UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is a strong believer in boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.
With Mayweather teasing a jump to MMA from the boxing world, there are many who believe that the opponent for Mayweather would be his former rival, soon-to-be-former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.
UFC President Dana White has even gone on record by stating that if this fight were to happen then the only way it makes sense is if Mayweather is willing to fight in the Octagon under the UFC banner. Time will tell if this fight is actually made.
During this week’s episode of UFC Tonight on FOX Sports 1 (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting), Woodley talked about possibly training Mayweather for an MMA fight.
In this episode, he suggested that it wouldn’t take a lot for an athlete like Mayweather to successfully transition into MMA.
The welterweight champion also believes that Mayweather “hold his own” against anyone in his weight class.
“Blocking kicks is really easy,” explained Woodley. “Once you get to the point where Floyd Mayweather is at, you can see that his boxing, his defense, his ability to see a punch coming in a fraction of a second and avoid or evade that punch, comes from repetition. Drilling over and over and over again. So that’s all we would have to do to utilize blocking kicks.
“If you look at mixed martial arts as a sport, there are guys that are in the UFC that don’t have a four out of five in their wrestling or jiu jitsu, so therefore, it’s not kinda crazy that someone with some of the best boxing we’ve ever seen may be able to hold his own.
“Obviously, every round starts on the feet, every fight starts on the feet, and if you can keep it on the feet, I think that he can hold his own with pretty much anyone in that weight division. My job is to really just help him avoid being taken down, using angles, using footwork, using defense, how to get back up if he gets taken down.”
“You think for one second I’m gonna be in Floyd Mayweather’s camp and I’m not gonna tighten up my boxing and get my hands ready to go?” said Woodley. “There’s gonna be a crossover in there. So I wouldn’t be second fiddle at all, it’s just a pivotal part of the sport where a boxing great decides to maybe come over to the octagon and see what he can do on that side and it’s an honor that they would consider me to do that.”
Keep in mind that the UFC has yet to officially announced that they have signed Mayweather or even suggested that they will have talks with the former boxing champion.

At this point, Boxing Legend Floyd Mayweather is either serious about becoming an MMA fighter or just trying to keep his name in the headlines.
There have been rumors of a rematch between Mayweather Jr. and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor are ongoing.
McGregor has made it clear in previous interviews that he wants the rematch to happen. The UFC lightweight champion hasn’t competed under the UFC banner since UFC 205 when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the title.
If you recall, leading into their first bout, Mayweather stated that this would serve as his retirement fight, which would leave him with a perfect 50-0 pro-boxing record. If this fight does happen then, it wouldn’t impact his boxing record but rather his MMA record.
Longtime UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has kicked up speculation that the UFC may not book Mayweather vs. McGregor 2 inside of the Octagon.
Instead, they could go in a completely different direction by booking Mayweather against former WWE champion and current welterweight fighter CM Punk.
Punk made his UFC debut in a welterweight bout against Mickey Gall back at UFC 203. As seen in the fight, Gall dominated Punk and submitted him in just minutes in the very first round. This fight also marked Punk’s pro-MMA debut.
TMZcaught up with Mayweather in Los Angeles this week and talked to him about a potential transition into MMA.
During this brief interview, Mayweather noted that is going to take UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley up on his offer and claimed their work together could begin in the near future.
“I’m going to start soon,” Mayweather said (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “We’ve been texting back and forth. We talked a couple times, but we’re going to start working out real soon.”
“I’ll probably need a little bit longer (than three months),” Mayweather said. “A little bit longer. Even if it takes six to eight months, whatever it takes, we just want to make sure everything is done correctly, and everything is done the right way.
“I can wrestle. My wrestling game is not that bad. On a scale from one to 10, I would say it’s probably a seven. We can take it up to a nine, if possible. Of course my hand game, on a scale of one to 10, it’s 100. The kicking game, on a scale from one to 10, it’s probably a four. We have to tweak a few things to take things to the next level.”
“Of course, they’re going to present the right numbers and we going to make it happen,” Mayweather said. “I can’t overlook or knock any MMA guy. Tyron is unbelievable – unbelievable fighter, tough competitor. Conor McGregor, he’s a tough competitor, a hell of a fighter. There’s a lot of tough, rugged guys out there in the MMA. I can’t overlook or disrespect those guys.”

Floyd “Money” Mayweather jumping into MMA would, naturally, be huge money for everyone involved.
Even with a transition still in a hypothetical stage, people across the sport are looking to get a slice of the action. One person jumping into the thick of it is UFC welterweight champion TyronWoodley, and if anyone thinks that he’s resistant to an outsider crossing over into his turf, well, think again. He wants to join The Money Team.
Speaking during his regular TMZ Sports segment, Hollywood Beatdown, Woodley discussed his previous interactions with Mayweather, and how he’s already working with boxing’s pay-per-view king.
“I saw him at the Jordan party during (NBA) All-Star weekend,” he said (h/t MMAFighting.com for the transcription). “We started chatting about training MMA and we decided let’s connect, let’s hook up in Vegas and do some training and get him ready for MMA.”
Rumors of Mayweather transitioning to MMA have been swirling since December, kicked off by UFC President Dana White, who teased the possibility of Mayweather competing in the Octagon. While Mayweather initially denied those rumors, a series of social media posts by Money reignited the discussion.
Outside of a short video showing Mayweather simply stepping into a cage, however, there has been no real information on any sort of MMA training. Woodley, however, was resoundingly positive on Mayweather, stating that he could have him ready to compete in “maybe two and a half months” and that he and The Money Team are “already getting it set up.” As for how well Mayweather could do on day one?
“Floyd Mayweather‘s one of the best strikers of all-time,” he said. “How many guys in the UFC that can’t wrestle and can’t grapple that consider themselves a standup fighter, but they have to stand across one of the greatest strikers ever, they gonna be in a world of smoke.”
Fans shouldn’t start booking flights to Las Vegas quite yet. Even if things are moving in a positive direction, a Mayweather MMA bout would still be a long way off.
Still, with this much smoke, it’s getting harder and harder to believe there isn’t a fire.
