Dana White claims Conor McGregor is level with Muhammad Ali on mental warfare ahead of UFC 303 return

UFC CEO Dana White thinks Conor McGregor’s mental warfare and trash talk is right up there with Muhammad Ali as one of the best ever.

McGregor is known for his trash talk and getting into his opponents’ heads, as he did it well ahead of the Jose Aldo fight. Speaking on the Flagrant podcast with Andrew Schulz before the Dublin press conference was cancelled, White heaped praise on Conor McGregor for his ability to play mind games.

“I don’t ever like to compare people to Muhammad Ali, ’cause to me, he’s the f—ing [man],” White said (via MiddleEasy). “And f— what he did in fighting, just as a human, what that guy accomplished, right? But, I don’t give a f— what anybody says. Ali, Conor, [same] level when it comes to mental warfare, really the two best of all time when it comes to mental warfare.

If you look back at Ali and you look at what he did to George Foreman in Africa, you look at what he did to Joe Frazier… Joe Frazier f—ing hated Muhammad Ali so f—ing badly. He’d show up at his camp outside and f—ing do all this s—. He would predict rounds. He would come up with f—ing incredible poems and sayings and things that he would do leading up to the fight,” White added.

“Then, you look at Conor McGregor,” White continued. “He’s picked rounds. I mean, the mental warfare that this guy had on so many of his opponents. And he would make these guys play into his game, get into their heads, f—ing embarrass them, and outwit them in every way, shape and form. The Eddie Alvarez fight going into Madison Square Garden, he is literally at Ali’s level when it came to mental warfare.”

McGregor is one of the top trash-talkers in MMA’s history, and he no doubt has gotten in opponent’s heads in the past.

The UFC removed all of McGregor’s free fights on YouTube and the pay-per-view was no longer available for purchase. But, on Wednesday, MMA journalist Ariel Helwani revealed there is optimism that the fight will happen at UFC 303.

“The vibes could not be any more different than Sunday and Monday,” Helwani said on The MMA Hour. “The positivity could not be any greater; it’s so much higher now; there is great optimism that all systems are a go.”

McGregor hasn’t fought since July of 2021 when he broke his leg against Dustin Poirier in their trilogy match.

Biaggio Ali Walsh

Biaggio Ali Walsh, the grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, scored his third-straight first-round finish inside the PFL Smart Cage on Friday night.

Biaggio Ali Walsh, 24, made his second appearance for the promotion after securing a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of Tom Graesser in just 45 seconds as part of the 2022 PFL Championship pay-per-view event last year. Walsh needed a little bit longer this time, but once again got the job done without seeing the second round. Stepping into the Smart Cage on Friday, Walsh was matched up with 1-1 fighter Isaiah Figueroa in a non-tournament amateur bout.

From the opening bell Biaggio Ali Walsh put on the pressure, pushing Figueroa to the fence before uncorking a vicious right hand that connected clean and rocked his opponent. Smelling blood in the water, Walsh showed great restraint, opting to pick his opponent apart with a more measured approach. It paid off as Walsh landed another brutal right hand, giving the referee no choice, but to step in and call for the stoppage just under the two-minute mark.

Biaggio Ali Walsh Determined to Create His Own Legacy

Following the victory, Biaggio Ali Walsh spoke with Sean O’Connell inside the Smart Cage, revealing that he was feeling a little tense in the early going.

“I started this fight off a little tense. Obviously nervous fighting in front of my hometown and everything so I had to relax for a second once I relaxed, that’s when I got everything adjusted,” Walsh revealed.

As far as what comes next, Walsh intends on staying busy by taking amateur fights until he feels comfortable turning pro.

“What’s next is I’m gonna fight again. After that, I’m going to fight again. And after that, I’m going to fight again. I’m going to keep fighting until I’m ready to turn pro,” Walsh continued.

Walsh admitted that being the grandson of one of the most famous sports figures of the 20th century brings an added level of pressure to perform, but he is determined to make a name for himself rather than rely on the legacy of a man known the world over as ‘The Greatest.’

“Make a name for myself. Create my own legacy. You know, every single fighter in the world wants to make their own name. Make their own legacy. I’m doing the exact same thing as any other fighter. I just have a famous grandfather is the only difference and with that, I get a little bit more pressure. A little more attention as well, but what happens in the cage is what really matters,” Walsh concluded.

Billed at The War of the Worlds – a battle of sports icons, boxing great, the late Muhammad Ali, and professional wrestling veteran, Antonio Inoki has once more emerged into the spotlight, 46-years on from the historic Tokyo, Japan matchup.

Ali, who passed away back in June 2016 at the age of 74 after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s as well as deteriorating and declining health, made the trip to the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo in 1976, sharing the squared circle with Japanese professional wrestling star, Inoki in one of the most acclaimed and historic sports cross overs in history.

The battle, which was contested between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki, took place over the course of 15 rounds in an eventual draw, took place under ‘special rules’ – however, Ali sporting boxing gloves, and Inoki, sporting wrestling boots and shorts, were considered to compete under certain mixed martial arts rules. The matchup was also refereed by the late, Gene LeBell – credited ‘The Godfather of Grappling’ – who passed away earlier this week at the age of 89 years old.

Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki battled over 15 rounds to a draw

Electing to play guard and often pull guard on occasion, Inoki, a professional wrestling pioneer often laid on his back over the course of the 15 round limit, attempting to chop at Ali’s legs and hope to limit the movement of the Louisville, Kentucky favorite.

Credited with outlining the first of many subsequent cross-over athletic contests in professional combat sports, the subject of Ali – Inoki was brought up over the course of the build-up, pre-fight, and then post-fight of note in 2017 ahead of another prominent boxing match between former multiple-time and weight champion, Floyd Mayweather, and former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor.

Touted worldwide as one of the greatest professional boxers of all time and to the consensus, the greatest heavyweight his generation – Muhammad Ali ended his career boasting a 56-5 professional record, featuring in historic events including TheTrilla in Manila, as well as The Rumble in the Jungle.

Brock Lesnar

Former UFC heavyweight champion and professional wrestling star, Brock Lesnar, has opened up on his encounter with the late, former heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad Ali – describing the latter’s embrace and overall aura as “powerful”.

Lesnar, a former undisputed heavyweight champion under the UFC banner, has yet to return to professional mixed martial arts since a July 2016 official ‘No Contest’ against Mark Hunt at UFC 200. Lesnar originally landed a unanimous decision win at the T-Mobile Arena, however, the result was overturned to a ‘No Contest’ after Brock Lesnar’s pre-fight drug test was flagged by anti-doping agency, USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency).

As for the iconic, Ali, the Kentucky hero passed away back in June 2016, after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s, and his declining health, having last competed professionally in 1981. Ali, regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights and professional boxers of all-time, as well as argued as the greatest puncher of his generation, retired from the sport boasting a 56-5 professional record.

In the time since his most recent professional mixed martial arts bout, Brock Lesnar returned to professional wrestling under the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) banner, recently closing their flagship, Summerslam event against fellow professional wrestler, Roman Reigns.

Brock Lesnar admitted his encounter with Muhammad Ali impacted him greatly

Reflecting on a brief encounter with Ali, Lesnar admitted back in 2016 before his UFC return, that he was impacted by the “powerful” energy omitted from the Louisville legend.

“I got to meet (Muhammad) Ali one time and all I remember when I met and shook the man’s hand was, he never talked, at that point, Parkinson’s had taken over,” Brock Lesnar said. “But I just remember when he (Muhammad Ali) extended his hand and he didn’t have to say anything to me, it was just – not a weird vibe, it was such a gracious handshake and it was just very, I can’t even put a word to it.”
“So, I felt something powerful from the man,” Brock Lesnar explained. “I watched pretty much all of his fights, I met him one-time and he never spoke a word to me but I felt the presence and power from him. So it was impactful for sure, here’s a guy who’s a boxer, who’s selling tickets, walking the walk and talking the talk. He set the stage, it’s big business, you’ve got to be flashy on the outside and flashy on the inside.”

“It’s a tragedy, my heart goes out to the family, to live with Parkinson’s for so many years, very difficult,” Lesnar said. “That’s just a battle inside, forget how great of a champion he was. The man had to live with Parkinson’s for how many years? That’s a feat in its own.”
