UFC bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley thinks he’s worthy of Fighter of the Year but gives the nod to Chael Sonnen after his recent incident in Las Vegas.

Sonnen was detained from a Las Vegas hotel last weekend after allegedly assaulting five different victims. It was later alleged that this was in response to Sonnen’s wife being harassed by a few patrons on the casino floor.

Sonnen has yet to comment publically on the incident, despite allegedly speaking with personalities such as Brendan Schaub. Sonnen was given five battery citations and the investigation is still ongoing.

During a recent podcast episode, O’Malley said Sonnen would jokingly get his vote for Fighter of the Year after the brawl.

“Fighter of the year? If I had to vote from Chael, Kamaru, or me, I’d probably pick Chael,” O’Malley said. “If he won in that hotel scuffle. It was 5 guys.”

Sean O’Malley Touts Chael Sonnen As 2021’s Fighter Of The Year

O’Malley recently stated his claim that he deserves the prestigious award. He’s arguably in the running with top UFC fighters such as Charles Oliveira and Kamaru Usman.

O’Malley notched three wins in 2021. He began the year with a bounceback knockout win over Thomas Almeida after losing to Marlon Vera. O’Malley would then put on striking clinics in finishes over Kris Moutinho and Raulian Paiva.

O’Malley’s star power has risen since his time on Dana White‘s Contender Series, in which he knocked out Alfred Khashakyan.

Sonnen is widely regarded as one of the greatest promoters for the sport of MMA of all time. After an illustrious career in the cage, he transitioned seamlessly to a career in media, hosting multiple programs on ESPN and YouTube.

It’s unclear what exactly led up to Sonnen battering five victims in Las Vegas, but this hasn’t stopped fighters like O’Malley from giving him credit.

What was your reaction to Chael Sonnen’s recent incident?

While Sean O’Malley may split opinion among the combat sports community, “Sugar” believes there’s one UFC fighter who certainly does the opposite.

O’Malley’s rise to stardom has been relatively rapid. That’s immediately one reason why a portion of fans dislike the charismatic rising bantamweight. That, coupled with his confident and outgoing personality, means many actively root against the 27-year-old. That was no different when he returned to action earlier this month at UFC 269.

Having rebounded from his first professional MMA loss with back-to-back third-round finishes against Thomas Almeida and Kris Moutinho earlier this year, the Montana native hoped to make it three from three inside a sold-out T-Mobile Arena at the year’s final pay-per-view. In the main card opener, he did just that, brutally knocking Raulian Paiva out before the close of the opening round.

O’Malley Says Everyone Loves A Bit Of “Bam Bam”

Tai Tuivasa

Having been content facing unranked opposition, “Sugar” will seemingly receive the pay bump he’s been after in the near future and be up against top opposition in 2022. But despite continuing his rise and easily dispatching of Paiva, who many thought would give him trouble, O’Malley certainly still has his fair share of doubters in the community.

According to the 27-year-old, that’s a good thing. During the UFC 269 post-fight press conference, O’Malley was asked whether it frustrates him when fans and pundits pick little things to criticize him about. In his mind, he wouldn’t be the star he is without being disliked by a large portion of the UFC fanbase. He suggested there’s only one man truly loved by everyone, and that’s Tai Tuivasa.

“That means I’m doing it right. If everyone just loved me, then I probably wouldn’t be as big as I am. I think there’s only probably one person that everyone loves and that’s Tai Tuivasa. I think he’s the only one. How could you not like that guy? But for me, I could see how people don’t like me. But I guarantee they watched me tonight. I guarantee they did not turn the TV, they didn’t get up to go to the bathroom, they probably weren’t even eating or drinking. I bet they were locked into that TV when I was fighting.”

Like O’Malley, Tuivasa was also in action at UFC 269. If fans didn’t go for a toilet break during the O’Malley vs. Paiva clash, hopefully, they didn’t do it for the Tuivasa vs. Sakai fight earlier in the night.

If they did, they’d have missed a combination of “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, a brutal knockout, and multiple shoeys

Whether it’s the combination of vicious KO power and hilarious ’90’s pop walkouts, or the combination of in-Octagon performance and post-fight shoeys, or all three combined, fans love Tuivasa and the energy and entertainment he brings on fight night.

But as well as being as loved as O’Malley says, “Bam Bam” is also a fast-rising heavyweight with time on his side. At just 28, the Australian has already established himself just outside the top 10 and is riding a four-fight win streak following triumphs over Stefan Struve, Harry Hunsucker, Greg Hardy, and Sakai.

We’ve certainly got many more years of KO’s and cheesy walkout songs in front of us.

Do you agree with Sean O’Malley? Is Tai Tuivasa the one fighter universally loved?

Rising UFC bantamweight star Sean O’Malley doesn’t appear to be fussed about who his first appearance of 2022 will come against.

Talk of O’Malley’s future opponents has intensified following his latest victory inside the Octagon. Having rebounded from his first loss in MMA with stoppage victories over once highly-touted Brazilian Thomas Almeida and tough debutant Kris Moutinho earlier this year, “Sugar” looked to make it three for three in 2021 when he opened the UFC 269 main card opposite Raulian Paiva.

Despite undoubtedly facing a step-up in competition and a formerly-ranked bantamweight, O’Malley looked at his best and finished the Brazilian with a vicious combination shortly before the end of the first round.

O’Malley Targets March/April Return

Prior to his seventh consecutive pay-per-view outing, O’Malley had singled out fellow surging bantamweight striker Adrian Yanez as a potential future opponent. When discussing his route to the title, “Sugar” even listed the 28-year-old as his next step after knocking out Paiva.

Despite that, O’Malley appears open to facing whoever the UFC puts in front of him. During the UFC 269 post-fight press conference, O’Malley was asked whether he still had Yanez on his radar, and while reiterating his targeted March return, the Montana native said he has no one in particular in mind for his next fight.

“I fought three times last year, three times this year. I feel like every day, I just have a fight coming up. So I’m just gonna enjoy this and try to not book a fight and just enjoy being with my family and my little princess. And I’m sure I’ll fight in March, April. Who will it be? I don’t know. Doesn’t really matter. As long as the Suga Show is fighting, I don’t really think people care too much who I’m fighting.”

While a fight with Yanez would certainly provide fireworks and see one man establish themselves as perhaps bantamweight’s hottest prospect, the UFC may choose to build both men up separately. All that said, Yanez does still remain an option for O’Malley as well, as he reiterated on Thursday.

Given their previous exchanges, many have suggested O’Malley fight Cody Garbrandt next, especially after the former champ’s attempts to succeed as a flyweight took a hit this past weekend. “Sugar” has also made his desire to exact revenge on Marlon Vera known, so perhaps “Chito” could be convinced to fight down the rankings in a PPV slot against O’Malley.

Nevertheless, whoever O’Malley is matched up with next year should provide for an exciting contest and aid the 27-year-old’s rise up the 135-pound ladder.

Sean O’Malley has his sight set to the top, the UFC prospect is on his own journey to greatness and the ‘SugaShow’ took one step closer to that at UFC 269. O’Malley defeated Raulian Paiva via TKO inside the first round in what was scheduled to be his hardest test to date.

MMA isn’t the only combat sport Sean O’Malley is interested in competing in it appears after he spoke on an episode of the Full Send Podcast and expressed his interest in a future matchup with Boxer Gervonta Davis.

“If they were a massive star. Floyd came to MMA; sure Dana would figure out a way to pay him. I don’t think Gervonta is a big enough star. Dana would be like, no, we don’t f**king want him. But for me to box Gervonta, that’s a massive fight someday, like that’s a massive f**king fight someday,” O’Malley said.

“That’s a Floyd-Conor fight someday potentially if we’re on the same path. We haven’t done enough, he hasn’t done what Floyd has done, I haven’t done what Conor has done. But if it keeps going. I don’t see my career going any different, I’m going up. I could see him keep beating people, too. It could be a massive boxing fight someday.”

“It would have to be a UFC deal like Conor did. Conor was still signed with the UFC, Dana still got paid. It would have to be something like that. I can box, I can f**king box, like actually box. That combo that I threw up against the cage, there were no kicks there. That was boxing, it was clean.”

Sean O’Malley Mocks Gervonta Davis

Although O’Malley believes he would do well if he ever got the opportunity to go and box, he does not think the same if Gervonta Davis was to come over and step into an octagon.

“When he said that he’s from the hood, that’s how he would wrestle. That was the funniest f**king thing ever. If he actually grappled with someone, like he said, he’d come to MMA.”

“If he took one class at a f**king amateur gym, he would be like what the f**k, I would never do that. It’s funny to see how delusional he is to think he could come into an MMA fight and be successful at all against an elite-level fighter.” (transcribed by essentiallysports.com)

Sean O’Malley is looking to box Gervonta Davis in the future.

Davis is a decorated boxer who holds titles in multiple weight classes, including reigning as the WBA lightweight and the WBA super-lightweight champion. He also vacated the IBF and WBA super featherweight belts in August of this year.

Although Davis is a massive name in the sport, partly due to him being Floyd Mayweather’s protégé, Sean O’Malley wants to test himself against “Tank” in the future. This request comes even though Davis has hinted at an MMA fight in the past, which “Suga” doesn’t believe.

“When he said that he’s from the hood, that’s how he would wrestle. That was the funniest f**king thing ever. If he actually grappled with someone, like he said, he’d come to MMA,” O’Malley said on the Full Send podcast (via Essentially Sports). “If he took one class at a f**king amateur gym, he would be like what the f**k, I would never do that. It’s funny to see how delusional he is to think he could come into an MMA fight and be successful at all against an elite-level fighter.”

With Sean O’Malley doubting Gervonta Davis would take an MMA fight, Suga does admit he wants to box him. He’s confident he has the striking and unique footwork to pose some problems for boxers like Davis.

For O’Malley, he believes a fight with Davis could be as big as McGregor-Mayweather, but they both need to win a few more fights.

“But for me to box Gervonta, that’s a massive fight someday, like that’s a massive f**king fight someday,” O’Malley said. “That’s a Floyd-Conor fight someday potentially if we’re on the same path. We haven’t done enough, he hasn’t done what Floyd has done, I haven’t done what Conor has done. But if it keeps going. I don’t see my career going any different, I’m going up. Sean O’Malley feels that following on from his knockout loss Tyron Woodley has ruined the legacy he had built for himself across MMA. Woodley has lost back-to-back boxing matches against Jake Paul with the rematch ending by a devastating KO.

‘The Chosen One’ also had the misfortune of losing his final four bouts in a row within the UFC and although it was against the top end of the division it showed the true trajectory the former welterweight champion was heading on.

O’Malley spoke on an episode of the TimboSugarShow and explained that like many fans the vicious KO caught him off guard given the slow pace of the fight in the rounds prior to this.

“I was watching them on my laptop with my eyes kind of shutting. It was the sixth round getting closer to the end of the fight. It looked like it was probably gonna go all eight [rounds] and it was a close fight.”

“I didn’t really know who I had necessarily winning each round. But, out of f*cking nowhere, [Paul] slept him… bad!”

Sean O’Malley says Woodley’s legacy is now ‘completely destroyed’

Woodley now sits in a difficult spot as an athlete himself. Given his ending at the UFC, it is extremely unlikely they would be looking to re-sign the former champion, and with boxing not going the way he wanted who knows what’s next for him.

However, no matter what adventure he moves on to Sean O’Malley feels that this loss could still have a serious effect.

“Dude, it completely destroyed his f*cking legacy,” O’Malley said. “That could affect Tyron Woodley big time, or he could just be completely unattached to that and still be happy. That’s a f*cking skill that you have to require.” (transcribed by mmanews.com)

How badly did the loss to Jake Paul damage Woodley’s legacy? Where do you see him going next?
