MMA Fighting has learned that Couture and Lyoto Machida have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 129 on April 30 in Toronto.
However, another UFC source states that this fight has been discussed, but it’s “not even close” to being finalized as of yet.
When asked by MMA FIghting at UFC 125 if the fight with Machida was a possibility, Couture stated that he had not signed a contract, but had verbally agreed to face Machida in 2011.

If you’re like us, you sometimes stand while waiting for your coffee at Starbucks or or at the urinal of an all you can eat crab shack and ponder things like, "Why can’t CagePotato have a TV show" and "Whatever happened to Luke Cummo?"
Since PBS isn’t big on our brand of humor, the television thing likely won’t happen any time in the near future, but we can give you the 411 on Cummo.
Apparently the pre-Machida-era pee drinking fighter from TUF 2 retired without telling anyone and is planning on launching an organic fight clothing line.
"Yeah, [I retired]. I have a bum knee from when I was fifteen. Excess weight caused a bulge in the meniscus and the surgeon convinced my mom to get it cut out. That’s not an excuse," the 3-4 UFC veteran told MMASucka recently. "I feel unbelievably fortunate to have been in the cage and made it out. If I was a gladiator, I would still be alive to tell the tale… like before my last fight when the photographer took my picture right before walking out into the arena. The flash burned a circle into my vision and it didn’t go away for a while."
In case you’re wondering if the new age nutrition buff still enjoys things like coffee enemas and drinking his own piss, well as they say "old habits never change." Apparently though, they do evolve into something stranger and more disgusting.
Georges St. Pierre remains the best fighter in all of mixed martial arts, regardless of weight class.
There are arguments, to be sure, for other fighters, namely middleweight champ Anderson Silva or featherweight champ Jose Aldo, getting the No. 1 spot. Most of those arguments center around the fact that Silva and Aldo are finishers, while St. Pierre tends to win decisions.
I’m sympathetic to those arguments, but what St. Pierre does in his decision victories is amazing: In his four decisions as the UFC welterweight champion, the 12 judges have turned in scorecards of 50-45, 50-45, 50-45, 50-43, 50-44, 50-45, 50-44, 50-45, 50-45, 50-44, 50-44 and 50-43. It doesn’t get more dominant than that.
So St. Pierre remains on top. Find out the rest of the Top 10 below.

Chinzo Machida didn’t prove the effectiveness of Machida Karate last night, losing a decision to Leonardo Laiola at WFE Platinum in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. His brothers Lyoto and Take cornered him, shouting encouragement to no avail, as he wasn’t active enough to grind out a win. The first round saw Chinzo fighting off a rear naked choke attempt in the final seconds. The last round was devoid of action, with extensive clinching and just a handful of strikes thrown. According to his brother Take postfight, Chinzo broke his hand in the first round and was taken to the hospital immediately after the bout. Machida’s MMA record drops to 1-2, while Laiola’s increases to 3-0.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida was in attendance at yesterday’s weigh-ins for WFE Platinum, a Brazilian promotion that’s hosting an event tonight at the Fiesta Bahia Hotel in Salvador. Lyoto was there to support his brother, Shinzo Machida (1-1), who returns to MMA after a four-year absence. The Dragon spoke with Brian D’Souza about his brother, his controversial fight with Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, and Anderson Silva’s prospects against Vitor Belfort.

When you’re trying to rank MMA fighters, it’s easy to say you’ll just rank them based on who they’ve beaten and who they’ve lost to inside the cage. It’s a lot harder to actually create the rankings when you realize that it’s mathematically impossible to rank every fighter ahead of the guys he’s beaten and behind the guys who have beaten him.
That’s the challenge of picking the No. 2 light heavyweight in the world right now. UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua is No. 1, but there are three candidates for No. 2: Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. And there’s simply no way to rank those three without putting one of them behind someone he’s beaten, and another one ahead of a man who has beaten him. Machida beat Evans, Evans beat Rampage, and Rampage beat Machida. Any way you slice it, someone has to get ranked ahead of someone who beat him in the cage.
