Rising strawweight star Mackenzie Dern will face a tough test against Marina Rodriguez for her next fight, as announced by UFC president Dana White earlier today.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, White said that Dern will battle Rodriguez for her next fight, on a date and venue to be determined.
“She does have a fight coming up,” White said. “Hopefully, it’s done. My people hate when I do this. She’s taking on Marina Rodriguez next, which is a great fight.”
Dern and Rodriguez are the number 5 and number 6 contenders in the strawweight division, which has recently earned a spot as one of the deepest divisions in the UFC. Rodriguez is fresh off her unanimous decision win over Michelle Waterson at UFC Vegas 26, while Dern submitted Nina Ansaroff at UFC Vegas 23.
Dern and Rodriguez are both still in the running for title contention as well entering their planned fight. Strawweight champion Rose Namajunas is expected to fight either top contender Carla Esparza or a rematch with Zhang Weili for her first title defense in her second reign as champion.
The winner of the proposed Dern vs. Rodriguez fight is surely to be one of the next women in line for a shot at the belt. Following her win over Ansaroff, Dern spoke with LowKickMMA in an exclusive interview and said that she was looking at a potential fight with Joanna Jedrzejczyk but that matchup never materialized.
Namajunas earned a first-round knockout over Weili at UFC 261 to re-claim the belt and begin her second run as the belt holder.
Dern has been on a run since suffering her first loss against Amanda Ribas, having won four straight including the submission of Ansaroff. Rodriguez’s lone defeat in her professional career was to former champion Esparza at UFC Fight Island 3.
The women’s strawweight division continues to entertain and a matchup between Dern and Rodriguez should bring more clarity to the title conversation.

Dern is coming off a first-round submission win over Nina Nunes this past weekend on the main card of UFC Vegas 23. As a result, Dern made it four wins in a row and also became the newest member of the strawweight division’s top five.
Former UFC two-weight champion Daniel Cormier recently stated that he would love to see Dern test herself against Jedrzejczyk next and that’s a fight the American is interested in.
“Yeah, definitely,” Dern told LowKickMMA when asked if she’d be interested to fight the former champion. “I’m down for any of them, any of those girls, I respect all of them so much. But I’m gonna train to beat whoever they offer me. She was an ex-champ, Carla Esparza ex-champ, all the girls I think are ex-champs except Yan Xioanan.
“I think Joanna is the one who doesn’t have a fight. … We’ll see, three to four months would be good. Hopefully, I can get a fight then.”
It would certainly be a great stylistic matchup as Jedrzejczyk — who hasn’t competed since her razor-thin split decision defeat to Weili Zhang in their UFC 248 war in March last year — is yet to face a ground specialist such as Dern.
So how does Dern see the matchup playing out?
“I think it’s like striking vs. grappling but to the next level,” Dern said. “Because me and Nina, we were striker vs. grappler but me and Joanna is even the next level, you know? Obviously she’s not coming off a pregnancy and things like that.
“I think it would be good, I think it would be awesome. But I’ve seen Joanna against Carla Esparza and I know she has good takedown defense. So definitely my hands will have to be good enough to get her to respect it and I think Joanna doesn’t respect the hands of almost nobody, just Weili Zhang and Rose. Other than that, she just puts her pace forward. So I think it’ll be a great fight, it would be really crazy.”

Dern is coming off an impressive first-round submission win over Nina Nunes at UFC Vegas 23 this past weekend. It put her on a four-fight winning streak while she will likely crack the top five of the women’s strawweight division soon.
Jedrzejczyk, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since her five-round war with Weili Zhang in March last year that saw the champion edge out a razor-thin split decision. She doesn’t seem eager to compete anytime soon either unless it’s for a fight that interests her or another title opportunity.
If Jedrzejczyk is willing to fight anyone next, however, Cormier would like to see her battle the ever-improving Dern in what would be a No. 1 contender fight for the 115-pound strap.
“If the former champ wants to fight, I would love to see (Dern) fight Joanna Jedrzejczyk because if she can win that fight, I don’t know if you can even question whether or not she should get a title fight if she beats Joanna Jedrzejczyk,” Cormier said on DC & Helwani (via MiddleEasy). “Mackenzie Dern has earned the right to fight the elite or the elite, and it’s because she is so in tune with who she is today, as a mother, as a wife, and just as an athlete…
“She’s so game on the feet, and once you’re on the ground with her, it’s like watching a Jiu-Jitsu tutorial. (Dominick Cruz) and I are watching the fight, and Mackenzie slides into the mount and immediately you’re like she’s going to go chase the armbar but she’s going to do it in a way where Nina Nunes doesn’t recognize that it’s coming, and that’s exactly what happened. Mackenzie Dern is truly something special, and it’s a joy to watch someone really mature into the athlete that people thought that she could become.”
It’s certainly an intriguing and fresh matchup. Whether Dern is ready for a former champion or whether Jedrzejczyk is interested in fighting her remains to be seen as of now.
