For many MMA fighters, fighting is all they know. There is no life after hanging up the gloves for some guys.

The guys on this list don’t fall into that group of fighters.

That’s because whether it’s stepping into an announcer’s booth, sitting down behind a news desk or running classes in a gym, the fighters on this list will have successful post-fight careers. If anyone has been around enough fighters, you’ll know that some are made to be coaches or have the gift of gab and some simply don’t.

These guys have those qualities and then some. For them, fighting is fun, but they don’t have to ever worry about getting to the point of fighting for a paycheck because they know (or should know) that there will be a steady stream of money following their active careers.

Rich Franklin Named One FC Vice President, Still Planning for “Sensible” UFC Retirement Fight

(Now that I think about it, Rich always was something of a forward thinker when it came to MMA.)

If Rich Franklin is “a loser” by his own admission, I’d sure like to know who he considers a winner (besides Anderson Silva, obviously). The former middleweight champion has been killing it outside of the octagon lately, opening his own successful, high-end juice business and now, accepting a role as the Vice President of burgeoning Asian MMA promotion, One FC. Not bad for a guy who once *insert hackneyed Ace Ventura reference here*

While rumors of Franklin’s potential gig started floating around more than a month ago, it wasn’t until this morning that Cheryl Tay of Yahoo Sports broke the official news. ONE FC chief executive officer Victor Cui was more than elated when discussing the role of his promotion’s latest acquirement:

Rich Franklin is another perfect example – he is an icon in this industry. Everybody loves him, he is well-respected, and he will a fantastic addition to the team in terms of experience and helping the sport grow in Asia from ground up awareness.

We will continue to define his role but to me now what’s most important is finding the best people. I am aggressively hiring in all positions and looking to add another 200 staff in the near future as we grow. At the moment, we are a young company still and Rich will do a lot of different things for us, from talent management to fighter recruitment and giving seminars.

Franklin was similarly excited by the prospect of working for Asia’s fastest-developing MMA promotion, telling Yahoo that “MMA in Asia right now is at the tip of the iceberg.”

“If you were to rewind the clock,” said Franklin, “it’s like MMA in the States back in 2003. I think MMA is going to take off like wildfire here in Asia and I will be part of it.”

Franklin made sure to confirm that, despite not having fought in over two years, there will be nothing in his ONE FC deal preventing him from fulfilling his UFC contract with a final fight, whenever that may be.

I went to speak to Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta of the UFC at the end of last year, to tell them that ONE FC was offering me a job. They told me it sounds like a really good offer and they were completely supportive, unlike what others might have thought.

According to the UFC, taking a position in ONE FC does not force me into retiring from fighting. It is my intention to fight my last fight and it will be my retirement fight. But I have to sit down and discuss this with everybody (at ONE FC) as well. Will it be at 185 or 205 pounds? It doesn’t matter as long as the opponent they pick makes sense to me. It must be something exciting for the fans to see.

Although “Ace” will remain stateside while carrying out most of his duties for ONE FC, he will be in Singapore all week to promote/attend ONE FC: Honor & Glory. Let’s hope he’s able to avoid another restroom mishap like the last time he was around fancy company.

UFC Booking Alert: Michael Bisping to Face Cung Le in August, Hector Lombard vs. Dong Hyun Kim Booked as Well

Michael Bisping has been booked to fight Cung Le on August 23rd, in the main event of a Fight Night card that takes place at the Cotai Arena in Macau. This booking was announced at the UFC 173 post-fight presser.

Le won his last match with a sudden, dramatic KO victory over Rich Franklin. Despite such a win, the 42-year-old isn’t exactly a threat to Bisping, who’s coming off a disappointing decision loss to Tim Kennedy. Looks like the UFC wants its British meal ticket back in the win column as soon as possible.

Get the details on the co-main event, and where the fight card will air after the jump.

The co-main event of this Fight Night card will feature a bout between Dong Hyun Kim and Hector Lombard. Kim is on  a four-fight winning streak. Most recently, he knocked out John Hathaway with a gorgeous spinning back elbow. Lombard is only on a two-fight win streak but has looked equally if not more impressive. Since dropping to welterweight, he’s smashed Nate Marquardt and sent Jake Shields out of the UFC.

It’s a shame these matches will only air on Fight Pass.

“How to Be a Loser”: Rich Franklin Discusses the Lessons of Defeat at TEDxUChicago

“I believe that there’s a potential loser in each and every one of you.”

It’s not exactly the kind of line you’d expect to hear during one of those usually uplifting TED speeches — but learning how to react to defeat and learn from it is one of the greatest lessons that former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin can give us. In this must-see monologue from last month’s TEDxUChicago, Franklin discusses his crushing first loss to Anderson Silva, why his win over Travis Lutter remains his favorite fight, and what it means to be an “effective loser” and to “lose with the effort of a champion.” Check it out…

Former UFC middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin is currently in talks with Singapore-based MMA promotion One FC in regards to becoming the promotion’s vice president. There were conflicting reports Saturday morning regarding whether or not he had actually already put pen to paper, but Franklin took to Facebook to clear the air:

I have been in talks with ONE FC about taking a job with them. They offered me a position as VP. I will be heading to ONE FC headquarters in the next few weeks to work out the details. I met with Dana and Lorenzo at the end of last year and they gave me their blessing. I will keep you posted.

It’s a surprising development for one of the best middleweights of all time. Franklin is still signed with the UFC as a fighter, and he discussed his desire to complete his UFC contract, which has one fight remaining, in February with MMA Junkie. However, he turned down a bout with former Pride light heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to focus on maintaining his recently opened juice bar in Beverly Hills.

Franklin has been nothing but open in regards to his financial situation, and has discussed how his business venture is largely due to his inability to retire, in spite of a lengthy, successful UFC career. Picking up a new, steady paycheck from a budding MMA promotion would obviously help him in that regard.

For One FC, Franklin is a great choice for a high-profile hire, who actually has close ties to Asian MMA. “Ace” has close ties to prominent Singapore gym Evolve MMA and trained there for his bout with Cung Le. He also previously worked alongside the promotion at the One FC Asian MMA Summit in 2013.

This is also the latest big boardroom hire for One FC, which scooped up Azhar Muhammad-Saul, former head of Bloomberg Asia-Pacific Enterprises, and former UEFA Champion’s League broadcasting bigwig Patrick Murphy.

While Franklin’s spot with the promotion isn’t yet official, look for the deal to be sealed in the coming weeks.

Franklin isn’t the first old-time UFC fighter to score a cushy job. The UFC made Chuck Liddell vice president of parties and shitty battery commercials business development and Matt Hughes was made czar of fighter conduct [Editor’s note: LOL]. The move to the desk comes at a good time for Franklin. He hasn’t fought in two years and, while he was capable of beating guys like Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell, he was beaten decisively by the likes of Cung Le and Forrest Griffin.

The biggest question about Franklin’s potential move to ONE FC, however, is how it will impact his juice bar business.
