Late last year, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley campaigned for a fight against Nate Diaz at December’s UFC 219, but the promotion was unable to book the fight, nor did UFC President Dana White show much interest in it.

Because of that, Woodley underwent shoulder surgery to repair an injury he suffered in his last fight at UFC 214.

Now well into his recovery, Woodley is planning a comeback fight for this upcoming July and he feels as if the Diaz fight is still the most likely option for his next contest:

“I think that fight will happen,” Woodley told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “I think it will happen this year. I think it’s way more likely than people realize. There are conversations about Nate and I fighting in July. The UFC has offered Nate that fight. They just have to make it worth his while.

“I think I’ll fight Nate this year, and I think it will be my return to the Octagon. If I had to bet the house on it, that’s my next opponent.”

Diaz hasn’t competed since August 2016 when he suffered a majority decision loss to Conor McGregor in a rematch of their UFC 196 bout where Diaz shocked the world and submitted the Irishman with a rear-naked-choke.

Recently, the Stockton native implied that he’d be making a return later this year. There were also reports that surfaced earlier this week that indicated that Diaz was interested in saving March’s UFC 222, which lost its main event this past weekend after Max Holloway suffered an injury.

White, however, shut down those rumors, and Woodley said that he wouldn’t fight Diaz on such short notice:

“In four weeks? No. I wouldn’t fight him,” Woodley said. “If we’re fighting, I’m pretty sure it would have to be for my belt. Now, if they want me to fight him at a catchweight, not a title fight, I’m gonna have to drop to my knees and make a prayer to the most high for something like that.

“At this point in my career, if it’s a fight that’s not for my belt, I’m willing to step out of the box and do some different things.”

As far as the fight goes, however, Woodley thinks that Diaz would be a willing challenger – that is if he’s compensated, although “The Chosen One” also doesn’t think it’s a good fight for the Stockton native:

“Do I think Nate will fight me? Yes, for the right amount of money and the right time in history, I do,” Woodley said. “Is it a good fight for him? No. I’m a lot faster. I punch a lot harder. I can take him down. He’s not going to submit me. That said, it’s not a good fight for him. So, they have to make it up to him in dollars and cents.”

Would you have any interest in seeing Diaz challenge for the 170-pound title?

UFC President Dana White has reacted to the news that one of the biggest draws for the promotion wants to fight again.

Nate Diaz, who transitioned into a big star for the promotion after his fights with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, has gone on record by stating that he would like to fight soon.

How soon? UFC 222 to be exact. The younger Diaz brother got fight fans around the world talking earlier this week when he told LA Times’ Lance Pugmire that he is willing to step into the main event of UFC 222.

The promotion lost its original main event of UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway defending his title against Frankie Edgar at the PPV event. That fight has been put on delay yet again because of a leg injury that the champion suffered.

On Monday night, White said in a text message to Pugmire that Diaz is not an option. He also issued the following statement to the journalist that he said as recently as last week about Diaz fighting again soon:

“He [Diaz] doesn’t want to fight. We have made around five or six fights in the last six months, and he has turned them all down. [Eddie] Alvarez, [Justin] Gaethje, [Edson] Barboza and [interim lightweight champion Tony] Ferguson multiple times.”

White and other UFC officials are on a time schedule with this event as it’s slated to go down on March 3, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with the main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

MMA fighters are no strangers to feuding with other fighters, and more often than not, they’ll eventually settle their differences inside the cage.

But what happens when the bad blood stems from people outside of the sport?

In this article, we’ll take a look back at 10 past and present UFC stars who have had run-ins with famous celebrities, from movie stars to pop icons.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Jean Claude Van Damme

Martial arts movie icon Jean Claude Van Damme got on former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt’s bad side when he made a special guest appearance at Team Alpha Male last year.

JCVD began by taking the gym’s star-studded roster of fighters through a 40-minute stretching routine and then started demonstrating some his famed kicking techniques on Garbrandt.

”He started playing with me, acting like he was going to throw some kicks, and he started throwing hands like slapping at me.

“I was like ‘What the hell?’ Then he f—king kicked me with that hook kick right in the teeth and I was like ‘motherf—ker.’ I was pissed, I was so mad. I looked over at Rob, then I looked over at Jean and I was like ‘Rob, keep this motherf—ker away from me.’

“…I was like ‘I’m going to rip his head off, but it’s Jean-Claude what are you supposed to do?’ All of a sudden he looks at me, drops to his knees and starts crying and is like “My champion!” and starts crying like that, so I felt hella awkward.”

Thankfully, Garbrandt decided not to seek retribution and instead walked out the gym to cool off, but it’s safe to say he won’t be hanging out with Van Damme again anytime soon.

Nate Diaz could be the savior that the UFC needs for their upcoming pay-per-view event.

UFC President Dana White and other officials are scrambling for a main event for UFC 222.

It’s well known by now that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is unable to make his scheduled title defense against Frankie Edgar at the PPV event because of a leg injury that the champion suffered.

The promotion is no stranger to this problem as they have done on numerous times in the past. Whether it’s because of a suspension or injury. Diaz is also no stranger to stepping up and accepting a fight on short notice.

A perfect example of that is his first fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. As a result of this decision, it sparked a rivalry and made both of these fighters a lot of money.

Although Diaz may not be able to get the kind of cash he would get with a bout with McGregor, he is still a big name and can draw on PPV, which the promotion needs badly right now.

This leads us to LA Times’ Lance Pugmire noting on Twitter that Diaz is willing to step into the main event of UFC 222.

”The best option to fill in for the Max Holloway void at UFC 222 is Nate Diaz and he tells me he’s 100% interested,” Pugmire wrote. “Make it happen, UFC!”

Diaz has not been seen in the Octagon since his rematch with McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196.

Diaz has been biding his time since a third bout has been off the table with McGregor.

If you recall, just last month, Diaz took to his Instagram account to note that “May, June” time frame could be when he returns to fighting under the UFC banner.

Diaz also mentioned in that post that he was “sick of sitting around” and told fighters to “step your games up.”
