Chael Sonnen was offered to be the backup for Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz boxing fight on July 6: 'I accept'

Chael Sonnen was offered the role of backup for Jorge Masvidal’s upcoming boxing bout with Nate Diaz.

The long-awaited rematch between ‘Gamebred’ and the ‘Stockton Samurai’ was originally scheduled to go down on June 1 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. However, that plan has recently changed with their scrap receiving a new date and venue.

The fight will now emanate from The Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday, July 6. Boxing Scene was the first to break the news.

The date change also came with another interesting rumor suggesting that former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen was offered the role as a backup for the fight.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘The American Gangster’ confirmed that there was some truth to the news, but with one major caveat.

“I don’t like that word [backup],” Sonnen said. “They used a different work because there was no scenario where I would fight with Nate and they knew that. So it was a different word, but meaning that if Nate can’t do it, will you take on Masvidal? And I said absolutely. You know what pissed me off about that? First off, I never got the credit for it, and second, Masvidal said he would give me a contract and pay me the biggest bag and not throw his right hand [in the fight]. That was a stupid thing to say.

“To pay me my biggest bag before I asked for it makes me not respect you as a businessman. I never respected him anyway, but he didn’t know that. And then to not throw his right hand like he was Mr. Right Hand, but I accepted. Please put it in the contract that you’ll pay me a bunch of money and that you won’t hit me with your right hand. Does he think I would turn that down? What’s next? There’s no weigh-in? Where does his stupidity end? And whatever the answer is… Whatever he keeps on saying, I accept.

“Keep limiting yourself. I’m going to do all those things, and more. That’s why they call me a cheater.”

‘Juiced Up’ Chael Sonnen is ready to throw hands with Jorge Masvidal anytime

It’s no secret that there is no love lost between Chael Sonnen and Jorge Masvidal. ‘Gamebred’ has lobbed threats of physical violence against the man from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon on more than one occasion — his beef being Sonnen’s history of utilizing TRT and PEDs throughout his MMA career.

“I would fight Masvidal right now,” Sonnen added. “He can use his right hand. He can kick me in the nuts. He can do anything he wants. I will be juiced up and I will beat Jorge Masvidal anytime, but I won’t take the fight from Nate and that is exactly what I told these jabronis.”

Jake Paul makes a sizeable offer to face Jorge Masvidal within the MMA ruleset.

Masvidal is currently booked to face Nate Diaz in a boxing match on June 1, roughly four-and-a-half years on from their BMF title match in the main event of UFC 244.

The bout will also be the first of several boxing matches Masvidal is set to compete in. The 39-year-old had retired following his fight against Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 but felt the urge to compete again, like many fighters.

With the switch to boxing, Masvidal has also opened the door to being involved in ‘crossover’ boxing events, which has the chance of netting him a big paycheque.

The biggest one of these fights would come against Paul, who has managed to make quite the impression on the combat sports scene over the past few years. Paul has also faced several former MMA fighters, why draw the line at Masvidal?

Paul has even gone as far as say he would be willing to face Masvidal in an MMA fight. Paul had signed to PFL last year but nothing has been made official in terms of an actual MMA fight.

“The one thing I will say, they’re digging their own grave,” Paul said on his BS podcast. “I’m being so serious when I say that I want to fight them in MMA. Either Masvidal or Diaz in the PFL. $10,000,000 offer for either one of those guys. Again, they will literally hide behind the fact — Masvidal, ‘You can’t even box. What the f*** are you going to do coming over to MMA, bro? I’m f****** from Miami, Florida, bro. F****** f*** you, dude, don’t disrespect me you f****** jamoke.’ F****** bird brain, that’s what he hides behind.”

Paul would even call out former UFC champion Sean Strickland and rising contender Paddy Pimblett.

“Same with f****** Paddy [Pimblett] and Sean Strickland, all of these guys hide behind these crazy things, but still none of them have shown up to the table to talk any business about anything to make anything actually happen in a real fight, a real spar,” Paul continued. “Whatever it is. So the offer still stands there. I want either one of those guys in MMA.”

A civil suit has been filed against former UFC star Nate Diaz stemming from a 2023 brawl on Bourbon Street.

Rodney Petersen, also known as ‘Not Logan Paul’ on social media, is the man who filed the suit according to a report from MMA Junkie who obtained a copy of the court documents on Friday. Petersen’s wife, Bobbie Petersen, is also listed as a co-petitioner.

Per the document, Petersen claims that Diaz initiated the brawl while he was attempting to be a peacemaker among the chaos.

The incident in question occurred in the early morning hours of April 22. Diaz attended a Misfits Boxing event earlier in the evening and got into a near-brawl with Chase DeMoor after chucking a water bottle at the influencer. Video of the street fight immediately went viral with one angle showing Petersen engaging with Diaz before being choked out by the MMA star and left unconscious in the middle of the street.

Diaz was arrested days later, but the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office chose not to pursue a second-degree battery charge against him.

Petersen and his wife are suing nate Diaz for ’emotional trauma’ and ‘loss of consortium’

As first reported by New Orleans TV station Fox 8, Petersen is seeking damages for mental, physical, and emotional trauma, as well as medical expenses and loss of income. Bobbie Petersen seeks damages for loss of consortium, services, affection, and care.

Since his run-in with Nate Diaz, Petersen has competed twice in influencer boxing matches, the first coming in January where he was knocked out in less than two minutes by Tristan Hamm under the Misfits Boxing banner. Eight weeks later, he returned for a fight with Cake Paul, a fight he won via unanimous decision.

As for Diaz, the TUF alumnus is scheduled to step into the boxing ring for a long-awaited rematch with another ex-UFC star — Jorge Masvidal. The bout is scheduled to go down on Saturday, June 1, and will be a co-promotion between Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing and Diaz’ Real Fight Inc.

Former two-time welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal may be gearing up for a June return to the boxing ring in a rematch against fellow UFC alum, Nate Diaz – however, the Miami native has confirmed plans to make an Octagon comeback before too long.

Masvidal, a former perennial contender at the welterweight limit and the promotion’s inaugural symbolic BMF champion, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in April of last year.

Suffering a fourth consecutive loss in a decision shutout defeat to Gilbert Burns, Florida veteran, Masvidal confirmed plans to end his tenure in the sport, following a decision loss to arch-rival, Colby Covington – and a pair of championship fight losses to former champion, Kamaru Usman.

“I’m definitely coming back to the UFC and get a W for my city, and my family, my kids and everybody that believes in me,” Jorge Masvidal explained during an interview with MMA Junkie. “I have to go back to the UFC.”

In his most recent win, Masvidal would turn in a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over the above-mentioned Diaz in the pair’s symbolic BMF title fight, during a clash at Madison Square Garden five years ago.

Nate Diaz gives '100% guarantee' he will complete his trilogy with UFC megastar Conor McGregor

Eight years removed from their last meeting, Nate Diaz is still confident that he’ll close out his trilogy with Irish megastar Conor McGregor.

During a brief interview with Give Me Sport, the ‘Stockton Samurai’ offered his personal guarantee that a third fight with the former two-division UFC champion will happen. Diaz also revealed a couple more names on his hit list.

“I 100% guarantee I’m gonna fight Conor McGregor again and I have a 100% guarantee that I’m probably going to fight Jake Paul again,” Diaz said. And Leon Edwards again. That’s my hit list.”

Stepping in on short notice at UFC 196, Nate Diaz handed McGregor his first career loss inside the Octagon, submitting the Irishman in the second round via rear-naked choke.

Five months later, they would run it back at UFC 202. This time, ‘Mystic Mac’ came out on top, scoring a majority decision after 25 minutes of back-and-forth action.

Immediately following their second scrap, fans were clamoring for a rubber match between the two. However, their careers took very different paths with McGregor moving on to become the UFC’s first-ever double champion, claiming the lightweight title less than a year after his viral 13-second KO of Jose Aldo to capture the featherweight crown.

McGregor then used his clout to cash in with a cross-over clash against legendary pugilist Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

Meanwhile, Nate Diaz went 2-2 in his last four fights with the promotion, though he did exit the company on a high note, earning a submission win over Tony Ferguson — his first time making an opponent tap out since the inaugural bout with McGregor — at UFC 279 in September 2022. Diaz has since stepped inside the squared circle for a showdown with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Diaz will return to the boxing ring on Saturday, June 1 for a scrap with former BMF titleholder Jorge Masvidal on pay-per-view.
