UFC 202 proved to be one of the greatest cards ever, let alone in 2016. The enjoyment levels of the Las Vegas card got off to a great start with some thoroughly exciting prelims, before the main card delivered in spades. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz faced off for the second time in the main event, and were nicely backed up by straight finishes on the undercard. Perhaps most notable before the main event was Anthony Johnson’s tooth-removing 13-second KO of Glover Teixeira.

The main attraction rolled in to town, and it was a thriller of epic proportions. We knew the bitter rivals at the top of the card would throw down hard, but most predicted the fight would end in the early or middle rounds. The Irishman and the Stockton bad boy had other ideas, making good use of the championship rounds. By the time the full allotted 25 minutes was up, both men wore the fight.

Respect Between Warriors

After the fight was done we saw a beautiful show of respect between McGregor and Diaz. The fight was indeed close, but in the end it was the Irish star who got his vengeance on Diaz. The judges handed down a majority decision for the featherweight champion. After their narrow war, Diaz didn’t waste time in making his opinion on the outcome known.

The post-fight media scrums were highlighted by Diaz vaping some CBD oil and also claiming he won. The Stockton native says he scored the fight four rounds to one in his own favor. Now three days removed from the event, Diaz is still taking shots at McGregor’s decision win. Check out the social media shot fired from Nate Diaz’s official Twitter account:

Shots Fired!

UFC president Dana White sensationally shot down Diaz’s request for a trilogy fight. In doing so he also revealed that McGregor could fight Eddie Alvarez without having to vacate the 145-pound belt. The decision caused outrage among certain sects of fans, and most likely Diaz too. The lightweight champion Alvarez had already called out for the winner of McGregor vs. Diaz 2 some weeks ago.

It looks as though Jose Aldo might be the junior champ for a little longer than expected.

We’ve waited a long time for it, but now UFC 202 is just one day away. The main event rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor has all the hype you’d expect and more, but don’t sleep on the rest of the card. Outside of the welterweight main attraction is a co-main event tilt between light-heavyweight title hopefuls Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira.

Both men will look to make a stamp in the second fiddle position and likely take a swipe and Daniel Cormier with a victory. In perhaps his last welterweight performance, Donald Cerrone will take on heavy-handed wrestler Rick Story. Korean ‘Ace’ Hyun Gyu Lim will battle Mike Perry also at 170, and a welterweight scrap between Tim Means and Sabah Homasi opens the main card.

There’s a lot on the line at UFC 202 on August 20. The rich back story behind the main event attraction has fans salivating with 11 days left to wait. Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor are currently dominating the headlines in the lead up to their second fight, as the Irishman sets out to avenge his first UFC loss. Diaz set the MMA world ablaze when he submitted McGregor at UFC 196, and will look to prove it was no fluke at UFC 202. As well as pride, there’s a lot of money in the balance for these two titans of modern mixed martial arts.

Super stardom is something ‘The Notorious’ has grown used to, but for the Stockton brawler Diaz it’s all quite new. There’s no doubt he’s been one of the most exciting and skilled lightweights on the UFC roster or a while, but he never really had the backing of the promotion until now.

Conor vs. Diaz

Now that he is in the limelight, Diaz has been making the most of it. One huge question that’s been raised over the recent weeks is regarding a potential third fight. Both Diaz and McGregor agreed that they would fight again should the Irishman get revenge at UFC 202. These comments probably won’t sit right with the interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo, but we all know the reasons why that fight would indeed happen.

Money talks, and in the UFC today it seems to be the only language in circulation. Speaking during the Jon Anik and Kenny Florian podcast, former lightweight and featherweight contender ‘Ken-Flo’ says there’s going to be much more money for Nate Diaz if he loses at UFC 202.

Kenny Florian

“Heading in to (UFC 202), I feel like Nate (Diaz) has nothing to lose. Because if he loses, can you imagine having a trilogy here? There’s more money in it for him if he loses.”

Ray Longo

“Here’s the problem man, if you’re telling me that there’s no money involved and they are just fighting, Nate Diaz wins. But there’s an obscene amount of money, and that part of it scares me a little bit.”

These guys are potentially scratching the surface of a very controversial subject here. Let’s be frank here, if anyone is going to do the exact opposite of what Florian and Longo are dancing around, it’s Nate Diaz. The anti-BS crusader of the UFC, in my personal opinion, would rather beat Conor McGregor 10 times for free than take a loss for any amount of money.

Thoughts?

Jose Aldo Wants Superfight Against Dominick Cruz

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz made some interesting comments earlier this month. ‘The Dominator’ claimed he’d be interested in a jump up to featherweight and an instant title shot, stating he’d place his 135-pound strap on the line against interim champion Jose Aldo. UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz made some interesting comments earlier this month. ‘The Dominator’ claimed he’d be interested in a jump up to featherweight and an instant title shot, stating he’d place his 135-pound strap on the line against interim champion Jose Aldo. This would be in the absence of the champ Conor McGregor, who is currently embroiled in welterweight proceedings with Nate Diaz.

Superfights are an intriguing idea, but there has never been a UFC champion to hold two belts at the same time. Randy Couture and BJ Penn successfully won titles in two different weight classes, but since that time fights have been scheduled but have fallen apart consistently. It was interesting that once McGregor made the move up to lightweight to face champion of the time Rafael dos Anjos, other title holders began talking about jumping up or down.

After getting starched by ‘The Notorious’ at UFC 194, Jose Aldo returned at UFC 200 with a decision victory over Frankie Edgar. With McGregor tied up two divisions above, Aldo’s interim title might not be just for show. e has a shot at facing undisputed bantamweight boss Dominick Cruz if it interests their employers, and has responded to ‘The Dominator’ calling him out, as per The Daily Star:

“I think it’s great that Dominick is saying that,”said Aldo. “It’s a new phase we’re going through. Conor did that, so everybody is trying to mirror him,” said Aldo. “I like that. I hope it happens, that this fight can happen in the future. But first, I need to become the undisputed champion.

“After that, we can challenged everyone and shoot at everyone because that helps your career and the financial side of it.”

Cruz and Conor

Two belts are better than one, but where would this leave the featherweight division in terms of the contenders? If Cruz moves up and beats Aldo, the line of actual 145-pounders will be waiting for a whole new saga to play out. What if Aldo wins but then Mcregor beats Diaz and stays at welterweight for a rubber match? So many possibilities, but bear in mind they all hinge on the very fragile prospect of a two-belt UFC superfight.

So don’t hold your breath.

The hype is steadily beginning to build for Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 2. After a brief but massively entertaining rivalry before UFC 196, McGregor and Diaz were swiftly scheduled for a rematch at UFC 200 UFC 202. On just 11 days notice, replacing lightweight champ at the time, Rafael dos Anjos, Diaz was able to end McGregor’s impressive six-year streak with conviction. Wobbled and lot on the mat, ‘The Notorious’ tapped to a tight rear naked choke to conceive his first loss under the UFC banner.

With the 145-pound title now at the interim stage with Jose Aldo defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200, there have been a lot of questions about McGregor’s will to cut back down. He fought on March 5 as a welterweight and will do so again on August 20, but take weight out of the equation for a second. If the Irish striker can defeat his Stockton rival at UFC 202, what’s to stop a trilogy fight being booked just as quickly as the rematch?

Nate Diaz made good on his word against Conor McGregor at UFC 196…

With such a colourful rivalry, Diaz and McGregor make for great viewing. Take yesterday (July 26, 2016) with Nate Diaz appearing on the Conan O’Brien show. A recorded message by ‘The Notorious’ was played for Diaz during the now ultra-popular Diaz’s segment. The resulting troll reminded us of just how fun their rivalry can be, also leading to musings about a rubber match if the Irishman can get the win back:
We’ll have to wait another tree weeks before we see exactly how the rematch plays out, but you can bet your bottom dollar the rivalry will get far more fierce as we approach August 20. Will the featherweight champion score welterweight revenge, or will it be the Stockton bad boy who remains ‘not surprised?’

Conor McGregor Sparring Larger Man In Preparation For Nate Diaz

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor returns to face Nate Diaz for the second time at UFC 202. The two have a storied rivalry that dates back to Diaz calling out McGregor following his dominant win over Michael Johnson. At that time ‘The Notorious’ was heavily rumoured to be moving up to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, and the Stockton bad boy Diaz was not amused.

Eventually McGregor would be booked in to face dos Anjos, who at the time was on a killer streak, but the fight would never take place. Instead, in a strange twist of fate, Diaz would replace the injured Brazilian and March 5 was fast approaching by this point. Diaz had just 11 days notice to prepare for the biggest fight of his life; a fight to prove his worth, to reap the seeds he’d sewn for 10 years in the UFC, and to face the man he’d accused of ‘taking everything I worked for motherf*cker!’

Conor vs. Diaz

Their rivalry was so fierce in that small window of opportunity before the fight, and the bout itself was so entertaining that an immediate rematch was granted. Although McGregor had tapped out in a somewhat unquestionable loss, his sway with the promotion and the simple marketability of their beef made the booking a no-brainer. The time since has been filled with many questions regarding ‘The Notorious” ability to close the huge gap in grappling skill, and also to face the man with a much larger frame and reach.

This latest video from ‘The Mac Life’ shows the featherweight boss taking on a taller foe in sparring.

We also know that McGregor has been training with elite black belt BJJ star Dillon Danis recently. As far as Diaz is concerned, he tends to keep his training and sparring pretty much on the down low.
