Michael Bisping Eyeing Fights With Nick Diaz & Winner Of Rockhold-Weidman II

Fresh off a win over Anderson Silva, Michael Bisping has several potential opponents in his cross hairs. Bisping’s manager Audie Attar told MMAFighting.com that not only does Bisping want to step in the cage with Nick Diaz, but he also earned the right to fight for the UFC Middleweight Championship. Middleweight champ Luke Rockhold will defend against Chris Weidman at UFC 199 in June, and Attar believes Bisping will face the winner.

“Nick Diaz is definitely calling him out and that sounds enticing and I think that would be an amazing matchup,” Attar said. “But for Mike and what he’s done in the sport, he’s earned the right to say, ‘I want the winner of Rockhold and Weidman.’ I think that’s what he’s doing.

“He hears Nick Diaz. He thinks that would be a fun, exciting fight. The fans would like to see that, but it’s his time now. I think for Mike right now, he wants a title shot. He’s earned that in his career.”

Bisping is currently on a three-fight winning streak, and is 4-2 in his last six fights. Diaz’s marijuana-related suspension will be lifted on August 1st.

Gegard Mousasi Calls Out Anderson Silva For Potential Showdown

No. 9-ranked former Strikeforce champion Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi has made it quite clear who he’d like to fight next: former long-time divisional kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva. No. 9-ranked former Strikeforce champion Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi has made it quite clear who he’d like to fight next: former long-time divisional kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

Mousasi’s manager, speaking with MMAFighting.com on the topic yesterday (March 9, 2016), noted that “The Dreamcatcher” would be open to squaring off with Silva in the next few months, preferably at June’s UFC 199, or July’s UFC 200:

“All of the Brazilian media has been contacting us today about a potential Mousasi/Silva match-up in Brazil. It is an exciting idea as it will be a stadium show. However, the Curitiba card is right around the corner. Therefore, we need adequate time to put the camp together and prepare. We would gladly fight Anderson. However, a May date is too soon of a return. Had we known immediately after the London card then maybe. But that time has passed us, unfortunately. We will take the fight gladly. However, I think it would make more sense to have them fight either at UFC 199 in LA at the earliest, or alternatively, at UFC 200 in Vegas at the latest. Gegard wants to have the fastest turnaround possible while not compromising the organization and structure of his training camp. So the question should go back directly to Anderson on whether he accepts our challenge at either UFC 199 or UFC 200.”

Mousasi is coming off of a dominant one-sided win over Brazilian slugger Thales Leites at last month’s UFC Fight Night 84.

Silva also competed on that card, dropping a somewhat controversial decision to Michael Bisping in his return from a year-long suspension.

This fight definitely makes sense for both men, as Mousasi would have the chance to add a huge name to his resume, while the 40 year old Silva would have the chance to see if he could still compete with the top 10.

Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen will mix it up – outside the Octagon this time.

The two will be part of the March 20 UR Fight event in Phoenix that airs live on internet pay-per-view.

According to a report by MMAjunkie.com, Bisping is cleared to do the submission grappling event because it does not fall under regulation of the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission. Bisping was medically suspended following his February win over Anderson Silva.

Along with Bisping-Sonnen, the event features former Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio in a pro wrestling match, Dan Severn vs. Tank Abbott in an MMA bout and Roy Jones, Jr. vs. Vyron Phillips in a boxing affair.

Bisping lost to Sonnen, who is also suspended from fighting in MMA at the moment for a failed drug test, back in 2012 via decision.

Herb Dean On Not Stopping Bisping-Silva Fight, Bisping Blaming Him For Injuries

Veteran MMA referee Herb Dean spoke with Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour about the controversy stemming from this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 84 main event between Anderson Silva and Michael Bisping. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On his decision not to stop the action when Michael Bisping’s mouth piece came out:

“That’s the way the mechanic works, is that you replace the mouthpiece during a lull in the action,” Dean said during an appearance on Monday’s edition The MMA Hour. “And [Bisping] signaled once, and Anderson was actually in the process of attacking him. For a lot of reasons that are pretty evident you can’t stop to replace the mouthpiece during a heated exchange, and that qualified as a heated exchange.

“If we were doing that, we’d have guys getting their bell rung, spitting out the mouthpiece to get a little extra time or sometimes you’re feeling a little tired, just spit your mouthpiece out. So obviously we can’t do that in the middle of an exchange.”

On why he didn’t stop the fight when Silva dropped Bisping with the flying knee:

“Well, [Silva] hit him with the knee and dropped him, and then he walked off and started to celebrate,” he said. “He had been dropped, but you know, in MMA we don’t stop the match just because someone gets dropped. I saw that when he fell he was not unconscious. He was facing Anderson. Anderson didn’t give him a threat to protect himself from, but — I don’t want to start playing what if, what if he attacked and whatnot — the bottom line is he didn’t attack. The round ended and, because Anderson was celebrating, there was some confusion as to what was going on.

“But I never had any confusion. I knew that I hadn’t stopped the match and that the match was going to continue.”

On Silva celebrating as if he’d won and Herb Dean’s fight to restore order:

“I wasn’t really that worried about that because, it was pandemonium and of course I can’t run around and start yelling at everyone to get out of the cage, there was just too many people,” he said. “But, what I did do is I let people know that the fight wasn’t over. And eventually, once I started expressing that it wasn’t over to the right people — the inspectors, the fighters — that order was going to be restored and we’d continue with the match.”

On Bisping’s claims that the facial damage he suffered was Dean’s fault:

“Well, I don’t know, maybe he’s not aware of the rules,” he said. “A lot of fighters, most of them real the fouls but they don’t read all the rules on the mechanics. Maybe he wasn’t aware of that. But the rule is to replace the mouthpiece during a lull in the action.”

Bisping, competing in his home country of England, moved up to fourth at middleweight. “The Count” climbed three spots, vaulting ahead of Lyoto Machida, Silva and Tim Kennedy.

There was plenty of movement in the 185-pound division, as Uriah Hall and Derek Brunson both jumped past Thales Leites, who lost to Gegard Mousasi in the co-main. C.B. Dollaway moved back in, slotting in at 15th.

In the overall pound-for-pound Top-15, middleweight champion Luke Rockhold jumped into a tie for fifth with heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. Rafael dos Anjos, the lightweight champion who is out with a broken foot, fell three spots to seventh.

Jussier Formiga is now ranked fourth at flyweight, climbing ahead of Ian McCall, while Dustin Ortiz and Ali Bagautinov flipped for 10th and 11th in the division.

At bantamweight, Jimmie Rivera moved ahead of John Lineker and Frankie Saenz for 11th, while unbeaten Cody Garbrandt debuted at 15th. Lightweight saw Dustin Poirier and Evan Dunham move up to 10th and 13th, with Michael Chiesa falling a spot to 14th.

Hector Lombard, who meets Neil Magny later this year, is now ranked 13th at welterweight, shifting himself ahead of Thiago Alves and Albert Tumenov. Jan Blachowicz jumped to 14th and Nikita Krylov debuted at 15th at light heavyweight, while Ruslan Magomedov is now tied with Alexey Oliynyk for 14th at heavyweight.

In the strawweight division, Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Joanne Calderwood flip-flopped for 10th and 11th, while Valentina Shevchenko and Sarah Kaufman did the same at bantamweight for the females.

The rankings will once again be updated next week after UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz takes place Saturday night from Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
