Rousimar Palhares: Noted Asshole, Stripped of WSOF Welterweight Title & Suspended Indefinitely

Rousimar Palhares turned in an equally impressive and despicable performance in submitting Jake Shields at WSOF 22 last weekend, defending his welterweight title for the second time in the process. But keeping in line with what we’ve come to expect from the Brazilian, the fight was not without its controversies — Palhares not only gouged Shields’ eyes while mounted in the second round (the damage of which you can see above), but held onto the fight-ending kimura long after referee Steve Mazzagatti had intervened.

With it being revealed earlier today that Shields has suffered significant damage to the shoulder Palhares cranked, “Toquinho” has once again found himself in the hot seat following a victory. WSOF VP Ali Abdel-Aziz threatened to strip Palhares of his title upon reviewing the fight, and on today’s The MMA Hour, WSOF President Ray Sefo followed suit, doing just that and suspending Palhares indefinitely following the NSAC’s investigation of the fight.

But keeping in line with what we’ve come to expect from the Brazilian, the fight was not without its controversies – Palhares not only gouged Shields’ eyes while mounted in the second round (the damage of which you can see above), but held onto the fight-ending kimura long after referee Steve Mazzagatti had intervened.

In regards to the eye pokes, Sefo was equally critical of both Palhares and Mazzagatti, stating, “Not only did he did it once or twice, he did it numerous times. And he was warned by the referee on four different occasions. He should have taken a point or maybe even disqualified him after he did it four times.”

As usual, Palhares has thus far appeared oblivious to the fact that he has done wrong, the mark of a true psychopath. As he told MMA Fighting yesterday:

On the eye pokes: I just protected myself. He put his head on my nose. I just put my hand there to protect myself. I did not put my fingers in his eyes. You can see it at the time.

On the kimura: I did not hold his arm (after the tap). The [referee] said to me before the fight, ‘just go out there, if I put my hand on you, stop.’ And when he put his hand on me, I stopped. I stopped. Sometimes in the fight, it’s hard, it’s difficult to feel something. When it felt it, I [stopped].

You hear that, guys? When Treetrunk Paul Harris is going HAM, he’s going HAM so hard that he can’t even feel his opponent tapping, nor the referee repeatedly hammering on his ribs in an effort to stop him fortheloveofGod…

You’d think that a high level black belt who’s already been fired once for holding onto submissions too long would have learned when to let go by now, but perhaps this is for the best. In any case, Sefo also claimed that Palhares “may never fight for us again” and that he could be looking at a multiple year ban pending the NSAC’s investigation into his latest maiming.

I think the sad part of this is the guy is a great fighter. When Jake Shields is tapping nine times and the referee is tapping you six, seven times and literally pulling you off, that’s where people are gonna get hurt. We’re in a sport. We’re not in a war where we have to eliminate people.

To which I say, good riddance. Whether Palhares is mentally slow or simply an asshole, there’s no place in the sport for a guy who cannot seem to control whether or not he seriously injures an opponent each and every time he steps in the cage.

Rousimar Palhares: Still an Asshole (WSOF 22 Results)

Rousimar Palhares is an asshole. He has always been an asshole. He was fired from the UFC, in fact, for being an asshole. That he has still been able to find gainful employment as a fighter is a testament to the desperation of mid-tier MMA organizations needing to boost their cards with somewhat recognizable talent.

At WSOF 22 last weekend, Palhares once again proved that he is an asshole, repeatedly eye-gouging Jake Shields before, and you’re never going to believe this, holding onto the fight-ending kimura for long after the referee had intervened and even longer after his opponent had tapped. This led to a somewhat dramatic exchange at the end of the fight, in which Shields punched Palhares after the bell while his corner had to be restrained from gang-stomping Palhares a new asshole.

In fact, the only person who you could argue was a bigger asshole than Palhares that night was referee Steve Mazzagatti — although he fell more into the “incompetent asshole” sub-category of assholes to Palhares’ “vengeful asshole.” Not only did Mazzagatti fail to dock Palhares points for his repeated, blatant eye gouges, but he made nothing of the fact that a man with a history of holding submissions to long, well, held yet another submission too long.

Despite claiming victory in what should have been his finest hour — submitting the previously unsubmittable Shields with a simply beautiful kimura — Palhares may have just fought his last fight in the WSOF. According to WSOF Vice President Ali Abdel-Aziz, an announcement on Palhares’ future with the organization will come tomorrow. Rumor has it that, however, that Palhares will be stripped of his title and likely receive a lengthy ban by NSAC, who has already withheld his win bonus.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops, but for now, let’s let this image of Shield’s mutilated eyes confirm once and for all that Rousimar Palhares IS AN ASSHOLE.

During a match between the North Wales Crusaders and the Rochdale Hornets over the weekend, Tony Suffolk committed the hands-down most atrocious foul *I’ve* ever seen, tackling Crusaders forward Alex Thompson to the ground in the opening minutes and applying a brutal heel hook that effectively ended Thompson’s season. According to various sources, the heel hook not only ruptured Thompson’s achilles but damaged his MCL as well, forcing him to take unpaid leave from his job as a landscape gardener. (Because believe it or not, not all countries pay their athletes enough to affect entire economies. Weird.)

What an absolutely abhorrent display by Suffolk there, but luckily (and inexplicably), we here at CagePotato have been given the honor of handing down his punishment: Two minutes on the mat with THIS GUY:

Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next? A Completely Speculative Investigation

The past few weeks have been a trying time to be an MMA fan, with random drug tests nailing Anderson Silva (smh), Hector Lombard (could have seen it coming), and Jon Fitch (wah?!) for various types of performance enhancers. MMA has always had something of a drug problem, but 2015 has brought that issue to the forefront with a resounding injection to the buttocks. Worse yet, the UFC’s decision to recently abandon their out-of-competition drug testing program indicates that the sport’s steroid epidemic will only get worse before it gets better.

The question now becomes: Where do we go from here? Well, I’ve talked it over with my highly-dedicated blogging team of less than two people, and the best thing we could think of was to lob a bunch of biased and completely ungrounded accusations at the select group of MMA fighters who’ve yet to test positive for anabolic steroids. F*ck yeah, internet writing!

So without further adieu, join us as we take a look ahead at the hulked-out future of mixed martial arts, and more specifically, which of its fighters will most likely be popped for PED’s.

The Usual Suspects

Vitor Belfort

Remember how I just said that we would only focus on fighters who *hadn’t* tested positive for steroids before? I lied.

The fact is, Belfort has pissed hot in the past — for 4-hydroxytestosterone following his fight with Dan Henderson at Pride 32 — and experienced a highly suspect career resurgence after jumping on the TRT train back in 2013. Although Belfort has vehemently denied abusing TRT and stated that he only used it to maintain normal testosterone levels, he  also managed to transition off the therapy almost seamlessly in the time since. With his title shot against Chris Weidman having been pushed off half a dozen times now, #TheTimeIsRunningOut on Belfort’s vitality as a top-level fighter. If he’s resorted to the juice in the past, our guess is that he’d be willing to do it again.

Rafael Cavalcante

Like Belfort, “Feijao” has also tested positive for steroids in the past. In his final Strikeforce appearance, Cavalcante tested positive for stanozolol following his first rounds submission win over Mike Kyle. He was punished for this by being signed by the UFC. Cavalcante has also dropped two out of his past three UFC fights, meaning that he is in dire need of a win if he is to continue fighting for the Ultimate Roided Fucking Killers League. So what’s he supposed to do? *Not* take steroids, lose his next fight, and receive his pink slip, or take steroids, win the fight, and apologize afterward as a still-current UFC employee? The solution is obvious.

Here’s what we know: Three Black House fighters have tested positive for steroids in the past seven months. The man pictured above is their strength and conditioning coach. He is 57 years old.

The Questionable Physiques

Phil Davis

Just look at that cartoonishly shaped torso. Phil Davis is sculpted like a Greek statue, and we don’t buy for a second that he achieved it naturally. “Mr. Wonderful?” More like “Mr. ROID-derful.” #NailedIt

No further comment required.

Thiago Alves

Not only is Thiago Alves the buffest welterweight of all time, but in his most recent fight, he dispatched Jordan Mein — a kickboxer since age 11 — with ONE KICK. How’d he do it? Roids. The answer is clearly roids.

Mirko Cro Cop

According to our diligent research, this photo of Mirko Cro Cop was taken last week and has not been altered in any way, shape, or form. Expect to hear word of his positive test shortly after he dispatches Gabe Gonzaga via nuclear holocaust in April.

Cheick Kongo

Cheick Kongo has pectorals the size of dinner plates and a history of using dirty tactics to win fights. By that logic, why *wouldn’t* he resort to the dirtiest tactic of all to win a few more? Daddy needs all those Bellator dollars to support his crippling addiction to Rocky Mountain oysters.

Well, the jury is still out. You see, Rousimar Palhares fought Jon Fitch at WSOF 16 for the promotion’s welterweight championship. Just one problem: UFC on Fox 13 happened last night during pretty much the same time slot. The event, featuring the likes of Junior Dos Santos, Alistair Overeem and Nate Diaz, had enough star power to completely eclipse poor WSOF.

So nobody watched WSOF 16 (which, as Anderson Silva would say, is normal), meaning nobody was around to see Palhares grab a wicked kneebar and crank it until Fitch screamed. In typical Palhares fashion, he didn’t let go once Fitch started tapping. From what we can tell, nobody’s that mad because A. A lot of people probably forgot the two fought last night and B. It’s Palhares. What else do you expect?

The submission occurred less than two minutes into the fight, proving Palhares is that dangerous or Fitch overestimated his leg lock defense that badly.

WSOF VP Ali Abdel-Aziz Goes on the Warpath After Rousimar Palhares Pulls Out of Title Fight With Jon Fitch

Like my sexual history, the WSOF career of Rousimar Palhares has been brief and emotionally devastating. After being gifted an immediate shot at the WSOF welterweight title against Steve Carl at WSOF 9, Palhares secured said title via a brutal heel-hook in just over a minute. The victory set Palhares up with a fight against fellow UFC castaway Jon Fitch that was scheduled to go down at WSOF 11 on July 5th, but today brought the news that Palhares has withdrawn from the fight to take care of his sick mother.

A reasonable excuse if there ever was one, but one that also apparently pissed WSOF executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz right the f*ck off. Aziz, who has publicly spatted with WSOF fighter Josh Burkman (and Vinny Magalhaes) in the past, told MMAFighting earlier today that he is sick of being taken advantage by guys like Palhares with their “bullshit stories” about their “sick mothers” and “impoverished upbringing.” Okay, those quotes were made up, but here’s what he actually said:

Enough is enough. I have to put WSOF first and everyone else second. No more Mr. Nice Guy.

We’re getting screwed. I’m trying to put on a fight card and be nice to fighters, and now they don’t want to fight each other.

I’m getting sick of this. If a fighter is not going to respect the promotion, he is going to be shelved for a long time. I will not release anyone to another promotion. Fighters must honor their contracts. 

Eesh. I can see where Aziz is coming from here, but for Christ’s sake, we’re talking about Rousimar’s mother here. Show the Mapinguari her due respect, Ali, or suffer the consequences.
