Video of the Day: Cung Le and JCVD Star in ‘Dragon Eyes’ [TRAILER]

(Van Damme was convinced that the man before him was in fact Cung Le, no matter how much he pleaded that he was “just the delivery guy.”)

Somewhere in between having his nose turned into delicious mashed potatoes by Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139 and accepting a match with Rich Franklin at UFC 148, it looks like Cung Le managed to squeeze in another movie to add to his list of credentials that includes such films as Fighting, Pandorum, and Tekken. Being the only one of the above titles I have seen, I can honestly say that Pandorum wasn’t half bad, and neither was Le in it. That’s more than anyone say for Rampage Jackson’s film career thus far.

In any case, Le’s newest entry is called Dragon Eyes, and despite it’s ridiculously cliche title, it looks like it could actually be a pretty damn entertaining flick. Co-starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Peter Weller, and JCVD film veteran Kristopher Van Varenberg, Dragon Eyes hits stores on April 9th.

Join us after the jump for the action-packed trailer.

I counted 3 Superman punches, 47 different kicks (including some Sweet Chin Music at 1:10), 18 war cries, and possibly the sweetest belly to back suplex that has ever been captured on film (:58). And with Le’s Shan Shou prowess and Van Damme’s well documented affinity for spin kicks, how can this movie not be a literal tornado of awesomeness? I’m surprised they didn’t bring the sets down with their combined centrifugal forces alone.

UFC News: Clay Guida vs. Gray Maynard and Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le Are Official

Perennial UFC lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Gray Maynard will square off in the main event of UFC on FX 3, while former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin is set to take on Cung Le at UFC 148, the UFC announced today

Guida vs. Maynard was heavily rumored to take place at UFC 145, but the bout never came to fruition for that card. Instead, the matchup will be a five-round affair this summer.

“The Carpenter” Clay Guida is coming off of a “Fight of the Night” bout against Benson Henderson at the UFC’s inaugural FOX event in November, despite a losing effort.

Meanwhile, “The Bully” Gray Maynard lost a rubber match in devastating knockout fashion against then reigning lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 136.

The winner will immediately be catapulted back into title contention, while the loser will have a long road ahead to be considered anything more than a divisional gatekeeper.

Franklin was scheduled to meet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133, but “Little Nog” suffered a shoulder injury close to fight time and the bout ended up being scrapped.

This will be Franklin’s first bout in nearly a year-and-a-half, with his last outing being a unanimous decision loss to former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at UFC 126.

His next opponent, Cung Le, a former Strikeforce middleweight champion, was unsuccessful in his UFC debut against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139. “The Human Highlight Reel” lost by second round TKO.

UFC on FX 3 is set to take place at Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 22nd with a venue to be announced, while UFC 148 goes down on July 7th and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The business of making fights cannot be as easy as one thinks. It’s more than just a simple matter of that which is most basic: logistics and timing.

It’s also about imagining a fight so totally that the matchmaker can see real drama in the destruction, and then make a fight that delivers on the promise of his imagination.

In other words, it’s about the business of predicting those fights that will yield the greatest fireworks show, time and time again.

But as anyone who has followed the sport for even a short amount of time knows, many is the fight that was not made, no matter how great it promised to be.

When Quinton “Rampage” Jackson lost to Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight championship, he was a hungry contender.

When he lost to Ryan Bader at UFC 144, Jackson officially became a part of the highest order of “old guard” ranks in the UFC.

The “old guard” consists of fighters who have earned their living, and even fortunes, off of their reputations as elite MMA fighters, but no longer possess the ability to work upwards towards further glory.

Sure, they still win big fights, but the “old guard” is a generation of fighters who no longer have to sacrifice to satisfy their ends.

They are actually a noble and wise warrior class who’s gate-keeping responsibilities protect the upper treasures of MMA glory from uninspired hot-shots.

Five Fighters We’d Like to See Step in For Mike Kyle Against Gegard Mousasi March 3

(“Who wants some?”)

When it was announced yesterday that Mike Kyle sustained an injury, forcing him out of his planned Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey main card bout with Gegard Mousasi, speculation arose that Mousasi would likely be scratched from the event. If the UFC brass would sign off on a crossover bout between Gegard and one of its fighters, the fight could be salvaged and Mousasi could get an upgrade opponent in the process.

Check out who we’d like to see step up on three week’s notice to take on “The Dreamcatcher.”

When it was announced yesterday that Mike Kyle sustained an injury, forcing him out of his planned Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey main card bout with Gegard Mousasi on March 3, speculation arose that Mousasi would likely be scratched from the event. If the UFC brass would sign off on a crossover bout between Gegard and one of its fighters, the fight could be salvaged and Mousasi could get an upgrade opponent in the process.

Check out who we’d like to see step up on three week’s notice to take on “The Dreamcatcher.”

Glover Teixeira:

The 32-year-old Brazilian juggernaut is now living stateside again after a few years of working through visa issues in Brazil and is negotiating a contract with the UFC. Why not give him a litmus test to see if he’s ready for the big show with a fight against one of the best from the promotion’s feeder organization?

Rich Franklin:

Franklin is a guy who has stepped up on short notice time and time again for the UFC and he has expressed his desire to take one more run at the title, so why not give him a fellow former champion to give him the opportunity to attempt the climb back into contention? His KO win over Chuck Liddell and the fact that he’s only  been finished once since 2007 and there is some debate as to the legality of the blows that prompted the referee to stop the fight, shows he’s up for the challenge if the UFC will throw him a bone.

Lyoto Machida:

Machida needs an emphatic win to rebound from his devastating loss to Jon Jones and he has all of the tools to beat Mousasi wherever the fight goes. He doesn’t like taking last-minute fights without Anderson Silva money being thrown at him, but coming off of a loss may have lowered his negotiating power a bit.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua:

The question is, who do you match “Shogun” up with at this point? Jones and Evans are tied up, Davis just lost a one-sided fight and he has already fought (and most would agree, beaten) Machida twice. Another fight with Dan Henderson makes sense, at least from a fan’s standpoint, but it probably won’t happen, so why not have him take on Mousasi? That’s a fight we’d all pay to see.

Phil Davis:

Davis is a guy who is good, but will likely never be good enough to wear a UFC strap, at least not with the talent pool that sits ahead of him in the UFC rankings, so moving him to Strikeforce would open up new possibilities for him. Step one in reinventing him under the SF banner would be seeing where his skills match up. Mousasi would provide the perfect bench mark for “Mr. Wonderful” to do just that.
