UFC Should Have Alternates Ready In Big Fights

CDJ3AB0WEAAp5_U

Although the UFC is beyond ecstatic with Conor McGregor (19-2) facing Nate Diaz (18-10), the path to getting that fight was not easy. As fans know, Rafael Dos Anjos had to pull out of his title fight with McGregor with a broken foot. Fighters pulling out of big fights have happened one too many times in the past. Moving forward, the UFC should  book alternates when announcing big fights of a main event in case one of the fighters pull out.

The UFC was scrambling all day on February 23rd to find a replacement for the Irishman. Numerous names included Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Urijah Faber, etc. Some of the fighters declined the offer to fight McGregor, while others were already booked for future fights.

This scenario of fighters pulling out of big fights has happened way too many times. Just recently, Cain Velasquez pulled out of his title fight with Fabricio Werdum earlier this month. Subsequently, Werdum pulled out as well and the pay-per-view event was moved to Fox Sports 1. Jose Aldo had to pull out of UFC 189 with a rib injury against Conor McGregor. Dan Henderson also had to pull out of his title fight with Jon Jones at UFC 151 back in 2012. UFC 151 was then scrapped entirely and became the first cancelled card in the company’s history.

The UFC did get what they want in McGregor vs. Diaz but what if they did not? What if McGregor was pulled from the card entirely? These are things the UFC would not want to see. The easiest solution to avoid these scenarios is to have an alternate fighter signed and ready to fight in the main event in case one of the two fighters pull out.

This is no different than any wrestling or Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament. Events like those have alternates ready in case one of the competitors cannot compete or get injured in the middle of the tournament.

Critics might say that the UFC should instead “beef” up their cards by providing fans with good fights from top to bottom so that a card is not cancelled or relegated to Fox/Fight Pass. However, it is tough for the UFC to provide fans with big names consistently since there are more than 540 fighters on the UFC roster.

Fans have to realize that the promotion is in a period of time where it is trying to become more mainstream by gaining a wider presence on Fox, expansion of UFC Fight Pass, and introduction of raw and potential talents. Zuffa’s goal is to provide as much content as they can to sports fans. In return, we can only hope that we can see more fighters gain stardom like Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey has.

No matter what kind of fighters you have on a card, Conor McGregor will dominate the entire event. The same could be said with Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, or Jon Jones. Fans expect to see these fighters on the card when they first purchase tickets. When one of the fighters pulls out, the entertainment value immediately drops. An alternate would ensure that the card is not juggled up or in danger of being cancelled.

An alternate would also be a much smoother transition for the UFC brass when a fighter pulls out. When Rafael Dos Anjos pulled out, the MMA community was in a panic storm. Countless fighters wanted to fight McGregor. There were numerous rumors and false statements being made. Dana White was scrambling to find someone to fight McGregor after Aldo and Edgar turned down the bout. An alternate or fighter on standby would eliminate all that and would save the PR team a lot of trouble.

The UFC did have a “contingency plan” at UFC 189 when it was first reported that Aldo had a rib injury. In jeopardy of losing the big fight, Chad Mendes was made an alternate two weeks before the fight in case Aldo had to pull out. He eventually did.

The UFC should adopt this policy they had at UFC 189 moving forward with big fights that feature fighters like McGregor, Rousey, Jon Jones, or any highly anticipated fight to avoid catastrophe.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor experienced deja vu in the lead up to next weekend’s (Saturday March 5) UFC 196 main event. With almost identical timing as Jose Aldo with his injured rib before UFC 189, lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos backed out of the UFC 196 pay-per-view with a broken foot. The lottery of who would fight McGregor in the big money spot was underway.

Eventually it would be Stockton bad boy Nate Diaz that got the nod to fight Conor McGregor, but the rabble surrounding ‘The Notorious’ continues. UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson recently called McGregor a ‘turtle’ and a ‘bitch,’ claiming he’d make it ‘red panty night’ for the outspoken Irishman if they ever fought.

USATSI_8990645

‘El Cucuy’ is riding a red hot seven fight win streak at present, and most recently submitted Edson Barboza in a classic brawl last December. Scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in a UFC on FOX 19 clash, Ferguson took to periscope to answer some fan questions last night, and it wasn’t long before the inevitable subject of McGregor was raised. Here’s how Ferguson responded:

The truth is that nobody knows what’s next for McGregor if he beats Diaz, and that pretty much puts the top end of two weight divisions on hold. Would he face dos Anjos for the lightweight belt, or perhaps the featherweight strap he won against Jose Aldo needs to be defended at some point in the coming months? Don’t even get started on the fact McGregor called out Robbie Lawler at UFC 200.

Whatever the case, ‘The Notorious’ continues to be hot property in multiple weight classes in the UFC, but for how long? Is it only a matter of time before his alleged weakness of wrestling and submission defense is exposed, or will McGregor continue his meteoric rise unbeaten?

Rafael dos Anjos Calls Out Conor McGregor For Not Taking Donald Cerrone Fight

Nate Diaz is taking Rafael dos Anjos’ place at UFC 196 across the octagon from Conor McGregor. Donald Cerrone was one of several competitors who wanted the fight, but the UFC chose Nate Diaz to fight McGregor. Dos Anjos took to Twitter and blasted McGregor for not fighting Cerrone.

“Why Gregor didn’t pick Cerrone to fight!? He loves some out of shape with 10 days notice like Mendez. Want 2 belts? Gotta beat me.”

UFC President Dana White recently commented on rumors of Diaz currently being out-of-shape, saying Diaz had been training for a triathlon prior to the fight announcement, and he’s in “phenomenal shape right now.” Diaz and McGregor are scheduled to fight at UFC 196 on March 5th, and Las Vegas oddsmakers have McGregor favored to win.

Anjos is expected to return from his foot injury in time for UFC 200 in July.

Conor McGregor is at it again.

As everyone knows by now, UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his fight with McGregor in the main event of UFC 196 with a foot injury. The UFC called several fighters to see if they wanted to fight McGregor. Frankie Edgar and Donald Cerrone was two of many that wanted the fight. However, the UFC chose Nate Diaz to fight McGregor.

McGregor addressed the fighters that called him out for a fight at Wednesday’s UFC 196 press conference.

“There were many options, but in reality, many people pretended to want this fight until the fight actually presented itself,” McGregor said.

“Frankie didn’t want to shut up, but then when he was given a phone call and a date, then he hasn’t been seen or heard since,” he said. “Jose also! Jose was in camp, apparently preparing in case Dos Anjos pulls out, then all of a sudden Dos Anjos pulls out with his bruised foot, and Jose is not fit!”

McGregor compared the fighters who called him out and then turned down the fight once the UFC called them as sore vaginas.

“They always pull. They always run,” McGregor said. “They always make out like they want it, but really they don’t want it. I was expecting it.”

“They all have sore vaginas lately, it’s crazy,” McGregor said. “There’s something going on, I don’t know. Dos Anjos broke his foot and his vagina in the same damn day. Same with Edgar. I couldn’t believe the odds of that to happen.”

“Everyone wanted it, then everyone didn’t want it. At least Nate was engaging in the conversation, everyone else flat out went running. Instantly he became the front runner.”

McGregor took a shot at dos Anjos for his foot injury (broken foot) and said that he thinks it looks like a bruised foot, not a broken one.

“I looked at the picture that Dos Anjos put up and it’s a bruise,” McGregor said. “I heard ice works wonders.”

“Dos Anjos has a bruise on his foot. Did you see it? It’s a bruise! Ice. Ibuprofen. If I jumped under an X-ray, the doctor would slap me and say, ‘What are you doing kid? Get out of here, stop this.’”

As big as the fight between McGregor and dos Anjos was, McGregor is not as interest it in now. McGregor looked back on history and compared his feud with Anjos to his feud with Jose Aldo as both men turned down the original fight with him.

“It’s hard to commit to Dos Anjos again,” he said. “The same with Jose, he pulled. It took him two goes to build up the courage. Hopefully maybe it could take Dos Anjos two gos to build up the courage. But when you pull out with an injury like that, a bruise on the foot, there’s not much I can do to help you, to bring you back into the mix. It does change a little bit.”

UFC 196 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 5 and airs on PPV, FOX Sports 1, and UFC Fight Pass.

Wow, they say Conor McGregor is the king of trash talk, wait until you get a load of this guy. We know ‘The Notorious’ can get under people’s skin, but damn…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will no longer be facing the lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, after the Brazilian broke his foot in training. This opened the door to a day of speculation about McGregor’s replacement opponent, before Nate Diaz was finally booked in at welterweight, but it’s once again opened the door to even more discussions about the Irish star.

Mixed martial arts promotion has taken a very different form in the UFC lately thanks to McGregor, but he still uses the same old formula as guys like Tito Ortiz utilized to help promote fights. The difference now is that a lot of money can be put behind the selling of big names, but this in turn mounts the pressure on the athlete to perform. You only need to reference Ronda Rousey’s fall from grace to verify that statement.

Conor McGregor 197

One fighter that is seriously unimpressed by McGregor is lightweight contender Tony Ferguson. As much as ‘The Notorious’ likes to run his mouth to help promote fights, he also uses it as a great tool to frustrate opponents. For ‘El Cucuy’ though, this is a scumbag move.

Check out what the streaking Ferguson told our good friends over at Submission Radio this week:

MMA: UFC 177-Ferguson vs Castillo

Tony Ferguson on ‘Little B*tch’ McGregor: “I’ll give him his Red Panty night if he really f**king wants it”

“This dude claims to be a master of movement but he’s a turtle on his back. Chad Mendes, if he had any kind of conditioning or patience, he would have passed the guard and pulled it off. I see McGregor, he can’t learn wrestling overnight. I see his movement, he looks predictable. But that’s not the fight I have. Khabib Nurmagomedov, this 22-0 guy is gonna go down. 22-1 is what his record is going to be after this, and then every single fighter after this when I put that picture up with his face all cut up from my elbows, nobody’s gonna want to sign on the dotted line. I’ll probably have a nice little vacation.”

Although he’s booked in to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in the undefeated wrestler’s return to the octagon, Tony Ferguson clearly has a bee in his bonnet about Conor McGregor. He was then asked if McGregor’s win over Aldo was impressive. Here’s how he answered….
