Yet another boxing legend is teasing fighting UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. It all kicked off when McGregor made his pro-boxing debut a few months ago when he stepped into the ring to take on former champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

As seen in that fight, McGregor looked good in the early rounds but tired out and Mayweather became the aggressor that eventually saw him finish the UFC megastar in the tenth round by TKO.

It seems that every fighter wants a chance to take on McGregor these days. That leads us to eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao who wants a piece of McGregor.

Pacquiao recently posted a photo of McGregor on his official Instagram account and teased fighting him next year. He issued an indirect and very cordial challenge to the UFC lightweight champion.

Keep in mind that Pacquiao becomes the second big-name boxer to come forward and express intentions to face McGregor in recent weeks.

If you recall, six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya was the first to call him out recently as he claimed that could take out the Irish fighter in as short as two rounds. Betting odds were released for the possible fight that had McGregor as the slight favorite against the 44-year-old De La Hoya, who hasn’t fought since losing to Pacquiao in 2008.

In regards to Pacquiao, he hasn’t fought since July where he dropped the WBO welterweight title via a controversial unanimous decision verdict against a then-unknown Jeff Horn in Brisbane, Australia.

Pacquiao sent out the following post:

Happy Thanksgiving! Stay fit my friend. #realboxingmatch #2018 @thenotoriousmma

Showtime executive vice president Stephen Espinoza told Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Snowden on Friday that the Aug. 26 superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is “tracking” to generate more than 4 million pay-per-view purchases.

According to the Los Angeles Times‘ Lance Pugmire, Espinoza said “it’s too early to declare a hard number,” but the fight is “tracking in the mid-to-high 4 million pay-per view buys.”

Pugmire added the fight is “expected” to top $600 million in total revenue and has a chance to exceed the record 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases generated by Mayweather’s 2015 fight against Manny Pacquiao.

“If we don’t reach the record, we’re going to be very, very close,” Espinoza said.

According to Pugmire, final pay-per-view numbers are expected to be released next week.

Skepticism rightly enveloped the lead-up to the fight, which pitted the undefeated Mayweather against McGregor in the UFC lightweight champion’s first-ever boxing match.

But in a pleasant surprise, Mayweather and McGregor put on a far more entertaining and competitive show than anyone could have expected.

While McGregor was ultimately defeated via 10th-round TKO, the Irishman held his own before the stoppage. According to MMA Fighting’s Mike Chiappetta, McGregor landed 111 punches total—30 more than Pacquiao connected on in his unanimous decision defeat against Mayweather.

“He’s a tough competitor,” Mayweather said after improving to 50-0, per MMAFighting. “I think we gave the fans want they wanted to see. He was a lot better than I thought he was.”

Quote: Mayweather vs. McGregor Will Be Bigger Than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

With only two days remaining until this weekend’s (Sat., August 26, 2017) massive Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., the question isn’t if the ‘Money Fight’ will be huge or not, but exactly how massive.

The benchmark has been set at a lofty end goal of five million pay-per-view (PPV) buys, a hugely profitable number that may or may not be tough to attain considering the event’s $100 price tag. The buildup to the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle has also been hit or miss, because while the fight will certainly get a huge amount of views, there have been ups and downs in the promotion of the fight, and live ticket sales certainly didn’t go as well as was hoped.

There’s at least one man who believes the bout can reach heights like these, however, and that’s the megafight’s color commentator Al Bernstein. The longtime SHOWTIME Sports commentator offered that opinion during a special edition of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani yesterday, declaring that he views Mayweather vs. McGregor as bigger than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao:

“My first thought was that it would be something of a spectacle, and guess what, that’s exactly what it is. . . I think the amount of attention that’s being paid to it, the amount of energy concentrated on it is actually more than I even thought it was going to be and, to be honest, even more than for Pacquiao-Mayweather.”

Based on that comparison, Bernstein believes Mayweather vs. McGregor will indeed surpass Mayweather vs. Pacquiao’s 4.6 million buy rate and even surge to the insane five-million buy mark, a number it is currently a two-to-one favorite to reach in sports books. If it does, he said, that will obviously be based on the sheer scope and hype of the event, not the legitimacy of the fight taking place:

“I do. The hardcore boxing fan will say, ‘Oh he’s equating it!’ and I’m not equating it in the ring necessarily but just the sheer amount of attention it’s getting. Quantitatively – this isn’t a scientific way of looking at it – my phone’s blowing up more than it did for Mayweather-Pacquiao. I have a friend who’s not even a sports fan, he doesn’t even watch the Super Bowl, and he’s buying this fight.”

Finally, Bernstein put the somewhat odd booking of an undefeated boxing great versus an MMA champ with no boxing bouts on his record in perspective, deeming it pure spectacle that wasn’t truly worthy of putting a 50-0 mark on “Money’s” current 49-0 record. In his mind, the over-the-top fight doesn’t diminish boxing nor MMA on its own merit:

“I see it as a one-off, so I’m not worried about the 50-0. I don’t even consider this. If you’re going for a record, you don’t fight a guy that’s 0-0 if the record is the idea. . . This is a one-off. This is a specific event that you can look at on its own and decide if you think it merits your attention or doesn’t merit your attention and look at it that way.

“Boxing’s had one of its best years in 2017 so my feeling is this doesn’t diminish boxing, it doesn’t diminish MMA. It’s a one-off event.”

Conor McGregor Vs. Floyd Mayweather

After what seemed like an eternity of speculation and angst, the date has finally been revealed! Come August 26th, the world is going to be glued to their television sets and monitors to witness one of the most unorthodox boxing matches in the history of boxing. Floyd Mayweather who is widely renowned as one of the best technical and defensive boxers the sport has ever seen will be fighting the outspoken and un-bashful mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor.

In his own discipline, McGregor is unquestionably a very successful fighter that has risen to the top of the ranks in recent years. The now 28 year old McGregor has 18 knockouts to his name of the 24 opponents that he has come up against. However, things are not going to be the same this time around, McGregor is not going to be fighting in the Octagon, but rather in a boxing ring and will be fighting by the rules of pure boxing which his opponent is very well versed with.

Floyd Mayweather has come out of retirement for this fight and is one of the best boxers of all time. He has a record of 49-0, of which 26 are knockouts. Will an MMA fighter be able to outdo one of the best boxers of all time at his own sport? Let’s see what the experts have to say…

Tyson Fury, who is a heavyweight boxer himself, is one of the few who thinks McGregor can actually win this fight. In fact, not only believes McGregor will win the fight but is confident that McGregor will knockout Mayweather in the first round. This seems a little far fetched, but maybe Fury see’s something the untrained eye does not.

Contrastingly, Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya see the whole fight as a kind of circus and don’t give McGregor any chance. Likewise, former two division UFC champ Randy Couture and famous boxing coach Angelo Reyes, are in agreement and don’t think that someone as inexperienced in boxing such as McGregor can actually take on a boxer with the experience, technical ability and reflexes of a high quality boxer, let alone a legend such as Floyd Mayweather.
