UFC 136 was one of the best fight cards in UFC history, and it seems unreal that the UFC could even come close to topping it anytime soon.

At this time last year John Hathaway was the hottest welterweight prospect in the UFC holding an undefeated record that included wins over Rick Story and Diego Sanchez. Then Hathaway ran into tough and tested journeyman fighter Mike Pyle at UFC 120, and the hype train was quickly derailed after Pyle earned a unanimous decision victory.

Hathaway was able to rebound with a split decision victory over Kris McCray but he showed that he still has a long way to go before he is ready for the upper echelon of the UFC welterweight division.

Now Hathaway is set to take on always dangerous Matt Brown at UFC 138 and this will be his opportunity to prove that he is ready for that next step.

Brown is as tough as they come but he has never been knocked out he has been submitted eight times in his career.

Hathaway needs to bring the fight to Brown and utilize his wrestling and athleticism to get the fight to the ground where he can expose this glaring weakness.

It’s the ability to expose a fighter’s weakness that sets the good fighters apart from the great ones and Hathaway has to prove he can do that if he is ever going to be seen as a serious threat in the division.

Hathaway has all of the tools to be a star in the UFC now it’s time to put it all together and make a statement to the rest of the division.

UFC gold may never be in Hathaway’s future but he will show the world that he is ready for the challenge at UFC 138.

UFC 136: Jose Aldo Ready To Defend His Gold Against Veteran Florian

When he left World Extreme Cagefighting as its final featherweight champion, many expected Jose Aldo (19-1) to be the first man not named Urijah Faber to come from the promotion and gain mainstream success in the UFC.

His dynamic striking, engaging personality and seeming invincibility in the 145lbs. realm provided the fuel, all he had to do was put it together.

Booked to fight on New Year’s Day 2011, Aldo had to pull out of his first defense of the newly-created UFC featherweight title due to injury. He was re-booked to defend against Mark Hominick at UFC 129 in Toronto, where the biggest crowd in North American MMA history saw what he was all about.

A five round war against the home favourite Hominick ensued, a memorable scrap that had Rogers Centre bouncing and made both combatants $129,000 richer as a result of matching ‘Fight of the Night’ bonuses.

“It couldn’t have been a much better night. Fighting in the UFC for the first time and defending my title for the first time was great.”

Now, in his second defense—another that was rescheduled due to injury—Aldo will see veteran contender Kenny Florian across the cage. Florian, a longtime staple of the UFC, dropped to featherweight after two failed attempts to win gold at lightweight.

Aldo has great respect for the challenger, and doesn’t take offense to a notion many have that Florian is moving down solely to take his title away.

“It’s a natural transition for Kenny, a lot of guys move up and down in weight. I’m focused on my training, I respect Kenny, I don’t take it personally.”

For Florian, the fight is a chance at cementing his legacy as a champion, instead of the best bridesmaid the UFC has ever seen. Aldo has a legacy of his own to protect, seen by many as a top pound-for-pounder and a man who could reign atop the division for as long as he sees fit.

However, after a video of Aldo’s battle with cutting weight for the Hominick fight recently surfaced online,  the possibility that he may elect to compete at a higher weight class seems to be growing more realistic.

“Since I started training martial arts, going back to my jiu-jitsu days, I’ve always been cutting a lot of weight. I’m comfortable now at 25 years old cutting that weight, but there may come a time when I’m older that I have to look at going to lightweight. Right now though, I’m okay cutting the weight. Before [UFC 129] we were working on putting on muscle mass, that might have been why that weight cut was a little bit more.”

Regardless of where his future lies and what his plans are, the violent Brazilian has one task at hand at the moment, that of a very crafty, very talented veteran on October 8. Kenny Florian is no joke for anyone, and Aldo knows what he’s up against.

“I’ve fought taller guys, guys with longer reach. All I can do is expect to impose my gameplan and win the fight.”

The talking is done. All that’s left is to lock the cage door and see which man is better. The champion believes it’s him, and he’ll look to prove it at UFC 136.

Just 11 days after shutting down Wanderlei Silva prospect Jorge Lopez at UFC Fight Night 23, welterweight Justin Edwards accepted on Wednesday a fight against John Maguire at UFC 138 on Nov. 5 in Birmingham, England.

UFC 138, headlined by the promotion’s first five-round, non-title fight, Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz, will air on same-day, tape-delay on Spike TV.

UFC 138 Fight Card Interview: Jason "Shotgun" Young Ready for Omigawa

British featherweight, Jason “Shotgun” Young, has gone from London to London in his quest to become the best fighter he can be in his blooming career. Young is in London, Ontario at the Adrenaline Training Center preparing his game for his battle with Japanese fighter Michihiro Omigawa that takes place on November 5 at UFC 138 back on his native soil.

I caught up with Young after he finished his morning training with Adrenaline head trainer Alex Gasson and he was gracious enough to chat with Bleacher Report about a few topics including his debut fight at UFC 131 in Vancouver, B.C., his path to the UFC and his upcoming fight at UFC 138 in England.

Young has travelled from London, England to train with fellow Adrenaline fighters Sam Stout, Mark Hominick and Chris Horodecki and says that the way they fight, the knowledge and style they bring is what attracted him to train at Adrenaline.

Young is a new father and is clearly focused on giving his career the best chance he possibly can as he left his family back home to “step his game up to the next level.”

With the close decision loss in his debut against Justin Poirier, Young is well aware of what he needs to do in his next match to come out on the better side, and he is dedicated to rounding out his game to be able to win in the UFC.

Shotgun certainly has the pop and power to compete with the best on his feet and I’m sure in the next few weeks he will improve all aspects of his game.

He also has the intangibles that the UFC is always on the lookout for and that is the courage, heart and confidence displayed in his words.

“I’ll fight anyone. Anyone they put in front of me.”

I look forward to watching Young vs Omigawa.

Full video interview is available here, as well as some footage of Shotgun training.
