Every now and then MMA presents fans with bouts that cause an immediate face-palm reaction.

Whether they are rematches, trilogies or “circus” bouts, there are just some fights that should never happen.

Mariusz Pudzianowski versus former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is a fine example of a circus bout.

After about 30 seconds of offensive effort, Pudzianowski, a winner of five World’s Strongest Man titles, suffered a cardio meltdown that allowed Sylvia to get the upper hand and pound the Polish phenom into submission.

Who could ever forget about the Jose Canseco and Hong Man Choi bout?

The controversial Major League Baseball superstar made it 1:17 into the bout before balling up into the fetal position to avoid any damage.

“Blockbuster” rematches can also make little to no sense.

Former champions Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz were scheduled to duke it out after finishing their coaching duties on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 11.

While both legends have tremendous pay-per-view draws, Liddell had already defeated Ortiz soundly on a couple of occasions. Regardless of how strong the rivalry is, sometimes you just have to let go and move on.

These were just a few examples, but the best are soon to follow.

Here are five fights we hope never happen in MMA.

‘Ultimate Royce Gracie’ Fight-Picking Contest: Who’s a Big Winner?

(Props: Anchor Bay Entertainment)

Judging from the entries in last week’s fight-picking contest, there are a whole lot of heartbroken Pat Barry fans in the house today. Out of 114 predictions, only one person thought that Cheick Kongo would win by first-round knockout. That person was ‘Me likey‘, who thought it would happen at the 4:10 mark; the actual time of stoppage was 2:39. Obviously, we’re just going to pretend that Marquardt vs. Story wasn’t part of this contest — just as both of those guys will be trying to forget that this awful weekend ever happened, we’re guessing. (Hey Rick, remember when you were on this list? Sucks, bro.)

So, Me likey, hit us up at [email protected] with your real name and address and we’ll send you that Royce Gracie Blu-ray disc as soon as we get a chance. Thanks to everybody who played…

Every once in a while, someone will get a title shot who really doesn’t deserve it. In result, MMA fans everywhere are left scratching their heads, asking “What the (expletive)?”

Reminder: Watch the UFC 134 Press Conference Live From Rio at 2:00 pm ET

Just a friendly reminder that we will have the stream of the UFC 134 press conference for your viewing pleasure starting at 2:00 pm ET.

Here are a few of the faces you can expect to see at the event:

I may be way off, but why would the UFC fly in a bunch of fighters for a press conference for an event that will likely be a guaranteed sellout unless it was to announce an exciting ‘special’ addition to the card, like say Royce Gracie vs. Cris Cyborg or Eddie Bravo vs. Royler Gracie.

Let the baseless speculation begin. Best answer gets to slap ReX next time you see him.

The UFC has a short but very diverse history. Throughout the early days (specifically before the company was purchased by Zuffa) there were several bizarre or shady characters for every one legitimate fighter.

However, even the legitimate fighters are looked down upon today because the sport has evolved so much since then. But what would happen if these legitimate fighters, as well as some of the more questionable ones, were brought into today’s world and given modern training?

While no one can really know the answer to that question, it’s certainly fun to think about. Here are 16 fighters of the pre-Zuffa era who would generate a significant amount of intrigue (whether by force of their personality, skill, or otherwise) if they could return to modern MMA in their primes.

The fighters aren’t ranked per se, but they are put in the general order of least anticipated hypothetical return to modern MMA to most anticipated.
