The UFC has undergone some serious changes ever since ZUFFA sold the company to WME-IMG. While the new owners have had sporadic success like Mayweather vs. McGregor and UFC 217, it’s safe to say that 2017 had more low points than high ones for the promotion, and MMA as a result.

Failed drug tests, arrests, and a multitude of injuries have ravished the promotion all year, so what can the UFC do to ensure a better 2018?

These six directives are an absolute must if the promotion plans on rebounding from this past year:

6. Less Events Per Year

Remember back when every UFC card seemed to be stacked from top to bottom? Remember when watching a UFC event was a special occasion? Sometimes less is more, and with the UFC at the height of its popularity, oversaturation has watered down the product.

Smaller cards often go unnoticed due to lack of big-name fighters, which begs the question; do we need a UFC event four times a month?

Less cards mean more meaningful cards, like back in the mid-to-late aughts when every name was recognizable and each event was loaded top to bottom. UFC 84, 92, 100… The golden age of the UFC.

With the UFC’s partnership with FOX coming to a potential end (their deal ends in 2018), the thought of less but far more significant cards could be a reality in the not-too-distant future, and it would potentially help the company’s numbers next year.

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is in a different position, and she’s not enjoying the idea of not having the 115-belt around her waist.

She was finished by Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden. The finish of the bout saw Jedrzejczyk being swarmed by a barrage of strikes at 3:03 of the first round. As a result of this loss, she lost her title.

Jedrzejczyk believes she is deserving of a rematch with the newly crowned champion due to her accomplishments in the sport. She also pointed out that UFC President Dana White hugged her and offered some words of encouragement after the fight.

In a recent Q&A session with fans, Jedrzejczyk fired back at her critics who came out and gave their take about her performance in this fight.

“Mistakes happen to everyone,” Jedrzejczyk told MMAjunkie on Thursday in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s UFC event in Shanghai, China. “But it was not a mistake, it was an accident.”

“I’m not gonna blame anyone because I’m a classy lady. I’m a professional athlete. But please, don’t say anything about my coaches or my team. We were prepared for this fight, and I was supposed to do it this way.”

“I give big respect to Rose Namajunas,” she added. “She won the fight in a good style. But the thing is like I said, it was an accident, I know what happened, I analyzed the fight and I know what happened, (and) I will be back stronger than ever.”

Jedrzejczyk was also criticized for her pre-fight behavior because some people thought that she was arrogant. Joanna is not changing her ways as she actually promises more of it.

“People who are saying that I am cocky or arrogant that’s why I lost, I just want to tell you that I will be more cocky,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I will be more arrogant. And I will be more loud because I know my value. I am bigger than that night at UFC 217.”

According to Joanna Jedrzejczyk, her next fight is set and it will be for the strawweight title.

The Polish striker is coming off of a shocking first round stoppage loss to Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 earlier this month (Nov. 4 2017) in New York City in which she surrendered her 115-pound title in the process. After the fight, she made it abundantly clear that her immediate focus was on regaining her title, and it appears as if the UFC will give her a chance to do just that:

“I already spoke to the UFC, and my return is set,” Jedrzejczyk said to InTheCagePL as translated by Fan Sided. “My next fight will be for the title belt. I don’t know if Rose is going to want to fight in a month, in January or in February. I’ll spend the next two months in Poland with my family,” she added.

Prior to the loss to Namajunas, Jedrzejczyk had defended her title five consecutive times, while establishing herself as one of the best fighters in the world in the process. And while she won’t take any credit away from Namajunas, Jedrzejczyk feels as if she is the ‘queen of this weight class’ and that she always will be:

“Rose was very shocked, like the rest of the world,” she said. “Like I’ve said, she won in a beautiful fashion, but the belt is mine. I’ve built this weight class. I’m the queen of this weight class and I always will be. You can believe it or not.”

It’s currently unclear when and where the fight will take place, but are you in favor of Jedrzejczyk being granted an immediate rematch?

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is staying positive after being finished by Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden.

The finish of the bout saw Jedrzejczyk being swarmed by a barrage of strikes at 3:03 of the first round. As a result of this loss, she lost her title.

Now, the Polish fighter is promising the MMA community that she will be champion again next year.

“In May, I will be champion again,” Jedrzejczyk said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour, per MMA Fighting’s Peter Carroll. “Mark my words. May, I’m coming back. It doesn’t matter if Rose is going to hold the belt or not — I will be back in May and mark my words.”

Although she lost the fight, the former UFC champion is still oozing with confidence. In her mind, she is still the rightful champion.

Going into this fight, Jedrzejczyk was attempting to tie former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s UFC record six consecutive title defenses for a female champion.

By looking back at the early betting odds, Jedrzejczyk entered UFC 217 as a sizable 6-1 betting favorite.

“I’m the greatest, and for myself, I’m still the champion,” she said. “This is just another part in the movie. She can take the belt, but I am still the champion, you know? I’m coming back. I’m coming back really soon. I’m not going to cry, I want to talk to people about that. There is something about me, there is something in my body, and nobody have it.”

Jedrzejczyk believes she is deserving of a rematch with the newly crowned champion due to her accomplishments in the sport. She also pointed out that UFC President Dana White hugged her and offered some words of encouragement after the fight.

“I believe, for what I have done for Dana and the UFC, I deserve the rematch. I will see. I saw Dana on the way back from the press conference,” Jedrzejczyk said. He hugged me, I wanted to leave him, but he was like, ‘Please, stop, I love you so much, we love you and nothing change. We love you even more for this, and your comeback is going to be bigger than all of this.’”

“For myself, I turned the page, and I felt like, ‘your comeback is going to be bigger than all of these records and bigger than this.’”
