If you’re a hardcore combat sports fan, you have a big decision on your hands come November 2.

Two of the biggest fights of the year in both boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) fall on the same night. In the world of boxing, Canelo Alvarez jumps up to light heavyweight to take on Sergey Kovalev for the WBO title. The Mexican star, and arguably boxing’s biggest draw, aims to capture gold in yet another weight class.

In MMA, two of the sport’s biggest fan favorites go head-to-head inside Madison Square Garden. Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will clash in a welterweight contest for the one-off Baddest Mother F*cker Championship being created by UFC president Dana White. Underneath that contest is a stacked card, as per usual for the UFC’s trips to MSG.

Today, the UFC held its UFC 244 pre-fight press conference in New York featuring both Diaz and Masvidal. All three men (White, Masvidal, and Diaz) were asked why fight fans should watch UFC 244 over Canelo vs. Kovalev. Diaz’s response was simple.

“We’re fighting for the best mother fuck*r in the game belt. That’s why,” Diaz said.

As for White, he said Golden Boy and company would be “f*cking nuts” to go up against the Las Vegas-based promotion’s stacked MSG card.

“So, the night we started talking – we started talking about this date and that we were going to take this date, and then a week late I heard they were going to do that fight,” White said.

“I think they’re crazy to go the same night as us on DAZN, but it is what it is. But if they time it right, and they do this thing the right way, it could be very much like the other night when Gaethje fought Cowboy, and then the Fury fight was on after. So if they time it right, it could work out. But if they want to go head-to-head, they’re f*cking nuts.”

Which event do you think will pull in bigger numbers come fight night in November?

Canelo Alvarez will be jumping up another weight class for his next fight. The Mexican star is heading to light heavyweight to take on Sergey Kovalev for the Russian’s WBO light heavyweight title.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger made the news official. The fight will be streamed on DAZN and will take place on November 2. For mixed martial arts (MMA) fans, that’s the same night as UFC 244 from Madison Square Garden on pay-per-view (PPV), which will be headlined by Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz in a welterweight scrap.

No venue has been decided on for the contest, but it will be taking place from Las Vegas. Alvarez has remained undefeated since suffering his first and only defeat inside the ring back in 2013 to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He now holds a record of 51-1-2. He’ll take on Kovalev, the 36-year-old champion who is currently on a two-fight win streak.

Kovalev was undefeated until 2016 when he was bested by Andre Ward in back-to-back bouts. After that, he racked up a two-fight win streak before Eleider Álvarez pulled off a shocking upset win over the Russian in August of 2018, finishing Kovalev in the seventh round of their first meeting.

The loss was avenged this past February by Kovalev, who won via unanimous decision. He made it two in a row against Anthony Yarde with an 11th round knockout win late last month. Now, Kovalev hopes to become the first man to defeat Alvarez inside the ring since Mayweather did so several years ago.

What do you think about the matchup between Alvarez and Kovalev?

Boxing unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is reportedly looking at conquering another division with a potential move to light heavyweight.

Alvarez is already a champion in three divisions, having defeated Rocky Fielding last year to become the WBA (regular) super-middleweight champion. He most recently added the IBF middleweight title to his collection following his win over Daniel Jacobs last month.

It looked like the Mexican was then slated to face former champion Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight for September. However, that doesn’t seem to be the plan anymore as Alvarez and his team prefer to face WBA (super) super-middleweight champion Callum Smith or WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev according to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger.

This was followed by a report from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, stating although there is no offer at the moment, Alvarez is “zeroed” in on a potential fight with Kovalev.

Kovalev long reigned over the light heavyweight division until suffering back-to-back defeats to Andre Ward in 2016 and 2017. He has since suffered a TKO defeat to Eleider Alvarez last year, but bounced back with a unanimous decision win in their rematch earlier this year.

Do you want to see this fight happen next? Or with Callum Smith? Or would you prefer to see Alvarez and Golovkin run things back a third time?
