Conor McGregor Addresses Hand Injury Concerns

Some people were concerned with an apparent hand injury Conor McGregor was sporting recently.

Conor McGregor is back.

“The Notorious” will headline this weekend’s (Sat. October 6, 2018) UFC 229 pay-per-view (PPV). McGregor is challenging Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight championship. He returned to the mixed martial arts (MMA) spotlight over a week ago at a UFC 229 press conference.

While McGregor’s outlandish statements and witty antics stole the show, something else caught fans’ eyes. McGregor was sporting an apparent injury on his finger. “Mystic Mac” addressed this in an interview on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” recently.

McGregor revealed that the mark on his finger was the result of a freak sparring accident. The Irishman hit his sparring partner with a clean, hard shot which resulted in his opponent’s tooth becoming embedded in his hand (via Bloody Elbow):

“Only the strong survive around this game. I was fighting a 90-kilo fighter, Ion Pascu, he’s a great solid fighter. They call him the bomber. Like me, I sometimes spar without a gum shield. I was sparring this guy, The Bomber, and I smacked him with a clean shot, and his tooth embedded into me.”

“A man’s tooth was embedded into my knuckle. Welcome to the fight game. The real fight game. Not that tip-tap sh-t you see so much of. You’ve got to get in and do it. You’re either going to do it or you’re not going to do it. Make a decision. It is what it is.”

It doesn’t sound like that injury will hinder McGregor’s performance this weekend. He is still prepared to make the walk to the Octagon in hopes of handing “The Eagle” the first loss of his MMA career. McGregor also hopes to reclaim the lightweight title he never lost.

Conor McGregor recently expressed interest in fighting UFC legend Anderson Silva. It’s time Silva reacts to that callout.

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion will face Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of this weekend’s (October 6, 2018) UFC 229 from Las Vegas. But as always, he’s continuously looking forward to the biggest and best options for his career.

Silva is apparently on his short list of prospective opponents moving forward. The longtime former middleweight champion was recently exonerated by USADA. Because his name has been cleared, he can return to action this month. Silva does not yet have a fight booked.

When he does return, however, he’s apparently onboard with a potentially massive super fight with McGregor. The all-time great just posted on his official Instagram account that it would ‘be an honor’ to face McGregor. Silva also appears to know the current climate of the fight game. He’s seen the focus on super fights.

‘The Spider’s’ Response

Check out his response to McGregor (translated from Portuguese by MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz):

“It would be an honor to test myself with Conor McGregor. He’s an unorthodox fighter and has proven he must be respected. Let’s make it happen.

“The UFC wants superfights, I’m sure fans from all over the world want to see this fight. Professionally, I believe it would be incredible to test my martial arts abilities with a fighter like Conor McGregor in a true superfight. He’s focused on fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov now, after this fight I’m ready for this challenge. When and where he wants.”

The 43-year-old Silva has been out of action since February 2017. He was set to face Kelvin Gastelum last fall but was removed due to his USADA issues. ‘The Spider’ is considered one of the greatest mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters of all-time.

He set a record for the most consecutive wins in the UFC with a 16-fight streak from 2006-2013 and will go down in history because of it. But Silva is far out of his prime. He’s also never fought at less than 185 pounds in the UFC. Silva did fight at welterweight before his UFC career.

That’s the highest division McGregor has competed at. It’s unlikely Silva would be able to cut down to 170 due to his advancing age. But stranger things have happened, and even though Silva is aging quickly, this fight would still be like printing money.

Is it one you want to see after UFC 229?

It’s fight week, and that means Conor McGregor boasts about his latest monster payday.

McGregor will make his awaited MMA return against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of this weekend’s October 6, 2018) UFC 229 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When he does, he’s claiming a record-setting payday for the sport of mixed martial arts. McGregor revealed on this week’s episode of “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” that his purse would set a record for the most ever made in MMA. He said the deal wasn’t quite on par with his haul to box Floyd Mayweather, but it was getting here:

“The deal I’m on now, it’s breathtaking what we have achieved,. It’s a tasty, tasty, record-breaking deal. It’s give or take [nine figures]. The Mayweather [fight] was nine figures but we’re almost there. It’s a good, solid eight figures, halfway there. We’re very happy with the deal.”

The Irish crossover star made a disclosed $30 million to box Mayweather in August 2017. He lost the bout by 10th-round TKO but made himself MMA’s richest fighter as a result. McGregor is rumored to have ultimately earned between $85-100 million when all pay-per-view figures were taken into account.

It’s come at a price to his MMA domination, however. McGregor will have been out of action for almost two years when he steps into the Octagon to face Khabib this weekend. He’ll also be facing arguably his toughest test in the undefeated “Eagle.”

All that means McGregor will most certainly bank his biggest MMA payday of all-time, yet it could come for his biggest beating as well.

Will he buck the odds like he has so many times before?
