Last night’s (Sat., December 3, 2016) The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 24 Finale is in the record books from the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson secured his ninth straight title defense over show finalist Tim Elliott in the main event.

It wasn’t without its moments of adversity, however, as Elliott almost shocked the world with quite possibly the biggest upset in Octagon history when he had “Mighty Mouse” in a tight choke in the opening frame. Johnson showed why he is quite possibly the best mixed martial artist in the UFC when he brought out the heart of a champion to relentlessy ground Elliott and pass his guard with masterful ground work in rounds two through four.

TUF coaches and Nos. 1 and 2 flyweights Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo met in a bad blood-motivated match-up that ended with controversy. The Olympic gold medalist wrestler Cejudo was able to nail the perennial title contender in the opening frame, but a low blow earned a point deduction from Yves Lavigne. That proved to be the difference in at least some way, with Benavidez taking home a thin split decision.

Not much hype surrounded it, but the TUF 24 Finale quietly delivered one of the most action-packed cards in some time, delivering several potential ‘Fight of the Night’ contenders. Watch the event’s post-fight press conference beginning shortly after the main card right here:

Report: UFC To Cease Production of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ Soon

Jeremy Botter of FloCombat.com tweeted out this piece of news late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning:

While “The Ultimate Fighter” airing directly after WWE Monday Night Raw on Spike TV was the catalyst for the initial UFC boom period, the show’s popularity and relevance had fallen off after doing at least two seasons a year for over a decade. The current season, while praised by viewers for featuring the best fights on the show in recent memory, has done the worst viewership in the history of the franchise.

Allegations of “The Ultimate Fighter” growing stale have plagued the show for many years, though the format was tweaked a bit starting with season 17, which featured Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen as the coaches. At that point, the UFC hired a new production company to run the show, which took it in a more documentary-style format than the debauched, stereotypical reality show antics that it had become known for.

While the next season of The Ultimate Fighter will feature flyweights vying for a shot at the UFC championship, one contender in the division doesn’t plan on tuning in at all.

Ian McCall, who is rumored for a return to the Octagon at UFC 201 vs. Justin Scoggins, voiced his displeasure with TUF on Twitter recently.

Th 31-year-old McCall (13-5-1) had his two-fight win streak snapped in early 2015 at the hands of John Lineker. He lost to Demetrious Johnson, the current UFC champion, back in 2012 in the tournament semifinals after their first bout was declared a majority draw.

The UFC has officially announced the coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): Latin America, which will serve as the third season of the reality show.

You may be somewhat surprised to hear it, but hall of famers and former UFC light heavyweight champions Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and Forrest Griffin will coach opposite each other.

The show is set to be filmed in Argentina, with the debut currently being slated for August.

Liddell, one of the most iconic knockout artists in UFC history, hasn’t competed since 2010 when he suffered a disappointing knockout loss to Rich Franklin. “The Iceman” would go on to retire in the aftermath of the bout.

Owning wins over a who’s who of MMA, Liddell successfully defended his light heavyweight title four times, and holds records for most wins, as well as most knockouts in 205-pound history.

Griffin, on the other hand, is one of the most impactful fighters in sport history, mainly in part due to his legendary war with Stephan Bonnar at The Ultimate Fighter: 1 back in 2005.

After winning the inaugural season of the show, Griffin would also go on to win light heavyweight gold, although he never successfully defended the strap. Having not competed since a 2012 victory over Tito Ortiz, Griffin has hung up his gloves as well.
