Pedro Munhoz Sean O'Malley UFC 276

Pedro Munhoz has released his official statement on the Sean O’Malley eye poke at UFC 276 that caused a no contest. The conclusion was no doubt bitter for Munhoz, but what surely made it worse was the number of fighters and fans alike who claimed Munhoz might have been exaggerating the severity of the eye poke to get out of the fight.

The battle was short, as it ended only a few minutes into the second round. Most would say it was a bit lackluster, as Pedro Munhoz was opting for more of a leg-kick-centered strategy that frustrated fans.

Regardless, nobody would be graced with a true conclusion to the fight due to the eye pokes. Things would end with a no contest, and ‘The Young Punisher’ would be faced with criticism for not wanting to fight with a single eye.

Pedro Munhoz Describes The Sean O’Malley Eye Pokes That Caused The UFC 276 No Contest

“To explain briefly what happened in the fight against Sean O’Malley, I was poked in the eye in the first round but kept fighting, and was hit with a low blow shortly after,” Pedro Munhoz said on Instagram, as translated from Portuguese by Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

“The fight restarted and we exchanged a few strikes. In the second round, that’s when I suffered another eye poke. I couldn’t see anything for 20 minutes. I was taken to the hospital and they used a special eyedrop that made my eye numb so they could open my eye.”

“They did an exam and the medical report I have is that there’s a scratch in the cornea all the way around it,” Pedro Munhoz continued. “I couldn’t open my eye because of that and couldn’t see anything. The referee asked if I could see at all and the doctor decided to stop the fight. That’s what happened tonight.”

This no contest makes ‘The Young Punisher’ 1-3-1NC in his last five fights. A once-dominant bantamweight who reached decisions against some of the toughest in the weight class, Munhoz has been experiencing a rocky road as of late.

Off the back of his one-sided third championship fight loss to reigning UFC featherweight titleholder, Alexander Volkanovski, former division champion, Max Holloway has labelled the New South Wales native as the pound-for-pound king in the promotion – as well as urging him to chase lightweight spoils a division higher.

Co-headlining UFC 276 on Saturday night against Volkanovski, Holloway suffered a unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) loss to the defending champion, as the duo closed the curtain on their trio of title outings – with the former scoring victories against Holloway each time.

As technical as they come in modern mixed martial arts, Volkanovski took a close first round against Holloway at the T-Mobile Arena, however, seen a massive sway in the outlook of the fight after opening a nasty laceration on the eyebrow and eyelid of Holloway in the second frame.

Max Holloway has backed Alexander Volkanovski to land lightweight spoils

Cruising to a one-sided triumph over the Hawaiin in another statement-making performance this year, the Australian received major props and plaudits from Holloway who addressed his loss on his official Twitter account.

“I’m still up 2-0 on knockdowns for trilogy,” Max Holloway jokingly tweeted. “Prob (Probably) gonna need a 4th (fight) to settle this. (Laughing face emoji) Just playing. Congrats to my brother @alexvolkanovski. Go get that 55 (lightweight) strap. You earned the shot. You’re #1 P4P right now.”

“To all the fans do not cry for me Argentina,” Max Holloway tweeted. “This is part of life. We need to rebuild and we will. I love you!”

Following his one-sided trilogy victory over Holloway, Volkanovski called for a lightweight title siege against either Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev, with the division championship currently vacated amid a recent weight-cut mishap from former undisputed kingpin, Oliveira.

“Max Holloway is an absolute beast,” Alexander Volkanovski told Joe Rogan during his UFC 276 Octagon interview. “I just proved to you that I want to be in this Octagon as much as possible. I want to be busy. I want to move up and go for double champ and I’ll keep two divisions busy. Charles (Oliveira), whoever gets that belt, no disrespect. I’d love to move up, get that double champ status.”

After a devastating finish by Alex Pereira at UFC 276, Khamzat Chimaev has now set his sights on his next desired opponent.

While the main and co-main event of UFC 276 didn’t really live up to expectations, one fight stood out as an impressive and intimidating performance by a UFC newcomer. ‘Poatan’ landed a clean left hook that dropped Strickland to a knee, and followed that up with a missile of a right hand that sent ‘Tarzan’ crashing to the canvas.

In only his third fight in the UFC, Alex Pereira had now broken into the top five of the middleweight rankings and has seemingly solidified a rematch with a man he knocked out in kickboxing, Israel Adesanya, for the middleweight title. However, with Khamzat Chimaev throwing his name into the mix, could this change things?

Khamzat Chimaev Wants War With Alex Pereira After Impressive UFC 276 Performance

‘Borz’ most recently saw action when he faced Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. The fight is still regarded as one of the best of this year (so far) and by the time this year ends, may stand as the fight of the year.

It was a back-and-forth brawl that left no stone unturned. Both men had to dig deep, and it was surprising at the time that the fight ended via decision. As both endured so much damage that the fight easily could’ve been over several times.

Now, Khamzat Chimaev seems to be ready to get back into the cage, with his call out of Alex Pereira after UFC 276. Taking to Twitter, Chimaev would send a direct message to Dana White and the UFC.

“I’m want to fight with this guy @UFC @DanaWhite let’s make it,” he said.

Obviously not afraid of the devastating knockout ability of ‘Poatan’, ‘Borz’ has staked his claim on the fight he wants next. It’s unclear if Chimaev gets the fight or not, but if he does, it would surely be an insane test for both fighters.

The worlds of both professional wrestling and mixed martial arts clashes more than once on last night’s monumental UFC 276 card in Las Vegas, Nevada – with event headliner, Israel Adesanya, stealing the show with his Undertaker-inspired walkout ahead of his main event outing against Jared Cannonier.

Headlining last night’s T-Mobile Arena event against the #2 ranked challenger, Cannonier, Israel Adesanya successfully defended his undisputed middleweight crown for the fifth time – courtesy of a rather routine unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) triumph over the course of five rounds.

Israel Adesanya managed to comfortably out-point Jared Cannonier over five rounds

Employing a patented and familiar, distance management gameplan against Cannonier – similar to approaches in recent matchups against the trio of Robert Whittaker, Marvin Vettori, and Yoel Romero – Israel Adesanya coasted over the course of the latter rounds to continue his perfect career run at 185lbs.

Treated to a pair of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) styled walkouts last night, Jessica-Rose Clark kicked off proceedings on the early preliminary card, walking out to WWE SuperStar, Shawn Michaels’ theme song, ‘Sexy Boy’.

Ahead of the night’s main event, however, Adesanya stole the show – right in front of WWE leaders and operators, Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, and Triple H – walking out to a flood of purple lights and smoke, donning a cowboy hat, and an urn – with the name of ‘Jared’ engraved on it, all to the music of professional wrestling legend and Hall of Fame inductee, The Undertaker

Off the back of a successful title defense against Cannonier, Adesanya already set his aim on defense number six – welcoming the opportunity to avenge two kickboxing losses to middleweight punisher, Alex Pereira.

Earlier on the main card, the Sao Paulo kickboxing ace managed to land a spectacular KO win over the #4 ranked, Sean Strickland in a billed potential title-eliminator – earning his third consecutive UFC victory.

Back in 2017, Pereira, a former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing champion, landed his second career win over City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya, stopping the striking ace with a brutal left hook knockout in his native Brazil.

Jon Jones expressed his disappointment with how Israel Adesanya called out Alex Pereira after his win.

This past Saturday, Israel Adesanya took on Jared Cannonier in the headlining bout for UFC 276 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, NV. Adesanya used a cautious approach against the challenger to come out on top of the judges’ scorecards by a unanimous decision.

‘The Last Stylebender’ faced criticism from the community for a non-exciting fight that saw many fans leave the arena halfway through the main event and before the final round.

Jon Jones trashes Israel Adesanya for his callout of Alex Pereira

Adesanya has been feuding with the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones for a while now. The reigning UFC Middleweight king took a sly dig at Jones during the build-up to his latest fight.

Following Izzy’s successful title defense over Cannonier, he would reference the Disney animated musical family movie Frozen to call out his old foe Alex Pereira, saying, “next time I put you on skates. You’re gonna get frozen like Elsa.”

‘Bones’ hosted a surprise fan Q&A after the event on Twitter. Jones kicked things off by taking aim at Adesanya’s callout first before moving on to other topics.

“Bro I can’t stop thinking about this sh*t. How are you going to threaten a guy like Alex with glossy fingernails and a frozen reference. I’m over here scratching my head.”

Jones is a fan of Alex Pereira

In a follow-up tweet, Jones shared his thoughts on Pereira’s electric knockout of Sean Strickland on the same card just a fight separated from Adesanya’s main event.

“Bro I just went back and watched Alex P fight!! Yeah I’m riding with him all day. He made it look way too easy. Really hard to believe he was unranked before this fight”

Jones further responded to fans asking when he’ll likely return to action and who he wants to fight next.

“I don’t know but I’m glad Dana came out and said something. I’m ready, I’ve been ready. Waiting on a date”

“At this point I’m looking to fight Stipe, I think it proves a lot more. Fighting a fairly one-dimensional fighter fresh off of knee surgery. I don’t know, I believe beating Stipe says more at this point”

Jon Jones is expected to face Stipe Miocic in his comeback fight likely in September or later this year although no official announcements have been made yet.

Donald Cerrone, Conor McGregor

Donald Cerrone called it a career after his latest outing at UFC 276.

This past Saturday, Donald Cerrone took on Jim Miller during the International Fight Week on the UFC 276 card at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, NV. Cerrone has been a mainstay in the sport since before its rise in popular culture, going as far back as the WEC days. The ever-reliant company man for the UFC called an end to a 16-year-long career after his latest loss.

Donald Cerrone reveals when he knew it was time to retire

During the post-fight press conference, Cerrone revealed when he first realized he was getting close to the finish line. ‘Cowboy’ pointed back to his fight with Conor McGregor in January 2020 saying he didn’t enjoy the preparations anymore.

“Before I fought McGregor, I knew it was close,” Cerrone said. “Then I did the McGregor fight and then I took another fight, just going through emotions. I didn’t enjoy it, didn’t love it.

“I knew time was soon and I just had to pick the right time. Coming in, I took a lot of time off and called my agent just to get a fight. I just knew this was going to be the last one.”

‘Cowboy’ regrets not doing it sooner

Cerrone spoke about how fighters tend to continue competing long after it’s time to hang up the gloves. He would look at other athletes in a similar position and understand how different his situation may be compared to others.

“You want it so bad, you still think you can still keep up and still hang with the young crowd and those guys,” he said. “I look at everyone’s age, I’m like, ‘he’s 40, he’s still doing it.’ But man, I’m 39, I think my 39’s a little different than some of these other guys’ 39. I live a wild rough life but it’s time to move on and just go play.”

According to ‘Cowboy’, if there’s one thing he wishes he could’ve done in his illustrious career, it’s to have retired sooner than UFC 276.

“The only regret I could say I have is I didn’t do this sooner.”
