Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm is slated to meet No. 9-ranked Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of July 23’s UFC on FOX 20 from Chicago.

This will be Holm’s first performance since surrendering her title in a submission loss to Miesha Tate last March. “The Preacher’s Daughter” was hoping to receive an immediate rematch with Tate, but “Cupcake” will instead face off with Amanda Nunes at July 9’s UFC 200.

Many were surprised when Holm was booked against Shevchenko, and it appears as if she was actually offered another high profile fight: a catch weight bout with Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino.

Justino recently destroyed Leslie Smith at UFC 198 in her Octagon debut, but a bout between herself and Holm would’ve been massive.

Recently speaking on the matter, Holm admitted that she turned down the bout with “Cyborg” simply because she was hoping to land the rematch with Tate. The former champion also very clearly stated that she’d be willing to fight Justino at any weight:

“I’m not even stuck on the 135 compared to 140, that’s not really a big thing for me. They did call me for the fight, that is definitely true. I was so focused and I really wanted to see if I was going to get that rematch for the belt because that is where my passion was really facing. And that was around the time they asked me for the fight with Cyborg and I was holding out to see if I could get the rematch. To me, I am not against fighting Cyborg, it just didn’t really seem like the right time. In boxing, I fought in three weight classes, so I am not opposed to fighting at 140. I actually think Cyborg might make 135, who knows. But that could be an option for the future. I am actually very happy for her victory. I really like Cyborg, I think she’s a great gal.” Holm told 120 Sports.

Cris Cyborg Can ‘Absolutely’ Make Bantamweight – But There’s a Price

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino is a massive 145-pounder, and her weight has kept her out of the UFC for years given the fact that the promotion currently doesn’t have a featherweight division.

She has attempted to cut down to 135-pounds before, but has yet to compete at that weight.

With her UFC debut, which was an 81-second destruction of Leslie Smith in a 140-pound catch weight bout at UFC 198 (May 14, 2016), now in the rearview mirror, talks have unsurprisingly turned to whether or not the Brazilian slugger would ever really be able to make the bantamweight limit safely.

A plethora of fights would await her at 135-pounds including the long rumored super fight with ex-champion Ronda Rousey as well as a possible clash with current divisional title holder Miesha Tate.

Speaking on the topic, “Cyborg’s” nutritionist, George Lockhart, said that she could ‘absolutely’ make the cut down to bantamweight, although it would likely come at a price:

“Could she make the cut? Absolutely,” Lockhart explained on The Luke Thomas Show (Transcription via MMA Fighting). “She can make 135. She can make 130, but performing? That’s another question. That right there comes down to time. She put in a lot of time for this.”

“People don’t realize how hard it was just to get down to 139. She had to do three-a-days every single day of the week. Sundays she had a day off, but still. Three-a-days, it’s a lot. She’s running, doing a lot of road work.”

Lockhart may have a point here, as a draining weight cut could take away some of Justino’s advantages, specifically her brutal knockout power.

At the end of the day, however, the coach feels as if making bantamweight is possible, although he doesn’t know how realistic the move would be:

“If she ever said, ‘You know what? I want to come down to the 135.’ I think it’d be possible,” Lockhart said. “But is it definite? Honestly, I don’t know.”

What do you expect of “Cyborg’s” future in the UFC?

It’s been quite an eventful week for the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion in terms of breaking news, but the UFC has also been quite busy in booking fights for its upcoming spring and summer cards.

Clearly the biggest news came in the blockbuster formation of the quickly shaping-up-to-be epic UFC 200 from the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 9, 2016. The event got its rumored Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor main event, but another massive bout was added last night when news arrived that Jose Aldo would meet Frankie Edgar for the interim title belt on the card.

Today, after UFC president Dana White teased a big fight for women’s bantamweight champ Miesha Tate, we found out that former title contender (and Tate beater) Cat Zingano will potentially meet the champion’s good friend Julianna Pena at the developing super card. After Zingano recently teased an ‘epic’ summer return, this could be the top-ranked opponent she’s looking for.

Going with that theme, ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt was also slated for a return against debuting Enrique Marin.

Johny Hendricks..

Former welterweight champion Johny “Big Rigg” Hendricks will also return. He finds himself fighting former The Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum. Hendricks will look to bounce back after suffering a disappointing defeat to Stephen Thompson last February.

A highly intriguing clash between veteran warriors Diego Sanchez and Joe Lauzon was also added to action-packed schedule. If this bout doesn’t just scream blood and excitement, I’m not quite sure what does.

Also this week was the confirmation that Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino would finally be making her Octagon debut against Leslie Smith at May 14’s UFC 198 from Brazil.

Sticking with the females, it was also reported that former 115-pound title holder Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza would be making her return to action to replace Jessica Aguilar on short notice against Julianna Lima at April 23’s UFC 197 in Las Vegas.

Esparza has been sidelined since suffering a one-sided loss to reigning champion Joanna Jedrzeczyk at UFC 185 last March while Lima has won two straight.

Boosting an already packed card at May 29’s UFC Fight Night 88 from Las Vegas, a top bantamweight bout No. 4 Aljamain Sterling and No. 8 Bryan Caraway joined the Thomas Almeida vs. Cody Garbrandt main event at 135.

Following UFC 197 and UFC 198 will be June 4’s UFC 199 from The Forum in Inglewood, California. The promotion recently added a welterweight bout between Tom Breese and Sean Strickland to this card.

Piggy-backing off of these announcements, the UFC went to town on June 18’s UFC Fight Night 89 from Ottawa, Canada, rounding out the card with seven new bouts.

Steve Bosse, who is coming off of a knockout victory over James Te Huna, will meet Sean O’Connell, who is coming off of a first round stoppage defeat at the hands of Ilir Latifi, in a light heavyweight bout. Canadian middleweight Elias Theodorou will clash with the electrifying “Smilin’” Sam Alvey.

In addition, Jason Saggo has been scheduled to scrap with Leandro Silva, while Misha Cirkunov will welcome Ion Cutelaba to the UFC in a 205-pound contest.

The famed Tristar Gym in Canada will showcase a few more of its combatants as well, as Olivier Aubin-Mercier gets Thibault Gouti, and Alex Garcia signed on the dotted line to meet Colby Covington. Rounding out the madness at UFC Fight Night 89 will be a bout showcasing recent returnee and Bellator veteran Tamdan McCrory, who will meet Krzysztof Jotko.

Reigning Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino may finally be making her UFC debut in the near future.

While it most certainly won’t be the long sought-after super fight against former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC is considering booking Justino at May’s UFC 198 in her home of Brazil.

The fearsome slugger recently expressed her desire in fighting at this event:

“It has been almost 10 years since I last fought in my home country of Brazil,” Justino recently wrote on her website. “I am very lucky that over the last decade my Brazilian fans have continued to support me and my career as I chased my dreams as a world champion, while living and competing in America.”

“This May the UFC will be promoting an event in my hometown of Curitiba, Brazil, a city very rich in fight history. It would be an honor to return back to the city I was born in, and to step inside of the Octagon with an opportunity to prove myself as one of the best female fighters in the sport.”

It would be interesting to see what the UFC could come up with given the fact that the promotion doesn’t currently have a women’s 145-pound division.

Aside from Rousey, however, reigning 135-pound queen Miesha Tate, as well as former champion Holly Holm have both previously voiced their interest in a bout with “Cyborg”. Tate recently defeated Holm via submission at March 5’s UFC 196, and “The Preacher’s Daughter” has already stated she wants to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible.

Although it’s very short notice, a catchweight bout at 140 versus “Cyborg” would be a massive draw for the already packed card, which features heavyweight legend Fabricio Werdum defending his belt against Stipe Miocic.

Justino, who has attempted to cut down to bantamweight in the past, is well aware that the UFC doesn’t host her division at the moment:

“I know that the UFC does not have my division,” Justino recently wrote, “which is why I am asking my fans to help make this fight.”

A knockout machine, “Cyborg” has long been a household name amongst female fighters, and her jump to the UFC has always seemed inevitable given her drawing power.

Could that move be coming as soon as May?
