Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is still hoping to receive a shot at the title upon his return from injury, but he isn’t too confident that he’ll be granted his wish. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title earlier this month at UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout, leading Michael Bisping to step up on short notice and knock out Rockhold to become the champion.

Weidman, a Long Island native, has called out Bisping multiple times for a fight at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 which will mark the UFC’s inaugural trip to New York at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Bisping, however, has seemed more interested in getting revenge on No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, or perhaps facing off with returning former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At this point, Weidman isn’t going to ‘cry’ about it, but he did confirm that he will be willing to fight anyone as he long as he gets his spot on the MSG card:

“I’ll be at Madison Square Garden waiting for whoever wants it. Bisping doesn’t want it. You know, it was my title shot and he had the opportunity because of me. Now he’s trying to fight the thirteenth ranked guy in the division. It’s good for him. Good for him, man. Fight anybody you want. He’s trying to get a ‘W’ under his belt. Hey, if he can make it happen, good for him. I’m not going to cry about it, honestly.” Weidman told MMAJunkie.

If Weidman isn’t given a shot at Bisping, who would you like to see him face off with in New York? Perhaps a rematch with Rockhold would make sense, although divisional supremacy wouldn’t be on the line this time. Fellow top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza could also present a formidable challenge for Weidman, and the Brazilian should be returning from injury around the November time frame.

Despite the chaos currently inhabiting the UFC’s featherweight division, the promotion has added an intriguing 145-pound scrap to June 4’s UFC 199 from the L.A. Forum in Inglewood, California.

Per UFC Tonight, No. 4-ranked Max “Blessed” Holloway will clash with former title challenger and No. 5-ranked Ricardo “The Bully” Lamas.

Since dropping a decision loss to reigning champion Conor McGregor in 2013, 24 year old Holloway has gone on a tear, winning eight straight bouts with six of those victories coming by way of finish.

That streak includes an impressive finish over former top contender Cub Swanson, and most recently a decision victory over Jeremy Stephens at last December’s UFC 194.

Lamas, on the other hand, received a shot at former champion Jose Aldo back in 2014, losing a rather lack luster decision. Since then, however, “The Bully” has won three of four, most recently taking a unanimous decision over veteran Diego Sanchez last November.

It was also confirmed that a previously targeted middleweight showdown between legend Dan “Hendo” Henderson and Hector Lombard will take place on the card.

Henderson was scheduled to rematch Lyoto Machida last weekend at UFC on FOX 19, but “The Dragon” was scrapped from the bout after it was revealed that he had consumed a banned substance.

Lombard will be making his return to 185 pounds after recently dropping a disappointing loss to Neil Magny.

UFC 199 is set to be headlined by a middleweight title rematch between defending champion Luke Rockhold and former divisional kingpin Chris Weidman.

Also on the card, Dominick Cruz will put his 135 pound strap on the line in a trilogy bout against bitter rival and former WEC champion Urijah Faber.

Luke Rockhold: Chris Weidman Pulled A ‘Bitch Move’ At UFC 194

Reigning UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold is undoubtedly one of the most well-rounded fighters on the roster, possessing a vast arsenal of striking attacks, as well as a lethal submission game.

Going into his UFC 194 (December 12, 2015) bout with then champion Chris Weidman, however, it was thought that the Long Island native held the clear advantage in the wrestling department.

Despite that edge, Rockhold prevailed, scoring a fourth round finish and taking the belt home with him to sunny California.

The American Kickboxing Academy product recently said that Weidman turning away from his wrestling was a ‘bitch move’, and it was at that moment that he knew he had the fight in the bag:

“It’s a bitch move,” Rockhold said at a noticabely tense media day Wednesday promoting their UFC 199 rematch. “I mean, the moment he jumped on my back, I knew I had him. The one area where he was supposed to be dominant was his wrestling. For him not to take me down, not to horse me around there, and play his wrestling. For him to jump on my back just felt weak.”

Continuing on, Rockhold said that he noticed a drop in the confidence of Weidman, which in turn only boosted his own self-belief:

“As a fighter, when some guy does that, the confidence isn’t there,” Rockhold said. “That’s how i felt, that’s how I engaged in the situation. I immediately relaxed and grew confidence from that moment.”

At the end of the day, however, Rockhold wasn’t worried by any aspect of Weidman’s game, including the decorated wrestling background of the ex-champion:

“I really knew I would control every aspect of the fight, I didn’t see him be able to do that [outwrestle him],” Rockhold said. “It’s a matter of how good I would be on top. I thought he’d be able to be tougher off the start. I know I’d find the holes and find the openings and expose them.”

Weidman Calls Rockhold Rematch ‘Bigger Than Anderson Silva’

Ex-middleweight champion Chris Weidman, a gritty wrestler from Long Island, New York, rose to prominence when he shockingly knocked out former legendary divisional kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva back at UFC 162 in 2013.

Weidman would then once again topple Silva at UFC 168 after “The Spider” suffered a gruesome leg injury, giving “The All-American” back to back milestone victories.

The New Yorker would secure two more title defenses over the likes of Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort before surrendering his strap to reigning champion Luke Rockhold at last December’s UFC 194.

Weidman will get his chance at redemption when he meets Rockhold in a rematch at the upcoming UFC 199 (June 4, 2016), and the former champion admits that this rematch lies bigger than his bouts with Silva:

“This is a do or die fight for me,” said Weidman. “I have to go out there and dominate him. This is my career on the line. This is bigger than my Anderson Silva fights.” Weidman said on a recent edition of Inside MMA.

The first fight saw the two men go back and forth for much of the opening minutes before an ill-advised spinning kick attempt by Weidman gave Rockhold the upper hand later in the bout.

The Serra-Longo product had also apparently come into the fight with a broken foot, also previously admitting that his mental state may not have been where it should have.

Now, however, the former boss feels as if he’s back to normal, and ready to recapture glory:

“I know where I was at for that last fight,” added Weidman. “I know my potential. I know where I was physically and mentally at and I know where I can be at.”

Will Weidman be able to fix his mistakes and come out on top in the rematch?

Chris Weidman Hell-Bent On Reclaiming Title With MMA Legalized In NY

Big news came earlier this week, as New York finally became the fiftieth state to legalize mixed martial arts (MMA).

A plethora of fighters were happy to hear of the legalization, but perhaps none more than former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, a Long Island native who has long pushed for the ability to fight  in his home state.

Currently scheduled to rematch 185-pound boss Luke Rockhold at June’s UFC 199, Weidman recently said that the legalization of the sport in NY has made him even more ‘excited’ to reclaim his title in hopes of one day defending it at the infamous Madison Square Garden:

“The vision gets even stronger now. I had to get my belt back, but now just the fact that I’m going to get to defend my belt in Madison Square Garden in front of all of New York is crazy to even start to think about,” Weidman said during a recent conference call. “It definitely gets me more excited.”

The promotion has been attempting to legalize MMA in the Empire State for years now, and “The All-American” claims that it’s now a dream come true not only for himself, but for the passionate legion of New York fans:

“Speaking for myself I’ve been fighting for seven years, and I’ve been missing out on opportunities to fight in front of my family, friends, fans here in New York. Every year you’re just hopeful and it finally happened, so it’s a dream come true for me,” he said. “It’s a dream come true for all these New York fans that don’t have to worry about buying these tickets to Las Vegas to watch New York fighters get in there or take long car rides to New Jersey.”

As far as what the reaction has been, Weidman admits that it’s been nothing but excitement regarding a move that was a long time coming:

Everyone is so excited. [Whether] guys were just doing MMA for fun or exercise or competing at the pro level, everyone is just so excited,” he said. “Living in New York having to explain to people who aren’t educated on the sport why it’s illegal is just something that you get kind of sick of doing all the time. Now that’s it’s a legit sport in New York and there’s no more explaining to do, it’s a huge relief for everybody.”

Do you foresee Weidman getting the better of Rockhold when the two meet for a second time?
