Ever since UFC 229, the number one question fans and media have been asking is, “Who’s next for Khabib Nurmagomedov?” The undefeated Russian tapped out Conor McGregor in the main event of the UFC’s biggest-selling pay-per-view ever earlier this month, and at this point we are all still wondering who is the next opponent for […]

Dana White Believes Tony Ferguson Deserves Khabib Fight Next

UFC President Dana White says as a fan, he thinks Tony Ferguson is next in line against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Dana White believes that former UFC interim champion Tony Ferguson should be next in line for Khabib Nurmagomedov. This is from a different standpoint though. Not as the UFC President but rather as a fight fan.

This has been a fight that fans have wanted to see for years but something has always gotten in the way of it happening.

After a third attempt, they did not fight each other. Nurmagomedov and Ferguson’s highly-anticipated lightweight match-up was scrapped when Nurmagomedov was rushed to the hospital the day before the weigh-ins prior to the UFC 209 event. He was unable to compete in his scheduled interim lightweight title match in the co-main event, which was dubbed as the people’s main event.

Then, the promotion tried to make it for the fourth time at UFC 223. But that fight got scrapped after Ferguson suffered a knee injury. In his latest fight, Ferguson beat Anthony Pettis by second round TKO in the co-main event of UFC 229 pay-per-view event.

Obviously, a rematch between the UFC lightweight champ and Conor McGregor would be a huge fight. But White doesn’t see this bout as the one to make next. Instead, he stated in an interview with ESPN.com that he would like to see Ferguson get the next shot at the title.

Dana White Believes In Ferguson

“As a fight fan, you’ve gotta go with Tony,” White said. “Tony had the belt, tweaked his knee, got stripped. (McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov) happens. Tony never lost the belt in a fight.”

White pointed out that both Ferguson and McGregor have lost their lightweight titles without defending them. However, Ferguson has not received another shot at the crown, unlike McGregor.

“Neither did Conor, but Conor actually got the opportunity to fight for the belt. I think Tony deserves the next shot.”

Dustin Poirier has been forced out of the biggest fight of his career.

News unfortunately broke tonight from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto tonight that Poirier has been forced out of his UFC 230 match-up with Nate Diaz. Poirier suffered an undisclosed injury.

The news is devastating to the No. 3-ranked ‘Diamond’s’ career trajectory. He has won three straight fights and eight out of his last 10. Poirier most recently most recently finished Eddie Alvarez at July’s UFC on FOX 30.

He was set to welcome Diaz back to the Octagon. The fan favorite Stockton slugger has been out of action since a decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202 in 2016. It is unknown if Diaz will remain on the card.

Poirier’s withdrawal also comes on the same night that UFC 230 got its Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis main event. Here is how the card looks as of now:

Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis
Nate Diaz vs. TBA
Chris Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold
Ronaldo Souza vs. David Branch
Derek Brunson vs. Israel Adesanya
Brian Kelleher vs. Domingo Pilarte
Jason Knight vs. Jordan Rinaldi
Jack Marshman vs. Karl Roberson
Matt Frevola vs. Lando Vannata
Julio Arce vs. Sheymon Moraes
Sultan Aliev vs. Lyman Good
Shane Burgos vs. Kurt Holobaugh

The official UFC rankings have been updated after last weekend’s (Sat., October 6, 2018) UFC 229 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Obviously, the biggest impact was made by UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘The Eagle’ submitted former champion Conor McGregor via fourth-round neck crank (watch full highlights here) in his first title defense.

For his historic effort, Nurmagomedov rose eight full spots on the pound-for-pound list to No. 2. The undefeated wrestler only trails heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier for the top spot in the UFC as a result. McGregor fell the same six spots down to No. 8 at pound-for-pound. He also fell to No. 2 at lightweight. Tony Ferguson overtook him thanks to his thrilling TKO win over Anthony Pettis.

However, all of that could change pending the results of Khabib and McGregor’s complaints from NSAC. The fighters engaged in one of the most chaotic brawls in MMA history. It began when Khabib leaped into the crowd to assault McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh recently revealed what Danis did to set Nurmagomedov off.

Three of Khabib’s teammates assaulted McGregor and were arrested. They will not face charges, however, after McGregor declined to press them. But the NSAC was not so lenient on ‘The Eagle.’ They withheld his sizable $2,000,000 purse for the fight. It is possible he could be stripped of the belt as well. UFC President Dana White recently offered his thoughts on his champ’s upcoming punishment. Nurmagomedov’s official ranking could be changing soon as a result.

But for now, ‘The Eagle’ is flying high.
