UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has finally addressed the wild rumors of a potential matchup with boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Rumors emerged this week that the UFC superstar could possibly step inside the boxing ring to challenge the recently retired Mayweather in a pivotal super fight.

Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., addressed these rumors first, stating that his son spoke of possibly coming out of retirement to face ‘some MMA fighter’. Mayweather Jr. himself confirmed these rumors as well, stating a bout with McGregor is ‘possible’.

UFC President Dana White, however, is not a fan of these recent rumblings. When asked about the rumors, White stated that they were “completely fiction, this is like bottom-feeder … stuff.”.

One man we had yet to hear from was Mayweather’s rumored opponent, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Until now that is.

McGregor took to Twitter to add speculation to the rumors by posting the following:

While McGregor has not officially responded to these rumors, this picture can indicate ‘Notorious’ is aware of the rumors and will defiantly stir the pot if it means keeping his name in the headlines.

Mayweather (49-0, Boxing) is coming off of a unanimous decision win, in what was said to be his final bout inside the ring, to Andre Berto back in September.

McGregor (19-3, MMA) comes off a submission loss, his first under the UFC banner, to Stockton native Nate Diaz in early March.

While McGregor holds amateur experience from his youth in boxing, the Irishman certainly will be out of his element in a boxing match with a such a high-caliber defensive boxer as Mayweather.

No official confirmation has yet been made on the potential boxing bout.

The last few weeks have been rife with crazy reports and headlines surrounding current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. His brash and outspoken style until this point has been limited to pre-fight hype periods and keeping interested fans in the loop on his plans between bouts. Now, his antics outside the octagon seem to be far more outlandish, and also very much against the promotion’s wishes by all accounts.

It all started with a retirement announcement by McGregor, which was later revealed to be false but also in connection to some contractual disputes. ‘The Notorious’ didn’t wish to attend the first UFC 200 media conference for his rematch with Nate Diaz, and so he was later pulled from the milestone pay-per-view event. The madness didn’t stop there though.

Conor McGregor..

The self proclaimed face of the UFC was beginning to become agitated, as was obvious by his Twitter rants about PPV numbers declining at UFC 200, and also his further false announcement of being reinstated in his second bout with Diaz. So what was going on with the former company man? That was the question, and it still hasn’t fully been answered, then came the Floyd Mayweather news.

Conor McGregor Floyd Mayweather

Out of the blue emerged rumours that McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather had nearly finalized a deal for a super fight allegedly worth a billion dollars. The MMA and boxing worlds were thrown in to a frenzy, but credible media sources such as Ariel Helwani denied the credibility of the reports, and UFC president Dana White was quick to shoot down these rumours as ‘gutter journalism.’

After hearing from many people connected to both fighters, finally Floyd Mayweather Jr himself has spoken up…

Conor McGregor is once again the subject of much debate in the mixed martial arts community, and most recently it’s been surrounding UFC 200. The second major milestone pay-per-view event for the promotion originally saw a feature rematch between McGregor and Nate Diaz as the main event, but a sequence of unexpected events put that dance to bed in a rather surprising turn of events. ‘The Notorious’ had refused to attend the first week of the media tour for UFC 200, and as a result UFC president Dana White would later confirm McGregor was no longer fighting on the July 9 card.

The news was met with varying reactions, with many predicting the whole saga was part of a media stunt by the promotion and Conor McGregor. As things transpired further, following a brief Twitter retirement by the Irish striker, it looked as though the 145-pound king really was embroiled in a legitimate beef with his employers. After a number of social media rants and appeals to be reinstated, backed up by a bogus announcement that the Diaz rematch was back on, many argued that ‘The Notorious’ has taken a little bit of a hit as far as his image is concerned.

Many times in the past McGregor had declared himself the face of the UFC, and perhaps the promotion didn’t like the direction they were heading with him. It sounds as though the final straw was McGregor hoping to re-dictate the terms of his recently signed contract, and the UFC was stuck between a rock and a hard place. They have this money making PPV selling machine, but suddenly he’d begun turning on his creators. A strange and somewhat unfortunate conundrum for sure.

The news of a reported fight between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and the modern boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. pretty much ruptured the internet yesterday (Friday May 6, 2016). And although highly debatable as per the sources of origin and lack of confirmation, there’s one interview that everyone has slept on. Floyd Mayweather senior, father of ‘Money’ Mayweather, was asked about his son’s next fight, and his response was truly shocking…

With all the reports coming out today that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor could possibly step into the boxing ring to take on Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, UFC President Dana White has been radio silent on the subject. Until now that is…

According to the LA Times, White had no idea of the bout until being asked:

“McGregor-Mayweather? No,” he said. “It’d be very hard to pull off. I’ve heard Floyd is on a worldwide vacation on Mayweather Air spending millions in every country he visits.”

When White was asked on weather a potential boxing match was possible or the Irishman’s future, he had this to say:

“Never. We’re his promoter. We’d have to make the fight.”

White called the rumor “completely fiction, this is like bottom-feeder … stuff.”, and also mentioned that ‘Notorious’ has not ever mentioned a potential bout with ‘Money’.

The bout was originally reported by The Sun stating that “Both sides just have to agree on the purse and sign the paperwork — which sources say is imminent — and an announcement is likely to be made in the coming weeks”.

Mayweather (49-0, Boxing) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in September in what was said to be his final bout inside the ring.

McGregor (19-3, MMA) comes off a submission loss to Nate Diaz, his first under the UFC banner, and is currently in the midst of a feud with UFC brass over his involvement in UFC 200.

The two men have exchanged barbs over the year, however neither side has yet to comment on the rumored boxing match spectacle.

It’s been yet another weird news week for fans of mixed martial arts, and once again UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is at the centre of it all. His standoff with the UFC got escalated another notch today, as rumors ran wild of a planned ‘billion dollar’ boxing match against Floyd Mayweather.

The two polarizing pugilists do have a history, with plenty of trash talk going back-and-forth, and the now retired ‘Money’ Mayweather has gone on record many times claiming he doesn’t know who McGregor is. Aside from the obvious fact ‘The Notorious’ is signed to an iron-clad contract with the UFC, a fight against one of the greatest boxers of this era is unlikely, at best, for a number of reasons.

For starters, for McGregor to step in to the boxing ring would probably take away his biggest advantage, the mixed elements of his martial arts training. That said, a billion dollar fight would probably mean a swift retirement fund for McGregor, so who wouldn’t take that fight?

So obviously social media went in to a state of frenzy following the rumors of the fight that was allegedly ‘close to agreement.’ A number of high-profile names in the sport have given their take on the situation, but there are plenty of hilarious reactions too.

So let’s start with the biggest news of the last week, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 200. The two will rematch, again at welterweight, in the huge July 9 pay-per-view. The second fight in four months between ‘The Notorious’ and Diaz has been met with mixed reactions, mainly due to the featherweight title that McGregor holds remaining in status. The result of Diaz’s second round submission over the Irish star on March 5 is a meteoric rise in popularity for the Stockton native, and he’s been on a massive media tour lately.

His most recent interview was with Chael Sonnen, and it’s quite possibly the best in mixed martial arts history. In typical Diaz fashion, the younger of the infamous Diaz brothers stays true to himself and his feelings towards the UFC and their plans…
