UFC on FOX 2 Predictions: Keys to Victory for Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping

In tonight’s co-main event of UFC on Fox 2, former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) will take on Michael “The Count” Bisping (22-3) for a chance at current UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva later this year.Sonnen…

In tonight’s co-main event of UFC on Fox 2, former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) will take on Michael “The Count” Bisping (22-3) for a chance at current UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva later this year.

Sonnen enters the bout as much as a 5-to-1 favorite, and his ability to take down his opponents and keep them there is what most fans are anticipating to happen in this fight.

Bisping’s keys to victory include keeping the fight on his feet and scrambling whenever his back hits the canvas. Sonnen’s biggest weakness has always been his submission defense, but Bisping hasn’t submitted anyone since 2005. If it comes down to that, he should wait until late in the fight to go for them and work to get back to his feet for the first two rounds.

This can work against the Brit, as sometimes referees are reluctant to stand up fights when the guy on bottom is working to improve his position. Bisping isn’t one to sit on his back and wait for the stand-up, and he may find himself using up more time than necessary to get the fight back to where he has the biggest advantage over his opponent.

Bisping also has the ability to break down his opponents over the course of the bout, but with this one only being scheduled for three five-minute rounds, he will have to get off to a quick start and make sure he secures the victory of each round on the scorecards if it goes there. Bisping has a history of being a slow starter, and it could cost him here if the fight begins like some of his other ones.

Sonnen has never been stopped with strikes and Bisping has never shown one-punch knockout power so out-working his opponent is something he will have to do in this fight for the duration.

Sonnen’s keys to victory are different from Bisping’s, but he also has a similar skillset when it comes down to out-working his opponents and breaking them down over the distance. He just does it on the ground.

The 34-year-old will have to take this fight to the mat, and that will be where this fight is won for him. Offense is key to him making sure the judges favor his takedowns over Bisping’s takedown defense and ability to scramble back to his feet.

This has the making to be a controversial fight in terms of how the judges score the bout. They usually favor the guy on top in a close fight, and if that’s going to be anyone in this fight, it’s Sonnen. Bisping will have to make his opportunities to strike count whenever there is a scramble, but don’t expect to see Sonnen give him much room when it’s there. Sonnen will have to be on him like glue if he wants to keep him from working towards the decision win and obtaining his own.

In 2011, the UFC hosted its first live event on Fox with the UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line. After nearly an hour of speculation and prediction by Dana White and Brock Lesnar, we saw Junior Dos Santos crumple Cain Velazquez in a mere 64 seconds. Dana White seemed content with the short fight saying, “The bottom line is we did our introductory fight on FOX. Dude, this is what they ordered seven years of. This is it. This is what you get.” However, many fans were left wanting more.

Lucky for them, they will get what they wished for tonight with UFC on Fox 2.

There is one matchup on the UFC on Fox 2 fight card which is critical to the middleweight title picture. Dana White has confirmed that the winner of Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping will fight current middleweight champion Anderson Silva. With this key matchup only hours away, let’s dive in to what is and what may be tonight.

Michael Bisping Flipping off UFC Fans Is Actually Good for the Sport

Michael Bisping is a controversial man who does controversial things.  Because of this, he’s grown to become one of the UFC’s largest stars.

From coaching multiple seasons of “The Ultimate Fighter” to being in the main event of multiple “Fight Night Live” events and overseas pay-per-views, Bisping is fantastic at mixing fame with infamy.

Just yesterday, Bisping responded to a negative fan reaction at the “UFC on Fox 2” weigh-ins by flipping-off the crowd, which nearly cost him a sponsor.

Should this have even been an issue in the first place?

I think Bisping deserves to flip-off as many fans as he wants.

According to 5th Round, immediately after Bisping greeted the booing fans at the weigh-ins with a pair of middle fingers, Alden Halpern, the CEO of clothing company MMA ELITE, took to Twitter to voice his disapproval by permanently banning Bisping from being sponsored by MMA Elite.

But it turned out to be much ado about nothing; a short while later, Halpern retracted his statement, admitting that he had “jumped the gun.”

To be honest, I have a few conflicting feelings about this issue.

First off, I honestly think it’s a bit funny that a CEO of a major company took to Twitter to make a major announcement that was nothing more than a snap judgment that was later retracted.

You would think the CEO of one of the most popular MMA clothing brands currently on the market would have a little patience.

That said, I didn’t think much of Bisping flipping-off the fans.  Should we really expect any different?  At this point, all I do is shrug and say, “That’s Michael Bisping for you.”

I also think it’s important to note that Bisping’s antics have nothing to do with the MMA fanbase as a whole.

Whenever we see a controversial fighter do something controversial that focuses on the audience, we tend to make the same snap judgment that Halpern made: He hates the fans, and that’s bad for the sport and bad for business.

But I don’t think that’s true.  Bisping doesn’t hate the fans; Bisping hates his haters.

When was the last time Bisping flipped-off a crowd that was cheering him?  When was the last time Bisping snatched the mic away from Joe Rogan and told off a pro-Bisping crowd?

Some fighters take a negative fan reaction in stride.  Bisping is not one of those fighters.  Should he be criticized for that?  Occasionally.

Should that garner even more hate for him from the anti-Bisping crowd?  Absolutely.

But should that cost the man his livelihood?  Absolutely not.

We all know what Bisping is: He’s a bad boy.  And all sports have their bad boys.  I’d go one further: all sports need bad boys.

If all we had were squeaky-clean do-gooders, you and I know that it’d get very boring very quickly.

So give Bisping a little leeway, and just like Halpern, come to your senses the next time you think he should be seriously punished just for being himself.

UFC on FOX ‘Evans vs Davis’ Weigh-In Results & Video: Bisping Reps the 209?

“Forget all about that belt tomorrow, son.” (Video: YouTube/UFC)

Last night’s weigh-ins in the bag and we are officially one step closer to go-time. While these events are a mere formality in the fight business—I mean, who would show up unprepared, right?–they do give one more opportunity for fans to cheer or boo the fighters of their choice, and one more opportunity for fighters to win the mental war. With those assignments in mind, the men on stage and those in the bleachers made the most of the evening.

Though Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen have taken second billing on this evening’s card, they’ve more than pulled their own weight in the promotions department. While Chael has drawn plenty of hype for this bout, he’s largely focused the spotlight on himself with little attention paid to his opponent whatsoever. Bisping on the other hand has been in full heel mode in recent interviews, embracing his role as the bad guy and verbally attacking his foe whenever possible. Last night he responded to a chorus of boos by brandishing the ‘Stockton Heybuddy‘, a move that seemed to cost him a sponsor, at least momentarily. If these two jawing in the staredown didn’t get you amped for their bout, there’s little I can do for you.

Despite the main event being a mixed martial arts bout, much of the back-and-forth between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis has centered on wrestling credentials. “Mr. Wonderful” was undoubtedly the more decorated of the two during their NCAA careers, though Evans feels his in-cage ability will expose Davis’s “trash technique”. Upping the ante once more before they glove up, Davis sported a Penn State singlet as he hit the scales. Face to face, both men exuded incredible confidence and not a shred of intimidation.

UFC on FOX 2 Predictions: What a Chael Sonnen Win Means for the MW Division

Chael Sonnen’s trash talking has kept him relevant in the spotlight since his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117 and he is one win away from getting a rematch that he and the fans have desperately been seeking.

Sonnen will meet fellow trash talker Michael Bisping in the co-main event at UFC on FOX 2 Saturday night, in hopes of meeting Silva in the Octagon once again. Sonnen has done almost everything in his power to get a rematch with the champion, but a win this weekend will guarantee it.

Sonnen was originally supposed to face off against fellow 185-pound contender Mark Munoz until an injury forced Munoz out of the bout. The UFC made the decision to call up Bisping to replace “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” on just one week’s notice, with a title shot still hanging in the balance.

If Sonnen can get past his British counterpart, it will set up one of the most anticipated rematches in recent memory between Sonnen and the Brazilian. Sonnen is the only competitor to put up any sort of a fight against Silva, as he dominated and outwrestled “The Spider” for nearly five rounds until being submitted with just few minutes remaining. It was the first time fans had seen Silva pushed to the brink of defeat.

Despite the loss to Silva, fans are still interested in the thought of Sonnen attempting to dethrone the champion.

A tall task indeed, but based on their first enounter, it is likely their second bout would be just as competitive.

At this point, anything but a win for Sonnen would be a big disappointment.
