The eighteenth installment of UFC on FOX should be quite the doozy.

Headlined by a light heavyweight clash between knockout specialist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and surging veteran Ryan Bader for No. 1 contender rights, Saturday’s card stands to deliver in fashion.

Outside of the main event, an ultra-important heavyweight bout between Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell adds even more power to UFC on FOX 18. That, too, offers title implications in a division in which Can Velasquez was just replaced by Stipe Miocic for UFC 196’s championship bout with Fabricio Werdum.

For all four headliners, this weekend represents a crossroad in their respective careers. Some need to prove they can deliver on the grandest of stages, while others need to show they still have enough gusto left on their high-mileage motor.

Find out what’s at stake for each top-bill fighter entering the first FOX card of 2016.

This Saturday night (January 30, 2016) the UFC returns with the anticipated UFC on FOX 18 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The free television event features a pivotal light heavyweight main event between No. 2-ranked former title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and streaking contender Ryan Bader, whose been very vocal about a title shot due to five straight victories.

He’ll almost certainly get it if he can get past the monstrous challenge of “Rumble,” who most recently rebounded from his discouraging title loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 by knocking out Jimi Manuwa at September’s UFC 191, but that opportunity will be held up based on what happens in the awaited return of former champion Jon Jones.

Either way, his fight with Johnson is undoubtedly the biggest of his career, and one that will shape the near future of the relatively shallow UFC light heavyweight division. To prepare for the event, the UFC has released Road to the Octagon for UFC on FOX 18’s main bouts. Watch the full segment for “Rumble” vs. Bader right here, and look out for the second and third videos on the following pages:

31-year-old UFC light heavyweight slugger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is one of the most feared men in mixed martial arts (MMA) today.

Currently ranked No. 1 in the divisional rankings, Johnson has split wins and losses in his last two bouts. He was submitted by reigning champion Daniel Cormier last May, but bounced back with devastating knockout over Jimi Manuwa back at UFC 191 in September.

Now scheduled to headline January 30’s UFC on FOX 19 opposite No. 4-ranked Ryan Bader, “Rumble” could find himself in line for another title shot with a victory.

That being said, it’s surprising to hear a fighter in the prime of his career admit that he may only stay around the fight game for a few more years.

Johnson recently expanded on this in an interview with MMA Junkie Radio:

“I plan on retiring within the next, like, three years. I want to live life without being worried about getting punched and getting up every day and losing weight and all of that craziness. I love the sport and respect the sport, but I want to be able to sit back and have a family and enjoy life besides getting up every morning, having some other guy guy all up on top of me.”

The light heavyweight title is likely to be defended sometime in the coming months when Cormier rematches former champion and former pound for pound king Jon “Bones” Jones.

Johnson was actually set to challenge Jones at UFC 187, but Cormier stepped in after “Bones” was arrested on felony charges and suspended.

If “Rumble” gets by Bader, he could get his rematch with “DC”, or better yet, his shot at Jones.

Here’s to hoping he sticks around long enough to fulfil these potential opportunities.
