Veteran boxing referee Joe Cortez revealed in an interview Monday that a recent sparring session between reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi got heated.

Cortez discussed the situation with Randy Gordon and Gerry Cooney on SiriusXM Boxing:

McGregor is in preparations for his first professional boxing match, which will be a clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26 in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

In the interview (h/t Anton Tabuena of SB Nation’s Bloody Elbow), Cortez said McGregor acquitted himself well against Malignaggi before things started getting out of hand:

“He handled himself pretty good with Paulie. That guy can pop. He was in there mixing it up a little bit with Paulie, and it was the real thing. They was no messing around. In fact, I had to stop the action, and I had to say, ‘All right, guys, you guys are a little out of control here, you gotta stop this.’ It got a little rough.”

Cortez also said he had to shut down the trash-talking between McGregor and Malignaggi while also trying to get them to have a clean sparring session:

“They were both roughing each other up, and I had to stop the action like in a regular fight. They were holding too much, they were trying to punch each other. I mean, it got a little bit out of control where I had to call ‘Time!’

“[I said], ‘All right, guys, you gotta stop this right now. I want a good clean round. Give me sportsmanlike conduct. Understand? I don’t want to take any points from either one of you. Do you understand?’ I looked at them, and they said, ‘OK, all right.’ And I said, ‘Time in.'”

Malignaggi boasts a 36-8 career record as a professional boxer, and he is a former welterweight and junior welterweight champion.

According to Sky Sports (h/t BoxingScene.com), Malignaggi has been impressed by what he has seen from McGregor: “It makes me respect McGregor to see his work ethic that he’s put into the training camp. Seeing him work hard every day and see that he’s really determined to upset the odds.”

The 29-year-old McGregor is 21-3 in his career as an MMA fighter and became the first UFC fighter to hold two titles at the same time (featherweight, lightweight).

He is easily among the top draws in combat sports, and his star power is undeniable. But he is stepping into an unfamiliar realm.

Mayweather is a perfect 49-0 in his boxing career, and despite being 11 years McGregor’s senior, his vast amount of experience makes him a significant favorite heading into the fight.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor continues his preparation to take on, arguably, the greatest boxer of all time in his own backyard.

Next month on August 26th, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada will play host to the biggest combat sporting event of all time. McGregor, a proven knockout artist in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), will make his professional boxing debut against the undefeated 49-0 Floyd Mayweather Jr. in attempt to pull off the most shocking upset in recent sports memory.

The pair took place in a four stop World Tour earlier this month to promote the bout, in which they unloaded a ton of controversial trash-talk against one another. After getting the promotional side of thigs done for the time being, “Notorious” and “Money” can now focus on their physical preparations for the fight.

McGregor has been busy getting in rounds over in Las Vegas with a variety of training partners. Recently, the Irishman decided to bring on former two-weight boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi as a sparring partner. The 155-pound champ posted the following picture of he and Malignaggi sparring, and the UFC mega-star can be seen showboating with his hands behind his back as his adversary stands in front of him:

Malignaggi took to Twitter himself to comment on his sparring sessions with “The Notorious One,” and although he was reluctant to give any details on how the session went, he did note that they were ‘good rounds’ and that he looked forward to continuing to help McGregor prepare for Mayweather:

Conor McGregor has made yet another move in regards to his preparation for his scheduled boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. next month (Sat. August 26, 2017).

The UFC lightweight champ is set to make his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest off all time in undefeated 49-0 boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. The highly-anticipated superfight just wrapped up a four stop World Tour to promote the match-up, in which McGregor and Mayweather got to show off their gifts of gab as they engaged in a slew of trash-talk on stage in front of fight fans.

Serving as an analyst on the Showtime pre and post shows for the first three stops of the World Tour was none other than former two-weight boxing champ Paulie Malignaggi, who had been unsure if he was going to get the opportunity to be a part of “The Notorious One’s” training camp for the Mayweather fight.

On yesterday’s (Mon. July 17, 2017) episode of The MMA Hour, however, Malignaggi revealed that he now is set to head out to Las Vegas tomorrow and begin helping Team McGregor prepare for August 26th (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“We’ve discussed a couple potential things, but I don’t know (how long I’ll be out there), it’ll depend on them,” Malignaggi said. “I’ve always been in camp that’s been my training camp. I’ve never been in somebody else’s training camp. Even when I was a prospect and I helped champions get ready for their fights, it was mostly at home where I came up in Gleason’s Gym in New York, where there’s so many champions training there.

“A lot of times, I sparred with them a lot during their training camps in Gleason’s, but I was never a guy who was brought into camp as a sparring partner where I had to leave my house, where I had to leave home.”

Malignaggi admitted that when he first caught wind that McGregor had obtained his boxing license he attempted to get under the Irishman’s skin in hopes of landing a big-money bout against the MMA superstar. Now Malignaggi has since retired from active competition and instead look forward to having a ‘knock’ with McGregor privately inside the gym:

SHOWTIME Sports

“When Conor got his boxing license, all the boxers looked at it like, ‘wow, this is a big paycheck here, and it’s a guy who’s probably a little bit (more) limited than your basic world-class boxer,’ so everybody’s trying to get in there. So me, using my trash-talking ability that I have, me knowing that I’m one of the better known fighters in the business, I kind of put myself at the forefront,” Malignaggi said.

“I tried to talk a little bit of trash and get under his skin and try to see if he would take the bait. So the trash talk was done about six months ago, I was looking to get the fight.”

“I’ve since lost my last fight and retired, so that’s actually out the window,” he continued. “But I think that basically what they’re looking at and what he’s talking about is probably the trash talking way back then, and yeah, we’re going to have a knock in the gym.”

“But listen, from a fighter’s perspective, you have in a knock in the gym anyway. Even if you’re best friends with the guy you’re sparring, you’re still going to have a knock in there. That’s just the way sparring goes, especially at a world-class championship level in the gym at sparring. I’ve never been a part of a training camp where sparring was light.”
