Come November 19, MMA fans in Northern California will be treated to a fantastic welterweight scrap when Martin Kampmann and Rick Story collide in San Jose at UFC 139.

The bout, which has already been verbally agreed upon by both men, will go a long way in determining another decisive top 170-pound contender.

Considering the recent hurdles that both men have faced as of late, this is a fight that should produce some serious fireworks.

After rattling off six consecutive wins in the division, Rick Story appeared primed for a title shot; then he ran into unheralded prospect Charlie Brenneman, who soundly outworked “Horror” over the course of three rounds.

The loss put serious question marks into the minds of many as to where Story truly belongs in the division.

On the other hand, Martin Kampmann has dropped two consecutive bouts to Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez respectively, but both were hotly contested bouts that ended in controversial decision losses for the Dane. One could easily argue that Kampmann hasn’t legitimately lost a bout since his collision with Paul Daley in 2009.

The victor here makes a major statement and puts himself right back in the title hunt.

A welterweight scrap between Martin Kampmann and Rick Story has been added to UFC 139, which is scheduled for November 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

The UFC announced the bout Wednesday.

0-2 in his last two outings after being on the wrong end of two razor-close decisions to Jake Shields at UFC 121 and Diego Sanchez at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann, “Hitman” will be looking to get back into title contention and into the win column by decisively beating Story. He feels that he won both of his last two fights, which will likely motivate him not to leave things to the judges the next time.

“The Horror,” who is also coming off of a loss — his first since 2009, won’t be giving up a win easily. He was upset by late replacement Charlie Brenneman who stepped in for Story’s original opponent at UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry, Nate Marquardt, who was denied a license for the June event in Pittsburgh due to elevated levels of testosterone. Prior to that Story, who replaced injured Anthony Johnson on the card against Marquardt, defeated former number one UFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves by unanimous decision at UFC 130 one month earlier.

The card will be headlined by a heavyweight title bout between champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos and will likely feature the return of Josh Koscheck who has been sidelined while rehabbing a broken orbital bone he suffered in his UFC 124 welterweight championship bout with Georges St-Pierre in December. Also on the card will be a bantamweight bout between Brian Bowles and Urijah Faber, a middleweight bout between Chris Weidman and Tom Lawlor and a lightweight bout between Gleison Tibau and Rafael dos Anjos.

Martin KampmannMartin Kampmann and Rick Story will both look to return to the win column in a UFC 139 bout when the duo face each other.

The UFC confirmed the matchup on Wednesday morning.

Though not officially announced, UFC 139 is expected to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Kampmann has lost two straight fights, though both were razor close and and led to controversy. In the first at UFC 121, he fought Jake Shields, out-striking him during the bout that ultimately went Shields’ way, mostly it seemed on the strength of four successful takedowns.

He returned last March against Diego Sanchez. Again, Kampmann out-struck his opponent (77-51, according to FightMetric), yet he lost another decision. The back-to-back losses dropped him to 17-5.

Story, meanwhile, is coming off a more decisive loss, one which snapped a six-fight win streak. In June, he faced Charlie Brenneman on short notice and dropped a unanimous decision. With the defeat, he fell to 13-4.

UFC 139’s main event has yet to be confirmed by the UFC, but as MMA Fighting reported earlier this month, heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is on track to return from a shoulder injury and defend his title against Junior dos Santos.

The event takes place on November 19.
