As the first generation of MMA greats exit the sport with the recent retirements of Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell, the time is coming for the next generation of superstars to separate themselves from the pack. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has already begun to make his case for greatness, but what other fighters will rise alongside him?

With his promising performances early in his career, some have already begun to label 22-year-old Canadian Rory MacDonald as the next Georges St-Pierre. While MacDonald still has a long way to go before he matches St-Pierre’s accomplishments, he has all the tools needed to achieve greatness.

A decade from now, these are 15 fighters who will be looked back on as some of the greatest the sport has ever seen.

Care for some recent stats on UFC’s finished fights and those that went the distance?

Of the main card fights of the last three UFC events, namely 132, 133 and Live 5, nine ended by stoppage compared to five that went the distance and into the judges’ scorecards.

And of the three main main events (not “co-main events”), two ended by finishes: UFC 133’s Rashad Evans’ TKO over Tito Ortiz and UFC Live 5’s Chris Lytle’s guillotine choke against Dan Hardy.

Finished fights are in the majority lately!

If we are to include all the preliminary fights of the last three UFC events, it’s an even-steven at 17-all. But isn’t it gratifying to note that finishes happened where it mattered more? In the main cards where the stakes are higher and the hype is stronger?

Here’s an honor roll of the finishers of the main cards of each of the last three events, the fighters who spared us fans the agony of hearing from the judges.

At UFC 134, UFC middleweight champion Anderson “the Spider” Silva will be making his return to Brazil as he takes on Japan’s Yushin Okami.

Okami was the last person to defeat Silva, albeit by a controversial disqualification.

Silva was disqualified because he threw an illegal up kick while Okami was on the ground.

Anything can happen in MMA, and on any given night, any fighter can be defeated.  But I believe Silva will win this bout and remain champion.

Here are some reasons why.

Rumors have been swirling that the recently released Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem is on the verge of signing an exclusive deal with the UFC.

Although it is yet to be confirmed, Overeem has expressed interest in joining the world’s largest MMA promotion when the UFC’s parent company, Zuffa, purchased Strikeforce earlier this year.

Unable to continue on in the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament following a win over Fabricio Werdum, Overeem was subsequently released from Strikeforce. Fellow Golden Glory teammates were also released by both promotions under Zuffa due to a row between the Dutch camp and the company.

However, it appears that Overeem’s contract may have some holes that would make his debut in the UFC a reality.

As speculation continues, here are six possible fights that “the Reem” may take if his dream of fighting in the UFC comes true.

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is the greatest mixed martial artist on planet Earth today, and quite possibly of all-time. Of this I have no doubt. And I’m honestly not convinced there’s anyone in the world today who could beat him.

So why, then, am I writing an article about guys who have the tools to dethrone The Spider?

Well, for one, no one is unbeatable. Anyone who follows MMA (or sports in general) knows that anything can happen. Two, while I wouldn’t put money on anyone defeating Silva, there are some guys who because of their physical talents or fighting styles do measure up favorably against The Spider.

Here are those five guys. A couple ground rules: I only considered middleweights, light heavyweights and welterweights who could move up to middleweight (guess who that is!), because those are the three categories of fighter who could actually meet Silva in a cage. In addition, given the fluid world of MMA promotions and the drawing power of the UFC, I considered guys from across the sport, not just those currently working in the Octagon.
