CagePotato PSA: Drinking + Driving + MMA = A Really Bad Idea

Here’s a weird story from the weekend out of Washington that we missed.

According to a story in the Bremerton Patriot, a drunk woman was choked unconscious while driving by a friend of her boyfriend, which would be commendable if he successfully prevented her from committing a DUI. Unfortunately he simply did it to be an asshole.

Apparently the trio had been out drinking and the girlfriend was nominated to drive home as she was the least intoxicated of the group.

Halfway to her boyfriend’s house where the men were staying for the night, the friend, who had been arguing with the driver about how loud and belligerent he was being while she was trying to concentrate on the road and who happened to be a heavyweight MMA fighter from California, thought it would be funny to choke the chick out. Fortunately for the three idiots, she was able to bring the vehicle to a complete stop before blacking out and pissing her pants as a result of the expertly-applied rear naked choke.

The woman, who police say was obviously intoxicated when they interviewed her at a friend’s house where she had gone to change her pissy pants, said that all she remembers is reaching for a knife she keeps in the car for protection with the intention of stabbing her attacker, but says she dropped the blade when she started to lose consciousness and began hitting the steering wheel to signal that she was in distress.

She contends that her choker ignored her tapout and continued to hold the sub until she went limp. Although the name of the fighter hasn’t been released, we have our suspicions who it was.

Anyway, the 33-year-old fighter was booked on second-degree assault charges and the boyfriend was also taken into custody for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Both denied the assault took place in spite of a puddle of urine in the drivers seat of the woman’s vehicle, a knife found on the driver’s side floor and her statement about the incident.

The driver was not charged as she was not seen driving by police and it was impossible for them to prove whether or not she was drunk when she was driving, or if she got blitzed at the friend’s house after calling 9-1-1.

How about testing the urine on the seat?

No word as to whether or not the accused will be extradited back to California to face a peer jury, but Joe Son says he’s ready to hear his case.

Glover Texeira to Face Ricco Rodriguez in Brazil November 27

According to a report from TATAME, Brazilian light heavyweight standout Glover Texeira will take on former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez on November 27 in the main event of a show titled “MMA Against Dengue.”

The event, which is being organized by the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro to educate residents about the deadly Dengue Fever, will take place at Pacificador Square, in Duque de Caxias.

(Hopefully for everybody’s sake the 2002 version of Ricco shows up to fight Texeira)

Where I live, we’re lucky if the local government organizes a flu shot clinic.

Undefeated in his past 13 outings, Texeira (15-2), who trained at The Pit with John Hackleman and Chuck Liddell before running into visa issues, has not lost since 2005 when he dropped a unanimous decision to Ed Herman at Sportfight 9. Since then the 32-year-old has finished all but one opponent, notching ten knockouts and two submissions in that span. His biggest win came against Thierry Rameau Sokoudjou under the WEC banner prior to the “African Assassin” making a name for himself in PRIDE.

Rodriguez (47-12) is winless in his last two bouts, but prior to the slide was 12-0 in as many fights, however the streak came against less than stellar competition. Plagued with addiction for a large portion of his career, the 34-year-old former Lion’s Den and Team Punishment fighter’s last notable win was nine years ago when he finished Randy Couture with a well-timed elbow at UFC 39 to win the vacant UFC heavyweight strap.

No other bouts have been announced for the card.

Juanito Ibarra Ordered to Pay CagePotato’s Parent Company $61,075 in Court Costs Related to 2009 Defamation Lawsuit

Cage Potato is pleased to announce that a troubling legal matter has been settled in our favor. After being named as a defendant in a June 2009 defamation lawsuit filed by MMA trainer Juanito Ibarra, we’ve finally been removed from the frivolous suit, and Cage Potato’s parent company has been awarded $61,075 in attorney fees and associated costs.

The lawsuit stemmed from a September 2008 PunchDrunkGamer.com interview with Tito Ortiz, in which Ortiz claimed that Ibarra had overcharged Quinton Jackson for his training camps, which led to Jackson severing professional ties with Ibarra. Like many other sites, Cage Potato quoted the interview in a blog post, and gave our own thoughts on the matter. Nine months later, Ibarra responded by filing suit against CagePotato.com — as well as Ortiz, Jackson, and over 20 web sites and writers — claiming that we damaged his reputation by publishing false information.

Fortunately, Ibarra wasn’t able to prove his claims in court. In September, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Zaven Sinanian granted a motion by our lawyers to dismiss CagePotato.com from the lawsuit. Our lawyers then filed a counter-suit to recoup attorney fees and other court costs, which was successful. On October 27th, a Los Angeles judge awarded Cage Potato’s parent company a judgment of $61,075.

Ortiz and Jackson are the only remaining defendants in Ibarra’s lawsuit; all of the other media outlets named in the suit have reportedly either settled with Ibarra or have been removed as defendants.

Because Ibarra never offered proof that Ortiz’s statements were false, and because CagePotato.com didn’t re-publish Ortiz’s quotes out of malice towards Ibarra, we always felt that the lawsuit was meritless and motivated by profit — a shakedown, essentially. We applaud the Los Angeles County court system for defending our right to report the news.

An injury to one of the UFC‘s bright young up-and-coming fighters has caused the UFC 140 card to be shifted.

The UFC announced that 22-year-old Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald has been injured and forced to with draw from UFC 140, which takes place on December 10 in Toronto. The 12-1 MacDonald had been slated to face Brian Ebersole, and it’s disappointing news that one of the best young Canadians in MMA won’t be able to fight on the next major card in Canada.

Ebersole will stay on the main card and face Claude Patrick, a welterweight from Toronto who’s 14-1 in his MMA career, including 3-0 in the UFC.

Patrick had been slated to face Rich Attonito on the UFC 140 preliminary card. Attonito is expected to stay on the card, and the UFC said a new opponent for Attonito will be named soon.

UFC 140 is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida. The other fights on the main card will be Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira an dMark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung.

Video Tribute: Joe Frazier, 1944-2011

Boxing legend Joe Frazier — whose aggressive style and notorious left hook earned him an Olympic gold medal in 1964 and an undisputed heavyweight title reign from 1970-1972 — died yesterday evening after a brief battle with liver cancer.

“The world has lost a great champion,” said Muhammad Ali, who fought Frazier three times in the ’70s, including their “Fight of the Century” first meeting (which Frazier won by unanimous decision) and their “Thrilla in Manila” rubber match (which Ali won by corner stoppage). “I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration. My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones,” Ali added.

From 1965-1981, Smokin’ Joe racked up a professional record of 32-4-1, with 27 wins by knockout; his only losses came against Ali and George Foreman. In recent years, Frazier spent his time running a boxing gym in Philadelphia, and trained his children Marvis and Jackie, who also competed professionally in boxing.
