Oscar De La Hoya was not a fan of last week’s (Sat. August 26, 2017) Mayweather vs. McGregor mega-fight, and he made that very clear on Twitter the night before the fight.
De La Hoya took to Twitter just hours before the event’s weigh-ins and delivered an expletive-filled rant against the event claiming that the fight disrespected the sport of boxing. He also went on to promote what he considers to be boxing’s ‘real fight’ in Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin later this month (September 16, 2017).
UFC President Dana White would respond to this Tweet by asking if De La Hoya was ‘snorting coke and drinking booze again’:
De La Hoya appeared on The MMA Hour earlier this week to react to his Twitter beef with White, claiming that he was simply defending his sport (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“Just trying to defend my sport,” De La Hoya said. “My sport gave me everything I have. My sport allowed me to win an Olympic gold medal, to win 10 world titles in six different weight classes. I’ve been boxing since I was 4 years old. I was a little fed up by what was taking place. Obviously emotions run through my veins and I was just defending the sport that I dearly love.”
As for White’s response, the UFC boss’ words did disappoint him, however, he will continue to defend his sport and promote Canelo vs. GGG:
“I just brush it off,” he said. “I never attacked him personally, whatsoever. I was obviously very disappointed by his words. But it is what it is. I’m gonna continue defending the sport of boxing, I’m gonna continue respecting the MMA. And move on to Sept. 16.”
“This is the fight that people have been asking for,” De La Hoya said.
De La Hoya then offered his thoughts on the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight, admitting he watched it despite his criticism, and noted that he believes Canelo Alvarez would have finished off the Irishman within one or two rounds:
“After seeing Saturday’s fight, Canelo probably would have knocked him out in one round or two rounds,” De La Hoya said. “Canelo is a knockout guy, he’s a guy who’s not gonna trick people into making a fight last longer than it should last.”
Oscar De La Hoya was openly critical of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s decision to face off with Conor McGregor on Saturday, and the Golden Boy Promotions CEO offered his two cents after Mayweather earned a 10th-round TKO victory over McGregor in Las Vegas.&nb…
Oscar De La Hoya was openly critical of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s decision to face off with Conor McGregor on Saturday, and the Golden Boy Promotions CEO offered his two cents after Mayweather earned a 10th-round TKO victory over McGregor in Las Vegas.
De La Hoya told reporters Monday he didn’t watch the fight and said Canelo Alvarez, who fights under the Golden Boy banner, would’ve knocked McGregor out inside of one round, per ESPN.com’s Arash Markazi:
During an interview onThe MMA Hourwith Ariel Helwani (h/t MMA Fighting’sMarc Raimondi), De La Hoya said he thought Mayweather had allowed McGregor to stay in the fight and win a few rounds early on.
“Because Mayweather let him. The first four of five rounds, he let him do that,” he said. “The punches are coming from different angles. It was a bit awkward to watch, actually.”
While many were impressed with McGregor’s ability to hold his own against one of the greatest boxers of his generation, it’s not as if Mayweather is in the prime of his career. He turned 40 in February and hadn’t fought in nearly two years when he stepped in the ring Saturday.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Mannix thought McGregor would have a much harder time against younger fighters:
Regardless of De La Hoya’s opinion, Mayweather and McGregor will both be laughing all the way to the bank when they receive their full share of the revenues from the fight.
ESPN.com’sDan Rafaelreported Mayweather and McGregor are guaranteed to earn at least $100 million and $30 million, respectively. Mayweather’s purse could climb to higher than $200 million, while McGregor could make upwards of nine figures when all is said and done.
Everyone seems to have an opinion about Conor McGregor following his 10th-round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last Saturday night. Everyone seems to have an opinion about Conor McGregor following his 10th-round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last Saturday night.
While many fans and pundits have applauded the UFC champion for his gutsy performance, others feel as though Mayweather started slowly to make McGregor look better than he actually was.
Perhaps the most vocal detractor of the fight, both before and after, is former Mayweather opponent and current Golden Boy Promotions frontman Oscar De La Hoya.
Not surprisingly, the boxing great had his own opinion of why McGregor looked as good as he did for the first four rounds of the fight, claiming that Mayweather actually ‘let him win rounds:
“Because Mayweather let him,” De La Hoya said. “The first four of five rounds, he let him do that. … The punches are coming from different angles. It was a bit awkward to watch, actually.”
“After seeing Saturday’s fight, Canelo probably would have knocked [McGregor] out in one round or two rounds,” De La Hoya said. “Canelo is a knockout guy, he’s a guy who’s not gonna trick people into making a fight last longer than it should last.
“MMA fighters are amazing fighters and I respect them dearly and boxing fighters are boxers. That’s just the bottom line.”
Do you agree with De La Hoya in that Mayweather ‘carried’ McGregor to make him look good?
Apparently, former boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t exactly approve of tomorrow’s (Sat., August 26, 2017) massive Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match Las Vegas, Nevada, something that’s far from a surprise considering he’s promoting next month’s anticipated Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin match-up. But in case you didn’t already know that, De La […]

But in case you didn’t already know that, De La Hoya took to social media earlier today before the official Mayweather vs. McGregor weigh-ins, going off the rails and saying the fighters were disrespecting boxing:
UFC prez Dana White was quick to respondto “The Golden Boy” with a smoldeering comeback, however, poking fun at De La Hoya’s recent troubles with alcohol and other, ahem, recreational drugs before smashing him with the brutal hastag #DeLaArum:
Ouch. The gloves are obviously off between two of the fight game’s most notorious promoters, something that became clear when White mixed in the last name of the promoter he’s raked over the coals the most – longtime boxing promoter Bob Arum.
White and the UFC are set to make a record-setting pay-per-view haul tomorrow night, and De La Hoya may be a bit miffed Canelo vs. GGG isn’t getting even near the amount of attention Mayweather vs. McGregor, a fight many hardcore boxing fans feel isn’t even a legitimate bout, is.
If you mess with the bull, however, it appears you get the horns. And they poke fun of your personal shortcomings online. Enjoy the fight tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen.
