Chuck Liddell’s Downfall: The Life-Changing Knockouts That Propelled Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson to Stardom

The knockouts of Chuck Liddell by Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson were pivotal moments in mixed martial arts history. Altering the careers of the fighters involved and also marking significant shifts in the UFC landscape.

How Knocking Out Chuck Liddell Transformed the Careers of Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson

On May 26, 2007, at UFC 71, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson faced Chuck Liddell in a highly anticipated rematch. Their first encounter had occurred in PRIDE in 2003, where Rampage defeated Liddell via TKO. At UFC 71, Liddell was defending his light heavyweight title and seeking redemption.

However, Rampage ended the fight quickly, knocking out Liddell just 90 seconds into the first round with a powerful hook followed by ground strikes. This victory crowned Jackson as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and marked a turning point in his career, bringing him mainstream recognition. The fight also elevated the UFC’s popularity, with extensive media coverage and increased attention from mainstream sports outlets.

On September 6, 2008, at UFC 88: Breakthrough, Rashad Evans faced off against Chuck Liddell in Atlanta, Georgia. Liddell was considered a favorite going into the fight due to his legendary status and striking power. However, Evans delivered one of the most shocking knockouts in MMA history during the second round.

At 1:51 of Round 2, Evans landed a perfectly timed overhand right that knocked Liddell unconscious instantly. This victory earned Evans the “Knockout of the Night” bonus and propelled him into title contention. For Liddell, however, this loss marked a decline in his career, as it was one of several knockout defeats that followed.

Speaking with each other on a podcast, Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson explained how knocking out UFC icon Chuck Liddell had transformed their lives. Evans explained:

“Once I started to get on the scene, started to experience that life and hang out, you know, I lost my mind for a little bit. You know what I’m saying? Because it’s such a different way of living. I was working as a security guard in a hospital, so going from that to being able to buy what you want, have all kinds of different experiences—you know what I’m saying?—it kind of took me off a little bit.”

Jackson added:

“Yeah, it’s a different thing. My thing is, I couldn’t get used to it. Now I’m hanging out with my friends, and I’ve got dudes trying to buy me drinks every time I go out. That was the part I couldn’t get used to.”

Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson are set to have a boxing match later this year.

Anthony Smith Calls UFC Legend Two-Faced in Heated Rant "Week Before They Were Calling Him a Cuck"

The ongoing feud between UFC light heavyweight Anthony Smith and former MMA champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson has escalated, with both fighters exchanging sharp remarks in recent days.

Anthony Smith Calls Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson Two-Faced

Anthony Smith recently criticized Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, accusing him of creating a toxic environment for fighters on his Jaxxon Podcast. He stated:

“You bring fighters on, you s–t on them. It happened to me you brought me on you’re super cool to me. I had a good time. I love Rampage, he’s my favorite fighter. You bring me on I have an amazing time and several months later you’re on there with Dillashaw making fun of me. It’s their thing, that’s what they do. They are just not great to fighters, they did the same s–t to Ian Garry when he was supposed to go on the show, and the week before they were calling him a cuck. I don’t like that.”

In response, Jackson fired back on social media, posting a video where he bluntly told Smith to “shut his mouth,” claiming that Smith had no idea what he was talking about.

Anthony Smith is a US-born fighter who competes in the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division. Smith began his professional MMA career in 2008, fighting in regional promotions before joining Strikeforce and later the UFC. Despite early setbacks, he gained prominence after moving to the light heavyweight division in 2018, earning notable wins against Rashad Evans, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, and Alexander Gustafsson. Smith also challenged Jon Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in 2019 but fell short via unanimous decision. Over his career, he has earned multiple Performance of the Night bonuses for his exciting finishes.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson is a retired American MMA legend and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Jackson rose to fame during his tenure with Pride FC in Japan, where his aggressive style and charismatic personality made him a fan favorite. After transitioning to the UFC, he unified the Pride and UFC Light Heavyweight titles by defeating Dan Henderson in 2007. Known for his iconic slams and knockout power, Jackson’s career highlights include victories over legends like Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. Outside of MMA, he has also appeared in movies and professional wrestling.

While Anthony Smith has voiced concerns over the treatment of fighters on platforms like the JAXXON Podcast, Jackson has defended his approach, emphasizing his intentions to maintain authenticity. The escalating feud between Anthony Smith and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson continues to create tension.

Rashad Evans & Rampage Jackson Eye Boxing Match In 2025

Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson are seemingly set to reignite their storied rivalry — this time under the bright lights of the squared circle.

The two former UFC light heavyweight champions first collided at UFC 114 in May 2010 following their fiery stint as opposition coaches on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). That night, “Suga” emerged victorious, earning a dominant unanimous decision.

Whispers of a boxing showdown between Evans and Jackson began swirling months ago, with ONE Championship even showing interest in bringing the fight to life. Although those plans never materialized, the tides have shifted. Now, 15 years after their first clash, the former rivals are closer than ever to stepping into the ring for a long-awaited rematch.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, “Suga” revealed that he has already kicked off his training camp for the prospective bout, tentatively slated for February 2025, likely in Florida. The New Yorker also expressed his enthusiasm about rekindling his rivalry with “Rampage.”

“Boxing is something I’m a huge fan of and there’s nothing better than getting another chance to fight Rampage,” Evans said. “Rampage is in pretty good shape right now. He was getting ready for Shannon ‘The Cannon’ [Briggs] so he’s in pretty good shape. I want to get a chance to do it again with it.”

Evans emphasized that while the bad blood between him and Jackson is a thing of the past, their upcoming boxing showdown promises to be fiercely competitive — albeit with a friendly edge.

“With this fight, it’s fun because there’s not that anger-animosity, but at the same time, it’s still competitive. It’s still competitive like if he sees me looking a certain kind of way [he’ll say] ‘Hey, I see you getting ready, you’re looking pretty good’ and I’ll see him hitting the mitts or something like that and I’m like okay, he’s getting ready. It’s still the friendly competition and as the fight gets closer, all the sh*t talking’s going to come back. So it’s going to be fun.”

Evans has made only one return to competition since leaving the UFC in June 2018, claiming a commanding unanimous decision victory over Gabriel Checco at an Eagle FC event in January 2022.

Meanwhile, “Rampage” has remained inactive since December 2019, when he endured a tough loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator 237.

Quinton Jackson recently shared how he cleverly exposed a spy allegedly sent by Jon Jones to his fight camp by faking an injury to flush them out.

Jackson took on Jones for the light heavyweight title at UFC 135 in September 2011, but his efforts fell short as he was submitted in the fourth round. Despite being thoroughly outmatched in the bout, “Rampage” later criticized Jones for his fighting style and his tendency to extend his fingers during exchanges, a habit that has unintentionally resulted in eye pokes for several of his opponents.

However, in the lead-up to their fight, Jackson stirred the MMA world by claiming that “Bones” had planted a spy in his camp to gather intel on him. To test his suspicions, Jackson fabricated a story and let the word out that he had a hand injury…

Jackson on Jones Reportedly Planting A Spy: ‘It was Somebody That Worked For MusclePharm’

During a recent episode of his JAXXON Podcast, “Rampage” revealed that Jones was allegedly in contact with someone from his supplement sponsor, MusclePharm, to spy on his fight camp. The former UFC light heavyweight champion recounted how he began to suspect that his every move was being monitored, so he devised a plan.

He faked an injury and shared the news only with his Team Wolfslair, yet somehow, the information still leaked to the public.

“He had a spy in my camp; it was somebody that worked for MusclePharm that was cool with him,” Jackson said. “He would come there and watch me train and stuff, and I don’t know—I can’t remember how I found out that somebody was watching me. Maybe some sh*t he was saying online, so I faked the injury, and I didn’t tell anybody. I told my tight team, ‘I think Jon Jones has a spy in my camp,’ so I faked the injury and didn’t say anything, and then it got out in the press.”

In an interview with Yahoo! Sports in August 2011, Jackson revealed that just hours after planting the fake news, his manager received a call from then-UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, who was eager to find out what had happened.

As Jackson anticipated, the response was swift and telling: Silva mentioned that Jones’ manager, Malki Kawa, had reached out. Although Jackson has never produced any concrete evidence to support his claims, “Bones” once playfully admitted to planting a spy in his opponent’s camp.
