Last week, Nate Diaz took to social media to announce that he’d likely be making his long awaited return to action some time in mid 2018.

Upon this announcement, multiple lightweight contenders threw their names in the hat to land a potentially lucrative match with Diaz, perhaps the most notable being former 155-pound champion Eddie Alvarez.

Now, however, Alvarez doesn’t feel as if Diaz actually wants to fight, or rather he feels that the Stockton native only wants to fight one man:

“When he said something, I just thought it was like — it was the equivalent of a guy, there’s a bunch of fighters in a group and some tough guy yells out, ‘You’re all a bunch of b*tches!’ and walks away. He had to expect at least one guy to turn around and say something,” Alvarez said Monday on The MMA Hour. “And when you say that, you’ve kinda got to be ready to fight someone, or at least one of the guys that you called out.

“That was my thinking. We were all called a bunch of b*tches and the guy just walks away and he doesn’t say sh*t. It was really odd. I had a tough time understanding why he would even say anything. Why would you say something if you’re not willing to fight anybody? So that’s why I tweeted again, I kinda understood — this guy just wants to fight one guy. So if you just want to fight one guy, just kinda talk to that one guy. Don’t yell at a group of guys.

That one fighter Alvarez is referring to is Conor McGregor, the reigning UFC lightweight champion. Diaz and McGregor first did battle at UFC 196 in March 2016 when Diaz shocked the world and submitted the Irishman in the second round. Then, McGregor scored a majority decision victory in the rematch at UFC 202 in August 2016.

Continuing on, Alvarez said that Diaz is ‘bullsh*tting’ and that his ‘his ego’ doesn’t allow him to say that he only wants to fight McGregor:

“The more I think about it, the more I’m like: When Conor takes a break, Nate takes a break,” Alvarez continued. “Conor’s like, ‘I ain’t fighting until August,’ and Nate’s like, ‘Well, I ain’t fighting until July,’ or some sh*t. I guess his ego doesn’t let him say, ‘I just want to fight Conor.’ Just say it. Like, just be honest with everyone. If that’s who you want to fight, there’s nothing wrong with that. But don’t call everyone out if you don’t have any intention of fighting anybody.

“You’re getting a bunch of fans excited who you’re just bullsh*tting. If you don’t want any work from any lightweight in the division, then just don’t say anything to any of the lightweights in the division and everything will be cool. But when you say things like that, you should be ready to at least fight somebody.”

Do you agree with Alvarez, or do you expect Diaz to return and take on someone other than McGregor?

Although interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will take on top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of April 7’s UFC 223, the MMA community is still awaiting undisputed lightweight champ Conor McGregor’s next move.

Dana White and the UFC have remained coy on the subject, saying that the winner of Ferguson and Khabib would be ‘the champion’ but refusing to say that McGregor had been officially stripped of his title.

It’s prompted widespread speculation if McGregor will ever return to the octagon, and indeed many believe he may not return after making $100 million to box Floyd Mayweather last year, but in a recent interview with TMZ Sports (via Bloody Elbow), Khabib’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said his star would finish Ferguson, pick up a win over McGregor, and retire undefeated:

“We’re gonna beat Tony. We’re gonna stop Tony in three rounds. Khabib’s probably gonna retire undefeated because he’s gonna beat Conor, he’s gonna beat Tony, and he’s probably gonna say ‘Bye-bye.’”

As for just when he might meet McGregor after finally fighting Ferguson, Abdelaziz said Khabib would make McGregor wait to face him, just as he has the rest of the division:

“Khabib said he’s gonna make the motherf**ker wait,” said Abdelaziz. “That’s what he told me, word for word. ‘When I beat Tony, Conor’s got to get in line or he can go fight Nate Diaz or somebody and make some money.’ [Khabib] said he’s gonna make the division right. At the end of the day, he said Conor’s gonna have to beg.

Nurmagomedov turning down a fight with McGregor if he beats Ferguson is a highly unlikely scenario, however, as it would be the biggest fight in MMA right now and perhaps one of the biggest all-time, making any unnecessary waiting a ridiculous proposition – especially considering Nurmagomedov’s never-ending issues with injuries.

So even though it probably won’t happen, Abdelaziz insisted it will because McGregor should have fought his top client in Russia later this year like he said he was going to:

“On April 7, El Cucuy’s gonna get an ass-whooping and maybe Conor, maybe we’ll give him a crack. You see all his b**ch-ass coaches saying ‘Oh, Conor will knock out Khabib in the first round.’ Motherf**ker, you should have fought Khabib when you were supposed to fight him, when you said you wanted to fight him in Russia!”

Earlier this week, Nate Diaz lit up the MMA world when he took to his official Instagram account to imply that he’d be making his long awaited return to the Octagon in the coming months.

Upon the announcement, multiple lightweight contenders began to call out Stockton’s finest, with the most notable being former Bellator and UFC champion Eddie Alvarez.

The two have a bit of history and it’d certainly be an intriguing fight, but Alvarez took to his Twitter account today to reveal that Diaz isn’t interested in fighting him. “The Underground King” then proceeded to blast Diaz, labeling him as ‘fake’ and calling him a ‘f*cking dork’:

Diaz hasn’t competed since August 2016 when he dropped a majority decision to current 155-pound champion Conor McGregor at UFC 202. Prior to that, he had scored a shocking submission win over the Irishman in their first bout at UFC 196.

Alvarez, on the other hand, is coming off of a thrilling third-round knockout victory over former World Series of Fighting lightweight titleholder Justin Gaethje at UFC 218 last month.
