left high kick. His leg gruesomely collapsed from underneath him and the fight was called due to a doctor’s stoppage, giving Poirier the win.
McGregor faces a six-month medical suspension from the UFC for his injury and surgery. If there will be another fight between McGregor and Poirier, it sounds like it won’t happen again until 2022.
What was your reaction to McGregor’s gruesome leg injury at UFC 264?

Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey is now officially a part of the WWE’s roster and was baptized in classic professional wrestling fashion after Stephanie McMahon slammed her through a table on Monday.
But that wasn’t even the worst part of her appearance on RAW, as McMahon did the unthinkable by bringing up Rousey’s devastating knockout losses that led her to retire from the sport altogether. Rousey is notoriously prickly when it comes to discussing those losses in interviews, but that didn’t stop Vince McMahon’s daughter from “going there” – and didn’t stop Rousey from letting her for money.
Watch the exchange for yourself:
McMahon insisted Rousey’s first loss in pro-wrestling would come in her very first match, poking fun at how the ‘world knows she handles losses’:
“Ronda, just remember that you chose this path. This is all on you. You are going to lose at WrestleMania. In the record books, your very first match in WWE is going to be a loss to me.
“And we all know — The world knows how you handle losses.”
Rousey will make her official WWE debut at Wrestlemania 34 on Sunday in a tag team match with partner and fellow Olympic medalist Kurt Angle against Stephanie McMahon and her real-life husband, Paul “Triple H” Levesque.
Former Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle appeared as a guest on the latest edition of Ric Flair’s latest podcast and during his interview, he revealed what he thinks UFC star Conor McGregor has been up to since he first stepped into the UFC limelight.
Angle started out talking about how technically proficient “The Notorious” one is both in terms of his fighting skills, and his brash personality. As Angle explains, he feels McGregor simply took the pro wrestling playbook and utilized it within the MMA realm.
“Conor McGregor is an incredible athlete and a wonderful fighter,” Angle told WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair during the show. “I watched him and he’s so polished. I believe that Conor has taken the wrestling playbook and utilized it in UFC. In other words, he loves being a heel and he does it very well.”
Angle continued, “I think he just did it because it makes his character even more hateful. I think that Conor is doing this strictly for the money. The more he can stir people up, the more popular he becomes.”
As Angle elaborated, he shared his belief that McGregor has had it in his mind all along to “crossover” to the pro wrestling world. He even went as far as to predict this could be happening soon, as Angle said he doesn’t believe the Irish mega-star will be fighting much longer.
“I also think he wants to crossover,” said Angle. “I think he wants to go to WWE and this is a good opening, a good avenue for him. I don’t think Conor McGregor is going to fight much longer.”
